Games that were made for you

I'll add Watch_Dogs to my list.

Person of Interest is currently one of my favourite shows. It's use of technology, paranoia, surveillance, vigilantism and conspiracies are so cool and well-written. It has great characters and acting. So Watch_Dogs seems to be in a similar vein exploring ideas of surveillance and misuse of technology and vigilantism make my really intrigued with it. Feels like they made it for me.

I was about to throw the towel in on gaming, but then From made Demon's Souls. I'll also say this, when I first played Demon's Souls I was both very depressed and plunging through A Song of Ice and Fire. The combination really heightened the experience.

Probably DayZ for me.
I don't particularly care about zombies, but the persistent open world co-op / pvp / survival idea really appeals to me both in concept and execution.

I always wished CC2 would make another set of .Hack games for this generation of consoles. I don't know why I loved GU series, but something about it made me play those games like a madman.

Well, they made that neat fighting game for the PS3.
It plays like Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm, and has quite an amount of fanservice for a DVD bonus.

Uncharted

I've always been a sucker for pulp adventure. Fantasized about going on adventures and all that since I was a kid. To finally have that realized in such a great way in a game was mindblowing to me.

Yup.

This and Little Big Planet (playing, not creating :( )

I've had a good run w/ my PS3 :0

Gears of War

God of War

Manhunt

Resident Evil 1-4

The Walking Dead

Mario 3

Mike Tyson's Punch Out

Shadow of the Colossus

Grand Theft Auto

Super Castlevania IV

Final Fantasy Tactics: When I first played it... wow. Just wow, it clicked SO MUCH with me in every possible way. It was my introduction to SRPGs, I just couldn't believe most RPGs weren't SRPGs since the gameplay is so much better. The strategy, characters, music, looks. I got it along with FFVII - I have never finished FFVII.

Street Fighter Alpha 2: SFII is the game that got me into games, when I played Alpha 2 it had a similar effect to FFT - everything clicked with me perfectly. I LOVE how the gameplay feels in comparison to earlier SF games, and while I had already played Alpha 1, it really has nothing on Alpha 2. So many fun to use characters, perfect music, I think it's still my favorite 2D fighter.

Super Paper Mario: Think of any aspect of this game. Yes, I love it, no question. It's really high on my "favorite game ever candidate" list. Gameplay is there, charm is there, looks are there. Maybe it doesn't have the strongest soundtrack, but it's still pretty fantastic. I love the first two games, but SPM was just way more awesome to me. Plus it's probably the prettiest game I've ever played, no joke.

Dark Souls - Its the closest I have come to playing the video game version of Dungeons and Dragons.

Ratchet and Clank - I like platformers, humor, gadgets, and in game challenges.

Persona 4 - Because that game is awesome.

Dishonored is the game I long held in my head as the game I would make if somebody handed me a Lead Designer job with full creative freedom. The main points of my imaginary, ideal game match up to what Dishonored actually is to a freaky degree. Play as a character framed for murdering royalty: check. Set in a world of converging science and magic: check. Enlist the aide of unsavory crooks and thugs in the pursuit to clear your name: check. Dues Ex-style gameplay that combines action, exploration and character interaction: check.

It's like Arkane Studios hired DiCaprio's character from Inception to break into my dreams, steal my ideas and make my ideal game for me. And that's awesome.

The only real difference is in the end game. In my version, you were always strapped for cash, but you could take dirty jobs from the criminal underworld for cash. Taking these would reduce your public reputation (unless you completed them undetected) and would effect if you could ultimately clear your name, or if your reputation was so soured that no one believes you, so all you're left with is revenge.

Harmo Knight.

After experiencing Pokémon Black/White 1and 2's music and declaring them the best game soundtracks ever, and also wishing Game Freak would make a non-Pokémon game, they turned around and announced Rhythm Hunter Harmo Knight, a non-Pokémon music rhythm game.

Rhythm is on my top 3 list of game genres, too. I was very much flipping out when I saw this game's announcement.

In true Game Freak fashion, it's not out in America yet, even after 6 months...

Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne

I started playing the game and fell in love immediately. In most games you fight to save the world, in this game the world is destroyed in the first 10 minutes. The whole limbo type afterlife world you roam and the monsters being based on different figures in religion was very attractive to me. The difficulty and the music, I enjoyed it all. I even loved the use of the motion blur which I normally hated in other ps2 games. When I played Nocturne I felt like someone read my mind or something.

Project Reality: It's a Battlefield 2 mod that takes away most of the arcadiness that BF2 had and made it into a realistic shooter. It also features a modification of Mumble that creates a chain of communication between squads, commanders, and squatmates; it even has proximity chat that allows seamless chatter between allies.

