Games with obnoxious amounts of DLC

You have to move past this mindset. You're not supposed to own or buy everything, only what you're interested in.

This, I can't really get upset at the train simulator DLC since you are buying extremely specific regional trains and lines. Costume DLC is the same for me, I don't like all of them so why would I buy them all?

Are people getting upset that games are having support for years from developers in this thread? A game launching with tons of DLC is way different than it coming out over years.

That is absurd until I saw a worse game. Train Simulator of all games has DLCs that amounts to $6000. I thought I read an extra zero by mistake but wow. Who buys these stuff? Rich train conductors?

Don't see them as parts of the game that make not having them means a lesser game, but rather additional stuff to be collected. You are not meant to buy them all, just like actual model train enthusiasts don't actually buy all model train in existence.

In any case, do you actually like every single DoA costumes to begin with?

Crusader Kings II. Waiting for a complete edition before diving into the game.

Diving into Crusader Kings II with all the additional complicated mechanics in place sounds like a really scary proposition. Not to mention, I have doubts that it'd ever be complete.

I wish they'd get on with Dead or Alive 6 already.
5 was great but I'm so sad that they've dumped 5 years into making costumes.
Costumes that amount to over ÂŁ500....

Dead or Alive 5 was what came to mind before I even opened the thread. And it's not even so much that there's so much DLC to buy. I don't mind that and I like a lot of the costumes. It's more that console store interfaces are just not designed to be able to handle games with dozens, much less hundreds, of DLCs. It's a major chore to browse and buy DLC and even to download pieces you've already bought.
Same here thats shit is nuts

Borderlands 2 was money grubbing as fuck. 45 items totalling ÂŁ116.54 at current prices. Most of the items are cosmetics/palette swaps but fuck off 2K/Gearbox.

Good thing I rarely buy any DLC because I hate this practice with a passion. The only exception so far would be all the costumes for Ultra SF4 and Untold Stories for RE5.

mass effect 3 had a ton of dlc, fuck that game

littlebigplanet had a lot too, but you could take a lot of that dlc and put it in the sequel

Yeah a lot of the most noteworthy ones already posted. DoA5, Train Simulator, Evolve.

This thread made me wonder though, are they ever making DoA6 or are they just gonna ride that DLC train into the sunset

I haven't browsed the dlcs extensively enough to know if I like everything. I do like the game though and played a ton of core fighters before buying the full game. Even if I don't like every costume, I usually want to have the choice to pick them.

To be fair, I'm being very hypocritical about this. I like League of Legends and I probably spent $400 and got a few thousand dollars worth of cosmetic items and I didn't bat an eye there. I'm hoping to like the game enough to do the same for DOA but something about it being a console game makes me feel bad about it.

Usually, I don't buy cosmetics and only go for story content dlcs but if I like it enough, I tend to buy everything possible. Although being lttp so no ot and having no one to play with locally makes it harder for me to invest fully on doa.

Maybe I'll just wait for doa 6 and splurge there.

This isn't really a problem of Train Simulator or DoA5. The problem is your "I need to own EVERYTHING otherwise the game won't be complete!!!" mentality. You're not supposed to buy everything. If you want to play Warhammer, do you go out and buy every single miniature GW made?

I still don't know why people is still pressed about Dead or Alive DLC, the game didn't launch with all of those and it's purely cosmetic fluff.

I am pretty sure they are more than happy with people just buying costumes for your fetish favorite character and that's that.

To be clear I have no issue with endless DLC frankly. Make as much as people are willing to buy.

I'm just listing some of the ones that have a ton

Call of Duty, they have the balls to let people pay for map packs when there are lootbox drops to buy. It's ridiculous.

+ dlc and lootdrops in a remaster (modern warfare)

Activision is the worst of them all imo.

I agree that Train Simulator's DLCs are ridiculously expensive.

I'm of the opinion that Train Simulator is best viewed as a digital train set rather than a game, especially as the base app hasn't changed -- the DLC on offer represents (almost) eight years and counting of post-release support. Someone who bought the game back in 2009 has access to the very same options for expanding their collection of trains/tracks as someone who buys it today.

My main problem with DLC along with the amount of it and price to content ratio for some of it is that the stuff never gets permanently discounted. When I'm playing through 5+ year old 360 games that are like 8 dollars, there's still multiple 10 dollar or 15 dollar DLC that stays that way.

I really wish DLC would get a permanent discount more often like games do.

You gotta respect a game that comes without DLC these days. Sometimes I'm checking out the achievements for an Xbox game and I'm surprised to see no DLC achievements, it's such a rarity. Gonna start playing through Trials Fusion soon and there is loads of DLC maps for that, but the prices are good and the content looks quality too, so I'm not too bothered.

Train Simulator is a platform. The amount of DLC is impressive tbh. The intent isn't to have customers buy all the dlc. The intent is to have any train you might care about available for fans. Your train set analogy works well. If you build a train City etc. Do you get mad that there are 1000s of locomotives compatible with your tracks?

