Games where you couldn't beat the final boss

For me, TTYD's final boss was something I could never beat as a kid, but years later I started up the game again and beat it on my second try. Was so dumbfounded at what I had done.

At no point during the final chapter does the game ever lock you in. You can backtrack at any point, and the rooms before the final and penultimate bosses have health blocks which heal all your HP/FP.

Still with no items you're probably fucked vs the final boss, and backtracking is a bitch.

Yep I remember I had to backtrack from the final boss, get a load of items then get back to the boss to have any chance of beating it.

I didn't think I'd be able to beat the last boss in Bound by Flame, it was completely ridiculous. I managed to get lucky and do it eventually, fortunately.

Persona 3 FES. I got bored near the end and just rushed to the boss and after two super long attempts, I just have up.

I had no clue as a kid how to finish off the final boss in Earthbound. My older brother hid the strategy guide from me so I just kept flinging myself against the boss, the only strategy my offensive-oriented brain could muster without figuring out the trick.

Persona 3 FES. I got bored near the end and just rushed to the boss and after two super long attempts, I just have up.

I'm really not a fan of hard and long bosses where there is a possibility that things will go extremely wrong and die in an instant. Many J-RPGs do that, especially on the final boss.

I didn't think P3's final boss fight was anything special but it probably had the best boss theme that has ever existed in the genre. Battle for everyone's souls makes it worth playing it no matter how many the attempts.

Recently played and loved the Kingdom Hearts remaster on ps3. Got to the final boss and after losing a few times against him I realised I didn't care anymore and just quit. Very fun game though.

XCX, I grinding for so many hours and I still didn't beat the last part. I was already forcing myself to finish the game so I was like fuck it and just looked up the ending on youtube.

Super Meat Boy.
I just can't complete the last boss challenge.

I took a break from it and since then never found the energy or desire to want to beat the game.

Mega Man X. Maybe I didn't spend enough time trying, but it seemed like such a huge difficulty spike that I gave up. That's the only game I can think of where I legitimately stopped at the final boss.

When I was young I couldn't defeat Agahnim because I had no idea that projectiles could be deflected. I ended up finding out by reading a guide in a gamestop months later.

Embarrassingly, I quit Golden Sun: TLA for several years because i couldn't beat the Doom Dragon.

Nowadays I would never do this. I had to lower the difficulty of Tales of Graces final boss to from evil to hard. The next day I beat it on Evil because I couldn't stand not being able to do it.

Donkey Kong 64 was this for the longest time. I've had it since the year it came out and only managed to beat K. Rool last year.

Another one would be Yu-Gi-Oh! Forbidden Memories. Fuck the final boss rush and the absurd amount of grinding it would require to have a legitimate chance at beating it.

Mega Man X4. I've beaten every other MM game (even MM7 with that crazy boss fight), but that final boss is insane. I can't even get close.

No matter how many times I tried, I could never beat the last boss in the original Devil May Cry on PS2. It still eats at me all these years later, I must try it again now I'm a lot older.

Metroid Prime :-(

I finally did it, but it was ridiculously hard. A difficulty spike, even, right at the end.

Star Fox Zero's final boss is the last that I really struggled with because the controls and environmental design was an absolute fucking nightmare. Just terrible.

Final Fantasy 3 remake, well kind of, cause it was partly getting really tired of going through the crystal tower and world of darkness ALL OVER AGAIN after dying at the final boss. I just couldn't feel like trying to beat the cloud of darkness.

And heh, bit amusing, in KH1 I was turned off for a few months with the second fight against Riku, but didn't have as much issues with the final battles as a whole.

Trails of Cold Steel
I don't know if it is the final boss, but I'm stuck on
Loa Erebonius
and I have no idea how to beat him.

Zelda: Minish Cap.

If I remember right, if you die, you respawn right before it with only three hearts. I was too impatient to go back and look for more hearts so I tried a few times with three, failed, and got fed up.

Darksiders 1.

Maybe I just didn't power up War enough, but because I just can't beat him, I feel that I just don't have the right to play DS2 yet (despite buying it new on Wii U).

Now of course with the Warmastered edition coming out, I'm torn between just getting my 360 back from my sister to finish the story, watch a commentary-less LP, or since I haven't touched it in two years just wait for the new game on Wii U to play over again.

Never could beat the final boss of Mega Man Battle Network 3. I just couldn't deal enough damage.

I still have no idea how to beat the Billy Hatcher final boss either.

Trauma Center: Under the Knife 2. I can't remember the specifics, but there were certain parts of the last mission that were too much for me. Eventually, I lent the game to a cousin and never saw it again, so I never did end up beating the game. I don't know if I'd ever go back to it, but I did enjoy my time with it.

Valkyrie Profile 2. Just got my ass completely handed to me, went to grind and then lost my save file :(

One day I'll get back to it

The only modern game that stopped me at the last boss was Brutal Legend. I'm not even sure how tough it was, but the final RTS fight was painful. I would get 40 minutes in and lose, which really demotivational. I think I only tried about 4 times, but the time commitment means I will never try again.

As for old games, Ninja Gaiden 2 on the NES had a cheap as hell last boss. The tough run up to him didn't help.

I played the first Silent Hill so incorrectly I assume their was no way for me to beat the final boss.

I think I only had a handgun with a few measly bullets at the end.

Did they make Metroid Prime's final boss easier in the Trilogy? I never found it to be that hard.

I played it on GC and don't recall it being particularly difficult. I do remember it being a bit intense and lengthy (maybe I cheesed it?) but not difficult.

Tales Of Mythology on the PSP.
There a class called the ninja that would allow you to ignore hitstun when using a special skill and ignoring hitstun allows you to deal a TON of damage fast since when you get attacked your attacks don't get interrupted. So I just plowed through the whole game severely under-leveled just abusing that skill.

Everything went well, the fight were challenging but I manged to make it to the end and face off against the last boss. I tried like 20 times to beat him and I just could not do it. He was dishing out way too much damage and I could not be bothered to level up so I just left the game there.

Kingdom Of Amalur on PC
Kingdom Of Amalur was similar. I just ignored all of the sidquest and did the main story missions. I also never bothered to maximize my equipment since inventory manageemnt in that game was terrible. I would just plow through the game with guts and lots and lots of potions!

Then I got to the final boss, ready to do my potion abuse as normal. I was wailing on him and then he launched an attack and boom. Game Over. 1 hit and game over. I was so under-leveled and un-optimized that any one hit from the boss would just kill me.

I closed the game and never came back.

I'm surprised to see so many mentions of Metroid Prime.

I thought it was an easy, but fantastic final boss.
The Omega Pirate was harder.

The only game that comes to mind for me personally is Star Ocean 2.

Although I was very close to giving up on Mega Man 8.

Cross Edge

I think your first playthrough has you automatically lose to the final boss regardless of how strong you are. I stopped playing after that so I'm not sure if you have to go through the game all over again for a different ending.

Final Fantasy X

I either spec'd wrong or was terribly underlevelled at the last save point, I forget. No way to turn back and grind, since it was my only save slot.

My party wiped about half a dozen times and that was that .I didn't learn about the story "twist" until years later.

Banjo-Kazooie HD - the real final, final boss. I maxed out everything and failed over and over, even after watching it done on YouTube :(

Final Fantasy 1 for PSP - I steamrolled the entire final dungeon but then wasn't geared enough for the boss. Made no sense so I just gave up.

Metal Gear Peace Walker HD - probably needed to grind to beat the final boss (which wasn't even the actual final boss) so I just gave up.

Mega Man X4
They were bad, yes, but I managed to beat the boss, multiple times even.
