Games that made you eat crow

Jesus Christ, you should go into marketing. I've never even heard of this and I'm adding it to my list of games to get.

Let me help to bump it up a few spots in your list.

I know you're responding to the "man" part (which yeah is dumb) but I also don't understand the Zelda comparison either. Ys is really nothing like Zelda imo. Zelda has always been primarily a puzzle game even all the way back to the original game. Ys (well Oath anyway, I can't speak for the rest of the series) has literally 0 puzzles. It only loosely has what we even consider traditional dungeons, the dungeons are just an excuse to give you a breather between boss battles (since none of the normal enemies pose any sort of real threat).

I see people compare the two a lot and it has only confused me every time I read the comparison.

Ys I + II (And perhaps IV for the PC Engine.) are definitly comparable to Zelda with their adventure and puzzle elements.

Sleeping Dogs.

A sequel to true crime that got canned and picked up by square enix? Sounds horrible really.

Ended up being maybe my 3rd favorite crime sandbox game of the generation.

In my defense even after playing and loving it the original on paper description still sounds like a disaster even knowing how it turned out.

Hitmat:Absolution

it was free on PS+ and i thought "what the hell, why not" went expecting a shit tier game and when i was done i began clapping in admiration of the what a great game it was

(on that same week i got max payne 3 and this one turned out crap instead)

Haha no Max Payne 3 is amazing my friend. Also Hitman Absolution os the worst Hitman game in the series..play Blood Money instead ;)

Paper Mario heh.

When it was first shown I didn't like the paper aesthetic, small numbers, and wanted smrpg 2.

It turned out to be better than smrpg and the graphical style is one of my favorites.

Life is Strange, while I loved everything about it as it was revealed, I wrote it off thinking it would have terrible writing (Remember Me) and a lot of the lines in the trailer didn't help. I lamented this to a friend and he gifted me the first episode just to try.

I finally got around to playing it a couple weeks ago and it's just love. Sure, there's some dialogue that almost goes too far, but man am I so happy to be wrong.

I know it's been a while, but no one said Metroid Prime yet? These boards were frothing with anger over the thought of Metroid becoming an FPS. Nintendo calling it a "first person adventure" didn't sway the hate. Using the space station intro as the demo for trade shows didn't help. It wasn't until the game was almost out before people finally started to accept that the game not only felt like Metroid, but was also amaze-balls.

Came for this. Before release this was seen as the Metroid license plastered over a western-developed fps. My reaction was ... NOPE.. nope no. All this, at that time, sounded bat-shit crazy.

Well, Retro released one of the best games of all time and made the whole industry eat crow. I'm still eating crow 13 years later. Its my 2nd favorite game ever.

Hyrule Warriors hit me by surprise.... I am not really into Nintendo games or Musou games at all, but this ate my life.... now I have Dragon Quest Warriors CE on pre-order...

Super Mario 3D World was a big one. I typically don't like Mario games all that much, and 3D World didn't look like it would change that, but I loved 3D World to death. It quickly became my favorite 3D platformer of all time. The laser-sharp focus in level design probably helped out a lot.

Ys I + II (And perhaps IV for the PC Engine.) are definitly comparable to Zelda with their adventure and puzzle elements.

That makes a bit more sense then (I own 1 and 2 on Steam but haven't gotten around to playing them yet). Doesn't change this context though really, Oath is absolutely nothing like Zelda at all which is what was compared here.

Shadows of Mordor.

Expected something completely bland and derivative when it was announced. Turned out to be one of my favourite games from last year

I was expecting it to be bland and derivative, but it ended up being worse than I had even imagined.

