Games with good collectibles?

The tendo ones ? This is maybe the worst collectible quest in a game ever lol, having to return to the shop every 3 pictures you take is horrible. I think there are also some missable ones ?

No no no....

It was WAY worse than that. You must be blocking the horror from your mind as a defense mechanism.

Not only did you have to go back after taking three pictures, but that fucker would only take one picture at a time, and took an entire in game day to do it.

That meant you had to leave the shop, use the windwaker to change the time, TWICE and then go back in, 3 fucking times, everytime you had a god damned full camera.

Thank God Windwaker HD fixed that.

Jinjos in Banjo Kazooie

I endorse this post.

Aria of Sorrow

Mgrgrgr... Gimme a Soul, you Peeping Eye fuck!

Love the Crackdown orbs, too.

Hated those flags or whatever they were in the original Assassins' Creed.

Oh, yeah, Shenmue. I wish the new one has some sort of paper with all of the figurines listed so you can cross those you got. If they come back, of course.

One Piece Unlimited Cruise games on the Wii were fun and focused heavily on collecting and crafting. For example, after improving your fishing road by collecting different materials it'd be easier to get the tougher fishes... Or just possible at all.
The biggest fishes were just needed to develop the best recipes, but everything else you could fit in the tank and watch them swimming there whenever you wanted.

So you had a list of fishes/sea creatures, another of insects/land creatures, another of medicines, another of recipes and another one of inventions.
And a bunch unlockable attacks and secret bosses, of course. Just filling those lists and discovering what was behind the sillhouetes was fun enough to forget about the main story being so straightforward, so it's a shame the latest entry (World RED) shifted from exploration, collection and crafting to coop action.

Shovel Knight had an interesting take on this. You collect music sheets and return them to the bard in town for money, and after which he will play that particular song any time you ask. So, in a sense, you're collecting the sound test!

Dang, 3 pages without a mention of The Last of Us? The collectibles added so much to the world, without being crucial to the central story.

Same for Max Payne 3. All the collectibles in there added some extra filler to the story.

I hate collectibles that are a hassle to get. GTA and Assassin's Creed are the worst offenders IMHO. They require you to litteraly comb the whole map in order to find them all. The only difficulty is how tedious it is to find them.

I like collectibles that are interesting to find and/or do not feel like a chore. Such as :
- The Super Mario games (World and modern) and their special coins to get in each level. They're interesting to find because they often require you to think out of the box or go out of your way to get them. And even if you do not get them in your first playthrough, knowing that they are divided to only 3 per level eases the task and it doesn't get tedious.

- Likewise, Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragoon collectibles. They often require more of an interaction from the player than simply walking over them. Spyro can be a little frustrating at time though becausue gems can be tricky to get. But like Mario, they are separated by levels which aren't that big.

- Gwent cards from Witcher 3. There are a lot, which are obtainable by various means : buying them, winning them, getting them from sidequests. They are good collectibles because they are interesting to get, by various means, there are sidequests and stories attached to them.

- Not everyone will agree but Riddler trophies in the Arkham series when they are indicated on the map. The challenge here is to solve the riddle, not really finding them.

- Party members in the Suikoden series. They actually add to the game.

- Orbs in Crackdown, because there is a sound effect cue to finding them.

Red Bipidri in Anachronox. There was this guy who asked you to snap photos of all Red Bipidri in the game, in return for one of the final weapons for one of your characters.

You could spot them by their singing, though taking photos was a bit more involved since they sometimes moved around.

Number one for me are the memory items from Fragile Dreams. Each is a well acted voice-over short story.

I also liked how in both No More Heroes games the collectibles would be displayed in your room. Though I guess the second were more boss trophies in the form of figures.

Loved the Sunken Scrolls in Splatoon that explained the world.

I don't think such a thing exists. Can't remember any time I had fun when searching for collectibles, specially when I began forcing myself to do it in some games to get the Platinum trophy.

Silver lizards and fruits in Shadow of the Colossus are more naturally implemented in the game world tho, so maybe those? idk

Does Forza Horizon barns count? I wish there were more of those.
Good pick. I really did enjoy finding those.

The Crew also litters its ginormous world with car wrecks, with a "you're getting colder|warmer" system as you near one. I doubt I'll even get close to collecting them all, but I'm glad they're there. Its all another reason to go off the beaten path and explore and find some new sights. Love it.

Altered Beast!

kidding aside, Id have to go with

crackdown.

weren't the collectables in that Ps2 transformers game meant to be good also?

My initial thought was that Bioshock Infinite had great collectible audio logs because of how much of the story they explained. Then I realized that they are almost too vital to the full understanding of the story to be hidden as collectibles... which would make them bad.

Now I'm torn.

Animal Crossing New Leaf.

You can collect fish, insects, fossils and art and donate them to the museum. It's fun seeing your museum collection grow over time.

The +1 puzzles in The Witness. I don't think you get anything for doing them, but when you discover one of them you just feel so in awe of the world design. Incredibly clever stuff

Shenmue for sure. I liked getting all the feathers in Assassins Creed 2 and Uncharted: Golden Abyss for Vita.

Also Sly Cooper 1 had easy and fun collectibles for the platinum. You would literally need just 1 run, no guide needed to get it and it was fun.
