Games with extremely good story on Steam

Undertale

Oxenfree

Soma

Stanley Parable

uhhh?

Anyway looked up Steins; Gate... holy hell is that art a huge turn-off

Went to buy To The Moon, turns out I already had it. Yep that's Steam.

The art might be a turn-off, but I need to say it's story is extremely great, if a little goofy at times. Didn't put it in my list because I didn't know it already released on steam.

No Man's Sky. It's a story about false promises, a lot of plot holes and even has a cliffhanger. Great buy.
But that story's entirely outside of the game. You should be given recommendations that don't depend entirely on external sources! Or if they do it should at least be completely fucking nuts like Killer 7.

Steins;Gate. Time travel stories rarely interest me because I dislike most of the tropes found in them, but the story in this game (visual novel) transcends those stereotypes. By far the best in its genre in my opinion, across every medium.

It's pretty much nothing BUT story, but it's great.

Would Root Double be worth it for someone that did not find the pay-off in Ever17 worth the tens of hours of boringness that preceded it?

- Legacy of Kain games (except Blood Omen 2, pretend that doesn't exist)
- Trails in the Sky FC/SC (but be warned they are slow-paced and long JRPGs, the payoff is nice though)

Can't think of anything else I'd qualify as "extremely good" (that's on Steam anyway). Deus Ex: HR and Dishonored are decent but not "extremely good", storywise. And whoever's recommending Zero Escape games, ignore them, they actually have godawful writing.

Legacy of kain soul reaver
Fucking finally! How'd it take so long, damn you GAF.

Too bad Blood Omen isn't on Steam, since it's even better. But Soul Reaver 1 + 2 + Defiance is great. The PC ports are kind of bad though, but I guess it's serviceable enough.

yes without that doubt, in terms of pacing it's night and day, Ever17 is always slow filled with Slice of Life moments until the climax.

Root Double starts strong with the After Route which has a pacing more similar to Remember11 with a lot of tense and intriguing moments, the Before route is slower but it helps to develop the characters and world.

The charactes here are a lot more interesting and not annoying or without motivations. The journey here is really worth it and you really get attached to the characters.

Overall i would say the only thing remotely similar is the setting and the trapped characters, for the rest like pacing and route structure, Root Double is a lot more solid and satisfying experience!

Would highly recommend Consortium. Lot of branching paths, tons of choice and consequence which I loved. Reminded me of Obsidian's work in New Vegas, though obviously on a much smaller scale.

Have you beaten any of them or just dropped them quickly? Though even if you have, there's plenty of people that disagree with you (at least the first 2 games, ZTD sucks).

Good to know.

If you played it, how would you compare it to Umineko? Because I HATED Umineko (all 8 episodes of it).

Beat 999 (3 times, got the "right" path to the good ending but the game forced a bad ending on me anyway, reluctantly replayed, another bad ending, then was told I was right all along, replayed it the same way as the first to get the good ending... which was complete garbage).

Fuck that game and fuck that series forever. I haven't quite forgiven my boyfriend for insisting I play this piece of crap. :P

I really like Umineko, but you cant really compare the two, Root Double is a sci-fi suspense story and not divided in episodes that you have to connect.

In Umineko the player has to solve a lot of mysteries, whereas in Root Double all of your questions will be answered if you dont already have solved them earlier.

So for me both amazing VNs but with entirely different strenghts!