Maybe MGS. I used to only have an xbox so I was big into Splinter Cell. I laughed at all the comparisons between it and MGS2 because I tried the demo for a minute and hated it, xbox had better graphics etc. and thought Sam Fisher was the true stealth OG. Finally played MGS earlier this year and I loved it. Hopefully I like 2 as much when I get around to it

Dead Space 2 multiplayer --

The reminds me of Mass Effect 3 multiplayer. As a huge fan of the Mass Effect series I was dreading a tacked on MP mode. Thought it was a waste of resources, that would go on ignored by the masses. I was definitely wrong. What an awesome implementation of a "horde-mode" mp game mode. In my opinion, it's superior to Firefight and Gears 2/3 horde mode.

Super Mario 3D World.

I love 2d Mario (sidescrolling) but 3D Mario is hit-or-miss for me. After playing NSMB U (which was mechanically sound, but very passionless and phoned in) I really wanted a good sidescroling Mario game again. And then they announced 3D World, which had these wonderful production values, playable Peach (finally), tons of new music, tons of levels, etc etc and I felt very frustrated that Nintendo was sinking that sort of money into a 3D Mario and not a 2d Mario.

Well, it's a fantastic game and I played nearly every inch of it. It doesn't quite sate my appetite for 2D Mario of course, but it was far better than I could've expected.

Ace Combat 4

Shattered Skies stage

Not having played any of the first 3, I went in starting the game thinking it was going to be a after burner type experience, by the time I got done with that stage I was a fanboy for life.

I coudln't think of anything but then I remembered Splatoon. Videos did not excite me and positive impressions did nothing. I thought it was going to be a somewhat entertaining game that doesn't receive much fanfare, and that Nintendo would toss it into whatever tier they think F-Zero and Star Fox are in.

The crow was delicious.

Didnt think Arkham Asylum was going to be nearly as good as it was. Bought it on a steam sale for $10, figured it would be alright. Ended up being one of my favorite games.

Thought MGSV having the best gameplay in any game ever was hyperbole. It was/is not.

EDIT: Oh and Max Payne 3 considering how much people were crapping on it...it probably has the weakest (but still interesting) story but the gameplay stomps all over the other games

I ate some serious crow with Mario Galaxy 2. I didn't enjoy the first Mario Galaxy. At the time, the motion controls and the crappy Wii visuals turned me off of the game, and I also didn't like how frequently the game was broken up by cinematics and story.

Consequently I never bothered with Galaxy 2, but finally took the plunge when they had it on sale for $10 on Wii U's eshop. After finishing it last winter I can say without a doubt that it's the best game I've ever played. The total focus on gameplay, the constantly evolving level design, the joyful graphics & music. It was a wonderful reminder about what I loved about videogames, which was easy to lose sight of when most AAA games these days are grimdark open-world side-quest collections with a massive focus on scripted cut-scenes instead of gameplay.

You are right of course. Its similarities to Zelda are very superficial.

I was expecting it to be bland and derivative, but it ended up being worse than I had even imagined.
lol

Once I meet a woman that plays Ys I'll let you know :)
...Excuse me?

Can only think of Forza.
I was like lol, GT wannabe trash lol.

But game was legit and I grew to like the series more than GT.

I couldn't really think of one. I'd probably say Persona 4. I didn't really care too much about it until a friend let me borrow his Vita. It ended up being one of the best JRPGs I ever played.

Took Gaf's advice and loved it too. Didn't realize how much I would have.

There are a ton of games in here people liked and I don't though, lol. A lot of swings and a miss for me, but one diamond in the rough here and there is worth trying them.

Until Dawn. It looked so stupid and boring to me, like the millionth "OMG CHOICES MATTER" that will ultimately have nothing going for it. I never really saw videos of it because I didn't wanna waste my time and every time I saw a preview of it on a magazine I just laughed and turned the page. Once it came out, I watched streams and man was it so fun to watch. The next day I red boxed it and I loved it. It had its faults but what a ride it was. I would love to buy it again once it's cheaper just to play it with friends and try to keep everyone alive.

Got the PSP remake of Persona when it came out, played it for a few days, and thought it was absolute shit. I think that I went about 4-5 years thinking that without giving it a second chance, but then someone made that music replacement patch and I felt compelled to give it another go. It's still got issues, but it's one of my favorite games now (storywise if not so much in terms of combat).

