Games which receive more hate than they deserve.

this thread should be called 'games you feel bitter about because other people don't like them as much as you'.

anyways that said, time to agree with a bunch here.

Sunshine, Halo 1/2, Killer 7, Resident Evil Zero... tonnes.

but enough 'personal opinions'. here's a real one.

Daikatana.

it's average at best, but it's ridiculous that the game is still hated on by people that never played it for it's supposedly long development time.

you know how long it was in developement? 3 years. which is nothing these days.

why do people hate on it? a terrible advertising campaign and a bad first level.

It's surprising how many people hate Halo. As a slightly above average FPS with a fantastic story, I think people need to stop hating and perhaps become indifferent to it.

The problem is that being indifferent isn't enough. The disparity between 'I don't really care about Halo' and the kind of hype halo gets is huge, but you can't make people see that without stamping your feet around like a toddler and yelling 'halo sucks'. Especially when halo probably single handedly saved the xbox from utter failure by being a slightly above average game that everyone loves. Anime fans run into the same problems with Evangelion, which seems to have a depressingly wide acceptance as 'the best anime ever', despite being, as far as i'm concerned, a little bit above average with poor execution. But to get any notice, you have to yell "eva is overrated shit" so people will even bother listening to your arguments.

Is this Mature? No. Is this the Internet?

Fable and Jade Empire.

The former gets a hard time because it was talked up loudly and didn't deliver on all the hype, and the latter I think because IGN gave it a 9.9, which was inflated. It's still a very solid 8.5-9.0 kinda game. Fable a little less than that. But all the times I've read some goober say, "Hurrrrrrr! Fable/Jade Empire suck hard!!" ...Yeah. You're not desperately fishing for attention.

Taken on its own merits, away from all the hype of what it wasn't, Fable is a perfectly playable and actually enjoyable game, but Jade Empire has a battle system that feels you're in a vat of molasses, a cliched story, bad loading problems and a second half of a game that completely falls apart, so I feel the hate is totally deserved. Can't believe I listened to the Bioware/Xbot hype and paid full price for it a few days after launch :(

My picks for games that get undeserved hate:

-FF7 (not the best, nor the worst in the series, but people hate the game due to its popularity and fanbase, not by its own accord)

-Metal Saga (poor graphics and technical ability, but charming and innovative)

-Secret of Evermore (too many people hate it because they think it's what we got as compensation for not getting SD3)

-Tales of Symphonia (seems to be the whipping boy whenever someone wants to mock Japanese RPG styles and cliches... sure it may feature them in droves, but the overall experience was pretty fun)

-Elebits (good control and a fun concept, gets hated on because of its fairly weak graphics and childish story)

-CIMA: The Enemy (too many people were unwilling to compensate for the poor pathfinding, and TRASHED the game)

The Getaway & Primal

Hmm. I was on my way in to post The Getaway, but you raise a compelling point with Primal as well. Perhaps my view on Primal is coloured by the fact that I picked up the deluxe edition at launch for budget price (Game had it on half price sale for some reason) but I found it to be a slickly presented enjoyable adventure - especially later in the game as you picked up the more entertaining combat styles.

Shenmue I and Shenmue II.

They must have gotten some hate since I still don't have my fucking Shenmue III. I personally blame you guys.

I frequently see people describing games as THE WORST EVER, even if the game isn't that bad at all:

Wario World - It may be short and easy, but it's still fun.

Dynasty Warriors
- One of my favourite franchises (One of Japan's favourites, too). It's repetitive, but extremely fun, satisfying, and the co-op is great. The Romance of the Three Kingdoms setting makes the game an even more enjoyable experience if you're into Chinese history (and literature). I sort of get the impression that many people are bandwagon jumping when it comes to hating this title.

Star Fox Assault
- It's an average game, and doesn't even come close to the greatness that is Star Fox 64. Nevertheless, the multiplayer is addictive, and the single player has a few fun moments scattered here and there.

Your turn.

EDIT: I'm talking about hatred on GAF, I suppose. As opposed to unjustified review scores.
I don't know about Wario World but the other two are very justified for being hated. Being a Star Fox fan I was almost set to tears after I played Assault. The gameplay had little to do with anything Star Fox.

And it seems the developers od Dynasty Warriors are only interested in making money with their "Madden" like approach (minor updates every year to be sold at full price) towards the franchise.

You forgot to mention the sidekick AI, like, 50 times.

Being a huge Starfox fan, and just coming off a conversation about this, I can agree. The flight gameplay was great, I thought. The problem with the game was in design choices, which involved, I'm guessing, a drunken party, a blindfold, a big sheet of paper split down the middle with "flight/ground" written on their respective sides, and a few darts. That is why we got only 3 of ten levels in the Arwing.

I don't understand the people saying Shadowrun. The genny and snes ones are nearly universally loved and I doubt many here have played or hated on the SegaCD one.

I'm gonna go ahead and guess they're talking about the RECENT Shadowrun on PC and 360.

That's actually a great selection. A great game it is not, but it really isn't half bad either. The first areas were pretty poor simply due to an awful selection of enemies, but it picks up and present a decent experience.

Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness - It actually wasn't all that bad. It had a few problems because the game was shipped before it was ready, but the actual gameplay was fine... much better than the previous TR games which were still exact clones of the original. AoD did a few new things but still managed to feel like a TR game. I'd say that it's even better than the recent Legend and Anniversary (which feels more like straightforward action games than TR games).
This is another one I was thinking of. I actually really enjoyed the game. It has issues, but most of them can be overcome. The controls are not intuitive in the least, but it isn't impossible to learn them well. The actual storyline, atmosphere, level design, puzzles, and general flow of the game was all very appealing. On top of that, it had fantastic visuals at 60 fps and an amazing score. Taken together, it was a cool experience. People slammed it as if it were completely garbage, however, and that was disappointing.

More recently, Lair is a good choice. The game is far better than a "4.5".

Castlevania: Curse Of Darkness. I love that game for no reason other than it tickled my funny bone in a good way.

Resident Evil 0. I never found it to be mediocre. It's still the worst main RE entry but it's still very fun in it's own way.

Megaman X8. The best one since X3 by far.

FEAR. My favorite FPS.

Final Fantasy VII (mostly on GAF, though).
Final Fantasy X-2 - Much better than X
Xenosaga II - Some amazing environments, great characters, nice story and one of the few RPGs I finished this gen. I like it a lot more than Xenosaga I, which I couldn't be bothered to finish.