While PR has been overtaken in realism by ARMA's ACE mod, it's the game's community that makes it a better experience than ARMA's more realistic mod. Most, if not all players role play as if they were actual soldiers on the battlefield. Some players will elect to take the role as tank gunners while their teammates play as a tank commander, a job that only calls out targets and drives the tanks.

I love the game. There is so much to learn and the community is pretty open to newbies. If you're looking to play something a bit more realistic, PR is the way to go.

I second this :)

Also, the Ratchet & Clank games. And the first Jak & Daxter.

Mega Man 9 and Mega Man 10. The first six Mega Man games seemed to just keep coming, one after another, with new powers, new items, new enemies and bosses, slammed up against perfectly precise controls and mechanics. And I loved it! But then Mega Man 7 was such a massive step down, and Mega Man 8 managed to plunge even further... So when I found out that the classic series was returning to perfection years later, it was the most amazing thing. Five console generations later, and my favourite game was still using four colors per sprite. I don't need 8GB of ram - just give me a new Mega Man game every year until I die, and gaming will be as great as ever.

Rez - a rail-shooter with abstract, Tron-like visuals and an electronic music soundtrack, made by SEGA one of my favorite game companies ever? As soon as I heard about it I had to have it.

Wipeout - I've always been a fan of sleek, futuristic art, and the series launched right after I started getting into electronic music.

Phantasy Star - as a kid, I was always fascinated by space/exploration (still am!). Final Fantasy 1, which I got due to the Nintendo Power hype (after enjoying but not completely enamored by Dragon Quest 1) was a game I was in love with. Seeing an RPG moved away from traditional medieval fantasy into a sci-fi setting where you could get your own spaceship and travel between planets was beyond awesome...

DJ Hero 2 - I'm not huge into rhythm games, but I DJ as a hobby. The first DJ Hero looked neat but the game didn't really cater as much to my music tastes as I was expecting. The second game was much more on-point in that aspect. Even if I find it much harder than traditional/laptop DJing :P

Mega Man 9/10 - I always dreamed of seeing a new Mega Man done in the style of 8-bit games, but never thought Capcom would go ahead and do it... I still prefer some of the NES entries (2, 3 and to a lesser extent, 5) over these 2 but they are still great!

Ni No Kuni - My first Ghibli experience was seeing Princess Mononoke at a local indie cinema (Cinema Arts Centre in Huntington, NY). I remember hearing about it on the internet, how it was one of the best selling films of all time in Japan, and was thinking "holy shit they are actually showing an anime locally!", so I got my dad to take me and my brother to see it. Ever since that moment, seeing those lush landscapes and awesome animation, I wanted a Ghibli-esque RPG. Not to mention, Ni No Kuni features a lot of stuff sorely missing in PS2-and-later RPGs, such as a world map, vehicles, and a casino.

I had the idea of a GTA western that I creatively called "Grand Theft Carriage", but I never thought that Rockstar would actually make that that until they did. It was bizarre to see it come to life, but I loved it, it was the kind of open world game I wanted to see over 10 years ago (around the time Vice City came out).

Brütal Legend feels like it was made with me in mind. I love that game and everything about it.

We've all experienced it. That feeling when you hear about a game and you decide, there and then, you must have it. Because you feel like it was made specifically for you, it caters to your genre tastes and desires and there's something about it that calls to you.

For example:

When I was 11, I heard about Max Payne. All I knew about it was that I was an undercover cop framed for murder and out for revenge. It sounds simple. But at age 11, that sounded like the greatest thing I'd ever heard (and it was my first M rated game). I played it, loved it, and never looked back.

After GTA IV, while a great game, I wasn't hugely interested in what happened next with the franchise. But then word came out... Grand. Theft. Auto. Heist. Game. That simple concept alone guaranteed my interest. Grand Theft Auto V is now super-high on my want list.

For Tomb Raider, since I never played the old games (well, I played TR2 when I was a kid, but I got stuck somewhere and gave up) I wasn't a fan at all. Then what I heard about the reboot was awesome... mysterious island, hints of the supernatural, fucked up cults, a bow, Batman Begins/Casino Royale-esque reboot (making it grounded)... I was like... hell yes, this was made for me. As Net_Wrecker said, Arrow + Nikita... times Lost.

The idea of this thread is when you're sold on concepts because they sound like they were tailor made for you. The ultimate quality of the game however can obviously not live up to your expectations.

For example, LA Noire. The concept sold me immediately. 1940s homicide detective in Los Angeles? Untangling a vast conspiracy? Open world? Published by Rockstar? I thought I was in heaven.

Suffice it to say, it did not live up to the dream.

