Games that play like Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance (I and II)

Having played both of the Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance and Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance II on the original Xbox 2 years back or so, my girlfriend is interested in finding games that play very similarly to these.

I don't hear a lot about these games these days, but they're also not exactly new. That said, I thought I'd look and see what I could find. What can you recommend that she might enjoy?

Diablo 3 if you want something current on console. Almost any decent action RPG post Diablo should work though.

Champions of Norath played pretty similarly on ps2.
There was also some Dungeon and Dragons game on Xbox & Fallout: Brotherhood of steel. Though they're not as good as dark alliance.

Justice League Heroes (also made by Snowblind studios)
X-Men Legends (1 & 2)
Marvel Ultimate Alliance (1 & 2)

However these games are of varying quality.

If looking for Diablo-esque games in general, there's also the following on PC:
Torchlight (1 & 2)
Titan Quest
Path of Exile (F2P)

From a console standpoint, your options aren't as deep as the PC, however there are some decent modern options...

The new Gauntlet, Diablo 3, Sacred 3, Dungeon Siege 3 (which I think is BC on XB1), D&D Sword Coast Legends

If it's the Co-op you care about, Divinity: Original Sin is a change of pace, but solid none the less.

If you want to go oldschool though Hunter: The Reckoning should be in your wheel house as well.

Sword Coast Legends isn't anything like it, it's a RTw/P game.

I was really disappointed with PS4 Gauntlet. It has to be Diablo. My wife is the same (she's a huge fan of the Dark Alliance games) and only Diablo 3 comes comes. We have put in over 100 hours I reckon.

Sacred 2 on ps3/360 came close to scratching that DA itch for me. Almost.

I would still prefer a true Snowblind game in that vein like DA and Champions. Please Kickstart Snowblind!

From the same developer:
- Justice League Heroes: cool game but laughable story and inferior to MUA (see below).
- Lord of the Rings War in the North: very underrated, I love this game. Only three characters and the camera is behind the back and not overhead but other than that it's mechanically identical to the Dark Alliance games.

From Activision:
- X-Men Legends 1 &2: best X-Men games.
- Marvel Ultimate Alliance 1 & 2: recently re-released. The first one is a classic for any Marvel fan with dozens of characters and a ton of fan-service. The sequel isn't as good but still fun, it's based on the same story that inspired the Civil War movie.

You can also try Diablo 3 and Torchlight, they are distant cousins to these games.

Your closest matches on console are:

Champions of Norrath (PS2) and it's lesser sequel, Return to Arms
Dungeons and Dragons Heroes (Original Xbox, BC on 360)
Diablo 3
Dungeon Siege 3

Dungeon Hunter: Alliance is pretty good. Sometimes I think I'm the only one who played it in earnest, ugh Gameloft knockoff and all. But ... pretty good.
Diablo 3 is amazeballs OTOH.

Sadly on this gen all you get is Diablo really that's good. I would love a spiritual successor to Dark Alliance / Champs of Norrath so badly.

Thank you for making this thread! Very fond memories of played by couch coop with friend and family with BGDA1. :))

This. Fantastic in co-op. I loved every minute of it. Was very unfairly treated upon release. Superb hack n slash fun with great co-op mechanics.

Spiritual sequel:

Dungeon Siege 3
Dungeon Hunter
Marvel Ultimate Alliance
Marvel Heroes (free mmo with controller support)
Diablo 3
Gauntlet (2014)
Gauntlet Legends

I really enjoyed the Dark Alliance games, and LoTR: War in the North played as close to those classics as any game out right now. I agree that the game is underrated, and was pretty harshly reviewed. It was good fun in co-op and sp.

Yes, Diablo3 is the best arpg of the current gen, but I l think War in the North plays much closer to the Dark Alliance experience.

If you have a PS4, try the PSN game Fat Princess Adventures. It is actually a pretty fun little action RPG. It has 4 player couch co-op too.

I'm seeing a lot of recommendations here, this is great! Regarding Diablo, I'm not sure that'd be her cup of tea (but my own impression of the game might be wrong, I've never played, so I will look into it).

BUT Lord of the Rings: War in the North being by the same developer and being a LOTR game (a series of which she is fond), that might be just the game to look at first!

Keep them coming!

Marvel Heroes

It will be coming to console this year, I think. It has over 50 heroes so far and at least 10 more released each year. There is something for everyone in that game.
