Games that you actually didn't see coming

For this generation, I think the game that surprised me the most was Tatsunoko vs. Capcom. I was starting to think Capcom was done with the VS series and then out of nowhere I read about that. Even more surprising was the fact that it was released outside of Japan.

I would have to say Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe. I remember almost having a meltdown when I initially read about it. (T-rated MK game with DC comic book characters- that's crazy, I thought).

While there are been a bunch over the years... (for me).. the one that still sicks with me is

Punchout!! (Wii)

Never in a million years did i think we would get another game in the series, and let alone one that was so good.

I was truly mindblown upon hearing about it.

X-Men vs Street Fighter: Such a bizarre concept back then. Still weird to think about it, but we're so used to the series now...

Mega Man 9: Never thought I'd see the day.

Xenoblade in the US, DKCR, and Luigi's Mansion 2. Those were all genuinely surprising to me. Now I'm sort of used to Nintendo reviving or reusing franchises, especially old ones like Kid Icarus.

Xenoblade was probably the most shocking one to me. I remember getting on facebook the morning after it was announced, and seeing posts from NOA about homs and mechons and being so confused. I thought they were just being utter douchebags or something, so I went to GAF and saw that- nope- the game was getting a US release.

I'd never thought that they would bring up a "sequel" to Red Dead Revolver and at the same time turn the IP from mediocre to one of the best IPs ever.

Wait a sec, wasn't it you who claimed you didn't even get that far into the game?

Yeah, the only Zelda game I own that I started & didn't finish(& considering I persevered through the stodge that is TP's opening that says a lot about WW).

Finally someone else on Gaf that has a sensible view on WW.

I'd never thought that they would bring up a "sequel" to Red Dead Revolver and at the same time turn the IP from mediocre to one of the best IPs ever.

Yeah, R* buying an IP from Capcom was unforseeable, & then to top it all off they made an amazing game.

I didn't see the E3 reveal of Final Fantasy 14 coming, more so when the "Online" text appeared. I was letdown then. I mean, I knew the next FF numbered installment would be coming, but it caught me off guard when Sony had announced it at their E3 press conference.

you know, Square-Enix has actually been great with surprise FF announcements this gen (the whole Fabula Nova Crystallis ordeal with FFXIII, Versus, and Agito all announced at the same time, FFXIV surprise announcement, Dissidia FF, FFXIII-2, etc.)...

...unfortunately they haven't been able to deliver on, well, basically any of them. :/

Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games came out of left-field, honestly. I mean, sure, we all wanted some sort of crossover between the two to happen, but I don't think anyone seriously expected it to happen, let alone in an Olympics tie-in. I'd guess most of us had expected Brawl (and we got that, too).

Luigi's Mansion 2 last year caught me off guard... and not being available yet leaves me thinking that Ninty will shock us again with a TP-esque dual-console release on 3DS and WiiU.

Time will tell
Dual release Luigi's Mansion 2 on 3DS and WiiU? Certainly anything's possible, but if your reason for thinking so is "not being available yet," might I point you to Animal Crossing and Paper Mario, shown a year earlier and still not released, and ask if you feel those will receive dual releases as well?

Luigi's Mansion 1 & Luigi's Mansion 2. Definitely didn't see those coming...
Super Smash Bros. 64 came out of the left field. Thankfully, it was a great game for it's time and made what is possibly the best video game series of all time.
Does the FFXIII betrayalton count? If so, that too.
Metal Gear Solid Touch (for iOS)
Then there's also Pokemon Black and White 2, Kid Icarus Uprising, and Paper Mario for portables.

Kid Icarus, twice.
I didn't see the announcement coming (no-one did) and then as release date approached I was completely blindsided by it turning out to be one of the best Nintendo games in years.

X-Men vs Street Fighter

Never heard anything about it in any video game magazine and the internet wasn't that big then.

I just walked into my local arcade and BAM! there it was. Ended up being one of my favorite games.