Final Fantasy as a whole.

I thought it is some weeaboo bullshit but one day I must have been hit on the head but I remember going into the town then I lost conciousness for about 5 minutes and when I came to I had a copy of Final Fantasy XIII-2 in my hand and I was like "What the hell! Where did this come from!" so I reluctantly put it into my PS3 and OH MY GOD !!!!!!!!!!!!

"Hey Boss, yeah sorry about tomorrow but I think I have black death or something so I can't come over, not the day after neither so maybe on Monday, k bye!"

Since then I have been in love with Final Fantasy and FF XIII-2 is my absolute 2nd favourite RPG of all times (2nd only to NieR).

Wonderful 101. It wasn't doing much for me in previews and the demo was pretty awful. Still bought the game due to Kamiya/Platinum and was still iffy on it for a few hours, but a few more stages in and it started clicking and I started having fun and it started getting gradually amazing and by the end of the game it may have cracked my top ten of all time.

So many crows...

Hmm, not sure. Hotline Miami and Binding of Isaac, probably. Was kind of a prude when it came to indie games at the time because I didn't really like Braid but those two games are great.

Oh this is absolutel true...game is AMAZING...reall surprised Sony hasnt jumped on porting the other games on the same engine

It's not a Sony IP, and Falcom is using a new engine since Ys 7 anyway. Really wish they would go back to the AoN/OiF/Origin style though, it was much more fun with the platforming elements and Adol being a one-man army.

Gone Home.

I strongly disliked it when it came out. The story was a massive disappointment to me, one I thought was held in high regard because of the subject matter, while the actual storytelling was actually super sub-par and predictable.

I replayed it recently. Really got into the atmosphere the second time around (knowing the story's twists and turns helped) and I was finally able to appreciate it for what it is. I wouldn't call it a masterpiece or anything like that, but an interesting experience for sure.

Code Name S.T.E.A.M.
Nintendo's roundtable announcement was really disappointing, especially since we didn't get to actually see the game. The media was like "eh" and nobody cared much.

Screenshots surfaced and the game looked awful. It was a constant bore in each Nintendo Direct. I wrote the game off, with having a slight hope with Intelligent Systems behind the wheel.

And then I tried out the demo...
Bought the game on launch day and LOVED it.
Probably my GOTY for 2015 as for now.

Hearthstone. "It's a free to play card game by Blizzard that's nothing more than a weak attempt to get more people to play WoW. In a few weeks it'll just be another app that people have forgotten about."

I can't stop playing this damned game...

it's a joke dude, you should obviously know what the saying "for men" means...
Yeah, it's a dumb saying that reinforces stupid ideas about gender and contribute to an exclusive "boys club" mentality. But before you say I'm overreacting, I initially just replied with something that was the equivalent of *cough* hey now. I just couldn't believe that you'd actually double down on the sexist joking though, pretty lame.

I used to carry on about how I don't have time for the Souls series because mindless trial and error and artificial difficulty is ridiculous.

I recently platinumed both DS2 SotS and Bloodborne; currently working through DSFix DS1. I'm helplessly addicted and still get physically sick dreading yet another incredible, but difficult boss.

Bioshock 1 was hype to doubt to crow/respect.

I was so hyped for Bioshock when I saw ads and stuff but didn't own a machine to play it with at launch.

In 2009, I finally jumped on that gen and bought it on. PS3.

Uncharacteristically, I stopped playing after only about an hour. I liked a lot about it but felt like the mechanics were way too dated and clunky.

I hadn't ruled the game out and kept "meaning to go back to it" but had developed serious doubt about it's status as a classic.

Then before Infinite was set to launch I started feeling the hype and wanted to go back and play the first and second game.

Suffice it to say by the time it was over I had to admit I was wrong and had tons of respect for it.

For the record, I also enjoyed 2 and adore Infinite (a game which I think has too many people dumping on it after the fact.)
