Games where you command a ship?

Sosokrates

Report me if I continue to console war
On PS4/XBOX ONE/SWITCH

Im looking for a game like star trek or master and commander

Where you're on a space ship or sea vessel and you explore the seas or galaxy and do away missions and can walk around the ship.

My best guess is mass effect Andromeda.

Are there any games this gen like this?

Thank you.

SW:TOR? At level 15 aprox you get your own ship and crew and you can travel across the galaxy.

Did FTL get a port to consoles? Runs on any old laptop btw.

FTL?

As someone others already mentioned Assassins Creed 4 - Black Flag you should take a look at Sea Of Thieves: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rbE8BnO6oug

I'm looking forward for this one - the Alpha was fun.

Oh yes I plan on getting sea of thieves, black flag does have the navel Warfare part.
But im looking for a game where exploration of the seas or space is an integral part.

The acronym is the actual name. Stands for Faster Than Light, it's a top-down choice-driven roguelikey starship command sim about navigating a star system as you flee from an enemy force. It has a bunch of ships to choose from, different races of crew, lots of events (though no actual direct control away missions) and cool ship battles.

There's a bit of a Battlestar Galactica feel to it.

Black Flag is completely open, you command your ship and can sail around anywhere you want in that world, then get off at islands and explore on foot, all seamlessly.

Also might want to check out Elite Dangerous for a current space sim and also No Man's Sky.

Mass Effect Andromeda you don't really fly the ship, you simply point where to go on a map and it goes there, there's no like actual flying and space battles or anything like that. It's more of a ground based rpg with the ship merely being a way to transport you to the different worlds where you can embark on ground and explore them along with the quests and everything.

Starflight on Sega Genesis. Starflight is one of the games that inspired Mass Effect 1. I loved back then and today -- Sega Genesis version (by EA) is very playable, the best one IMHO. Awesome theme song by Michael Bartlow/Rob Hubbard.

Haven't played it in like a year or more, but Warframe gives you a ship to walk around in and lets you explore space, travel to planets, and perform away missions...

Another vote for FTL

A simple concept with a ridiculous amount of depth. You can issue commands while paused meaning that you can easily micromanage everything which makes for some really detailed battles that you have full control over every aspect. Using pause is actually an essential game mechanic. You can pretty much run this on a potato as well!

I don't have any for this gen (except for AC4: Black Flag port or stuff like the older Mass Effect and Kotor games on backwards compatibility).

Elite Dangerous gives you a whole 1:1 scale galaxy and you can even land on planets (or is that moons or both) and drive around. The only downside regarding your request is that you can't get out of you your ship and walk around. You are are always in a vehicle of some kind. It is also a game where you have to make your own fun as the the game doesn't tether you to a very structured campaign.

Star Citizen might be your game if you want both of those things I stated that Elite lacks. Alongside the galaxy exploring thing, Star Citizen also has a single player mode called Squadron 42 which is like a proper story campaign. Also, you can get out of your ship and walk/run/fight FPS style on various moons/space stations etc. The game isn't planned to have even remotely the same scale as Elite: Dangerous millions/billions of systems to explore but is looking to have something like 100 or so (which is still a decent number). The game also looks to have planet covering cities Coruscant-style

For something more lighthearted you can check out the upcoming Sea of Thieves from Rare. Or for an AC4: Black Flag kind of game you can check out Ubisoft's Skull and Bones (you only control a single ship by yourself).

Edit: Regarding Star Citizen I forgot to mention that that the game hasn't fully released yet and is still in a sort of early access alpha thing. You can only play it if you pledge currently but I think it is worth keeping an eye on (Youtubers like Bored Gamer and Tactical Advance focus on it).

FTL is fun but sometimes the RND is just out to get you at every turn. Still recommended though.

Haha yes sometimes it just doesn't go your way! That kinda adds to the experience for me, you never know what you are going to get and have to alter your game plan on the fly all the time. There isn't a single tactic that works every time, it keeps the game fresh no matter how many times you've played it through.

Tom Clancy's SSN is the best game of this type I've ever played... do yourself a favor and check it out...

There was a game made by Platinum on the ds that is exaclty that, but i dont remember the name. It's good though

Edit: infinite Space. Go check It out.

Would definitely recommend Elite Dangerous if you’re up for some serious space exploration. You can’t walk around your ship, or at all for that matter, but you can look around in your cockpit which is pretty cool. You can also ride around in a moon rover thing when you do planetary landings. It’s not a very structured game, as others have said, but the goal is pretty much get rich or die trying and it’s fun to explore your favorite way of doing that whether it’s trading, mining, doing missions, pirating, or bounty hunting. I would recommend a HOTAS for the most fun.

I have been looking for something like this to play on console as well. So far my favorite game of this genre has been "From Other Suns", which is basically FTL in VR. It's currently exclusive on the Oculus Rift though.

I recommend Space Engineers. You get a ship which you can fully customize and build how you see fit. You can walk around the inside; land on planets/asteroids and explore/mine in both 1st and 3rd person; repair any damage your ship takes; fly around in a jetpack; fight aliens or other ships; explore derelict ships that are just floating in space...and more.

The only downside is that it's still in early access and quite buggy. The developers do a great job of communicating with the fans as well as implement new features based on feedback. The total opposite of NMS and Astroneer.

If you have the patience, you can buy your own Freighter in No Man's Sky. Also, if you haven't played the original Mass Effect trilogy, do so!

On PS4/XBOX ONE/SWITCH

i thought it was about those platforms only, i 've seen people making PC recomendations.

If other platforms are allowed, then i suggest people interested in the topic to so research about a Wii U title called "Affordable Space Adventures." It combines aspects of the experiences we seen in the VR management Star Trek game with action, navigation and puzzle elements.

It's a quality game for either 1 or multiple players.
