Games with obnoxious amounts of DLC

So I just bought Dead or Alive 5 Last Round and I was picking my character's costume and thought that it was pretty nice to have so many alternate costumes. It was fine until I saw some costumes need to be downloaded and I thought to myself that I just needed to buy the season pass to unlock everything.

BOY WAS I WRONG.

Searched around and saw that all 6 season passes plus the ultimate set along with others that are exclusive amounts to over $700. The more infuriating part is that despite being the most definitive edition of the game, 2 characters are still locked behind the dlc for Dead or Alive.

That is absurd until I saw a worse game. Train Simulator of all games has DLCs that amounts to $6000. I thought I read an extra zero by mistake but wow. Who buys these stuff? Rich train conductors?

I'd like to buy all dlcs for every game that I like but this seriously just makes me want to NOT buy the dlcs. I seriously hope there is an ultimate super turbo last round edition that includes everything just for $60 in the future.

Are there any other games like this? I'd like to avoid those games unless I really like them and even then I'll probably not buy the dlcs unless it is a story one.

Dead or Alive 5 was what came to mind before I even opened the thread. And it's not even so much that there's so much DLC to buy. I don't mind that and I like a lot of the costumes. It's more that console store interfaces are just not designed to be able to handle games with dozens, much less hundreds, of DLCs. It's a major chore to browse and buy DLC and even to download pieces you've already bought.

Rock Band, Guitar Hero, etc.

I think the Taiko games are the only rhythm games I know that don't go insane on the DLC stuff.
Rock Band handles its DLC excellently, considering that your experience is directly proportional to the amount of DLC you have and obtaining that DLC is extremely easy considering how great the Rock Band storefront is.

I would be concerned if Rock Band didn't have "obnoxious amounts of DLC"

Are you saying Rock Band would be better with less songs available? That's pretty asinine. Plus almost ALL of my songs from the 360 era work on Xbox One and it didn't cost me a dime to transfer it over.

I might be misconstruing what the OP is asking for.

Overwhelming might have been a better qualify than "obnoxious".

I don't think the Train Sim devs expect you to buy all, or even more than a few, pieces of DLC. You're supposed to just grab the packs that interest you as a train enthusiast.

Rocksmith on steam is the only game that can rival the Train Simulators

It is specialy problematic because it doesn't even have any pack like Rock Band has ....

You have to move past this mindset. You're not supposed to own or buy everything, only what you're interested in.

Wasn't Evolve marketed on how much DLC it would have?

Never played but Crusader Kings 2 is notorious for this, no?
Yep, it's not enough to release a new expansion DLC, oh no, they have to break it up into pieces so you also need to buy updated unit graphics, character portraits and music separately. Well, you don't need to but ya know. Eventually I just stopped caring about the DLC altogether. Payday 2 is another one, so much fucking DLC. New characters, new weapon packs, selling new missions as DLC was the breaking point for me.

Well, no. I guess my personal problem comes from wanting to getting perfect combos on all the songs I can, and the Taiko games while having DLC, don't have enough to make it impossible to "complete" the game I suppose. I have over 400 Rock Band songs on my 360 but I approach that differently - I play guitar, bass, and keys but I don't really try to perfect everything simply because I'd go mad. A bad example, I'm sorry.

I'm ok with games having more content than you could realistically afford, especially when it's only cosmetic like in DOA5. But this is a case where there is too much content, because the sheer number of available costumes makes the whole market impossible to browse.

As other have said, Rock Band in its prime was the best at DLC. I don't even want to think of how much money I spent on the hundreds of extra songs I bought, but I certainly got my money's worth.

I really don't mind the DLC for this game as it's all purely cosmetic, and it's what keeps the support for the game going. If you don't like you don't have to buy it because it has no effect on gameplay.

Easily iRacing is the worst offended I have ran into. It's a racing sim, with a subscription. But beyond just having to pay for a subscription, almost all of the tracks and cars are separate purchases. The cars are $12 and the tracks are $12 but mostly $15 a piece. I added it up to see how much it would buy to purchase all of the content and it would be just about $960 if I remember correctly. That's with a 30% discount for being in the 100% club though! So if you buy the content in smaller chunks like most do it ends up being much more! These aren't cosmetics either, they are fundamental to playing the sim. I love that game but man I am going to need to get a better job to be able to afford it lol.

Music games need DLCs. The more songs the better.

I just wish they had more popular songs from more popular artists though, like they used to have in the earlier days when you had DLC from Megadeth, Nirvana, REM, etc.

Any of those Paradox grand strategy games.

Strategy games, Paradox or not, have nothing on Train Simulator, fighting games and music games when it comes to DLC, I assure you. The only reason they have such a reputation in the first place is that players really tend to want that DLC (since it's often good), and that it isn't cheap.

What hasn't been mentioned at all but comes to mind: Dynasty Warrriors 8, LittleBigPlanet. I actually didn't bother with DW due to looking at DLC page and realizing I don't understand what the hell they were.

Rock Band 3's customs was a miracle - I went from being pretty starved for songs I wanted to having artists I'd never think would come to the game. You do have some rough customs with only one instrument charted are expert, but then you have stuff like half of Genesis's discography fully charted for all difficulties.

I didn't bother buying the ME series because of the overwhelming amount of over priced, never discounted DLC.

Hey everyone, this is Dusk Golem aka AestheticGamer. I have posted on NeoGAF since 2011, and have decided to resign. I have enjoyed posting about horror games here for years, but I no longer wish to support the site and will be leaving for good. I will still be around the internet, I go by AestheticGamer on YouTube, I make games on Steam as Yai Gameworks, and I plan to go by Dusk Golem on other forums. I'll be joining an off-set of the GAF community leaving to try other ventures like ResetEra (Official Twitter for that here: https://twitter.com/reseteraforum ). I hope some of you who read this may consider it, and I plan to try to expose more people to horror games in the years to come. Just not here.

I hope you all are having a good day, and know I always loved the community, and in the end it's the community I'm going to stick with, not the site itself. If you want to follow me, my official Twitter is here: https://twitter.com/AestheticGamer1

That's more of a problem with the store design than anything else, though. Although I'm not sure how to solve it perfectly without providing some kind of game-specific hooks so games that need to can customize their DLC store listings with their own categories and filters (ie, DOA could filter by character, theme, etc, and Rock Band by band, genre, etc).

The "New Add-Ons" section in the Xbox store is especially bad thanks to games like this (seriously, you can scroll to any random page and there's good odds that most of the items listed will be some combination of Rock Band/Rocksmith songs and DOA5 costumes), but that's mostly because that entire category needs to be revamped to match the reality of the current marketplace (it's a design that made sense when DLC was rarer and usually more substantial, but now it'd be better to just list games with new DLC available, and have the game tile take you to that game's DLC list).