Before just listing games, try to give reasons why you felt like it was made for you.

Skyrim, but not upon hearing about it, but upon playing it:
No overbearing and overcomplicated stat management, you level up, you get stronger, you get more skills

Choose to explore the beautiful world (and be rewarded with side events, quests, dungeons and discoveries) or choose fast travel for times when Im not feeling manually walking my character somewhere.

Encouraged dungeon exploration with an exit at the end (instead of trekking back where you came).

The game fits all moods and styles, really. On days I want to just get through the story, it allows me to do so without making me feel like Im missing out. If I want to travel on foot I'll find cool stuff.

All of the GTA games. The open world, the action movie feel, car chases, gunfights in the streets, the comical side, the great stories, love them all.

Cyberpunk 2077 is looking to be that game right now.
Ditto.

Shenmue. Its the game of my life.
a truly masterful piece of art.
Shenmue 1 and 2 needs an HD edition asap. I'd pay anything to play it again.

YES. I never got to play Shenmue 2 but I loved Shenmue from the moment I heard about the concept to the moment the end credits roled. I revisited it not to long ago and you can see how HUGELY influential and ahead of its time that game was. And no, I'm not talking about QTEs.

The Godzilla game that was on Dreamcast. I remember reading about it online at getting really excited, telling my mom I HAD TO get a Dreamcast because I love Godzilla and I love Sega and OMG I NEED IT. Ironically, I never bought the game. The idea of it was probably better anyway :P

Project Ego (later known as Fable) was supposed to be that game for me. An incredibly complex realtime open world with dynamic systems for EVERYTHING. Yea, I'm still waiting for that game...

Probably Super Mario Galaxy. Stripped away open worlds and exploration (which I didn't like as much about previous 3D Marios) and made the fundamental gameplay more about prescribed obstacle courses with core platforming as the main style of play. Added in widescreen, tighter controls than ever, and finally, ORCHESTRAL FUCKING MUSIC in place of the still-charming but aging MIDI/simpler soundtracks.

It was glorious.

Most recently:

Forza Horizon. Open world racing with solid physics, impeccable performance, winding mountain roads, highways, hill climbs, city streets, off road paths, upgrades, hidden classic barn finds and a day/night cycle, all in the middle of a music and car festival with crowds and fireworks you can notice from miles away? I've been dreaming about this game since playing the shit out of it and being disappointed by Test Drive Unlimited 1/2. As opposed to TDU, the driving itself feels so damn good.
Indeed.

I'm going to throw Trials Evo and skate in there too. All three games have utterly sublime controls, and are just fun to fuck around in.

Also Peggle, but everyone loves that right?

GOD HAND.

For a guy like me, who grew up playing the likes of Double Dragon, Final Fight, Streets of Rage and River City Ransom? Shinji Mikami's love letter to the genre might as well have been personally addressed to me, as well.

Fire Emblem: Rekka no Ken. A tactical RPG with convincing medieval/fantasy trappings and a host of interesting characters who are fleshed out through in-battle conversations between your units. Political drama with a good deal of fantasy stuff mixed in... I was in love from the very first preview.

Once I found out that XCOM: Enemy Unknown was essentially Fire Emblem but with aliens I was similarly captivated.

Dark Souls is one too, the first time I read about it was in EDGE and it looked fuckin beautiful, it looked like what I imagined Zelda should be doing. It turned out to be one of my favourite games of this gen, still haven't beaten it but I'll get around to it some day...

Zombies ate my Neighbors
Blaster Master
Fire Pro Wrestling
Legend of Zelda:OoT
Theres more but class is about to start

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker.

The ultimate game for me in terms of aesthetics, the narrative, the soundtrack, the characters, the environment, the gameplay mechanics...every damn thing is exactly what I want from a video game.

Hell, I even love the massive fetch quest.

Wind Waker is my personal Game-Of-All-Time. There isn't a single game that surpasses it.

From the moment I saw it demonstrated to the moment I finished it...everything was designed just for me. It was like the perfect storm.
Are you me?

Megaman Battle Network as a series after I discovered it (started with 3, still my fav, went to 2, then 1, then played the rest in order. I really liked the 5th one, with the liberation missions and being able to call in Netnavis and customize them in some part as well - feels like they added many oh what I was clamouring for and that it was made to my wants. The 4th was bad but the fact you could battle Roll finally and purple enemy navis would actually fight instead of sending out viruses were some things I'd wanted)

Also,
Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn
Stronghold (Original and Crusader)
Super Smash Bros. (Nintendo music and characters, customization)

They're that were made for me and I've been hyped for the sequels to those games. Unfortunately not all lived up to their series.