What's the problem exactly? I actually quite love that DOA5 is continually being supported with DLC over the past two years. Keeps the game relevant, and outside of buying the characters and story mode, all of the DLC is merely cosmetic. The season passes look intimidating at $92 each, but they go on sale(Ultimate content is 40% off right now) and that set literally bundles 230+ costumes across the fighters. Most other season passes offer well over 100 costumes and a couple bundle a new character and stage in as well. Sales occur all the time, so you can just go a la carte.

The game has seen fun crossover gems with Sam Warriors, KoF, Arc System Works, Falcom, etc... plus online almost guarantees you will take on players using costumes you may have never seen before given the absolute insant amount of them available currently.

Yes, its $$$ to own them all yourself, but that isn't quite the point...(besides close to 500 are included free to unlock through regular play)

DOA5 on PS4 does have its own store function in-game that actually works rather well. Separating all DLC into categories based on characters, costume themes, or even bundles and is overall better organized. The actual PSN storefront is way worse to deal with.

DOA5. They keep on going and going and going with the costume DLC, for years. There are over 1200 costumes by now. @__@
It is especially obnoxious, because I wish they would just move on and do DOA6.

This sentiment is strange to me.
Some people really like a game. And want to keep playing a game. So, content is made for them to extend the life of their game.

What's to get mad at?

Keeping staff on a project and keeping services running has both high costs and opportunity costs, you have to offset that somehow. Would you rather pay monthly fees to keep playing after the first 3 months, instead of the option to incrementally add content by choice?

I hate when I buy a GOTY/Digital Deluxe edition of a game, and there is still content I need to pay for. That's usually the red flag for me in regards "too much DLC".

A few characters, stages, and costumes? Why is it so bad?

What? Out of all the fighting games, PSASBR has very minimal DLC.

Well I adimtely haven't played many games with a lot of DLC. So based on what I have played, PSASBR contains the most excessive amount of DLC. Doesn't really help how limited on content the base game already is and that Sony never released an "Ultimate Edition" version of the game containing all the DLC.

Watchdogs. Someone mad a spreadsheet of everything that was available to pruchase.

Is the Train Simulator stuff actually egregious? That DLC is geared towards hobbyists, so investing in it is similar to investing in a model train set. You don't need to buy $6,000 worth of DLC to enjoy the game, but there's a large storefront to give enthusiasts a large selection to choose from.

This also applies to Rock Band/Rocksmith, and even Dead or Alive to an extent.

Pre-order incentives and launch SKU splitting aren't exactly the same thing.

This thread is about post-launch DLC, and the Watchdogs Season Pass offers everything in a 1-shop pass, even according to that chart.

Yep, it's not enough to release a new expansion DLC, oh no, they have to break it up into pieces so you also need to buy updated unit graphics, character portraits and music separately. Well, you don't need to but ya know. Eventually I just stopped caring about the DLC altogether. Payday 2 is another one, so much fucking DLC. New characters, new weapon packs, selling new missions as DLC was the breaking point for me.

Never played but Crusader Kings 2 is notorious for this, no?

Any of those Paradox grand strategy games.

You guys are "missing the point" on the DLC for CK2/paradox games. The idea of that DLC is twofold: you buy whatever DLC that has features you want and the money from that allows for a free update to old game content. Every DLC for a paradox games brings both free and payed content. So if you don't buy the DLC (because it is expensive or has features that you don't care or some other reason) you still get new mechanics/stuff when that DLC releases.

Crusader Kings II. Waiting for a complete edition before diving into the game.

Are you sure about this? It took me 20-30h on EU IV base game to be good enough to survive with a big country, with the DLC it is a staggering ammount of content.
CKII is older than Eu IV i can't imagine anyone starting the game with a "complete" edition and not freak out about the game

I really wish DLC would get a permanent discount more often like games do.

I also think old DLC should get a price cut however when i looked to buying CK 2 and EU IV the truth is that both games and their get heavy discounts all the time. The DLC for those games is -66% off every few months. In the real world while the DLC don't have a permenent discount they it is almost as if they have.
Not only that paradox has update steam store with bundles which make Completing collections easier and cheaper.

Best part is how the remaster was DLC for the special edition of another game. They literally made DLC for the DLC.

To be perfectly clear, I have no problems with cosmetic dlc. I was just overwhelmed at the amount of it. I'm just sad that a definitive edition still locks 2 characters away.

And I have to admit that I'm a bit eccentric that I either buy everything or not at all on dlcs. Although I have to extremely like the game first as I have done the same for League of Legends.

If I had to name something that I'm mad about is that the possibility of the immense amount of dlcs that I buy will not carry over to the next game. Something that I don't see happening on mobas or games like overwatch that have an inherintly long lifespan or is updated enough that a sequel is not necessary.

This is not the case for DOA 5. Now if I can buy every dlc and have it carry over to DOA 6 then that would be lovely. They could just make more dlcs as more DOA games get made.

I'm 99% sure it won't happen as the business is very lucrative especially as there are people who buys everything like me but given the chance, I think that would garner respect from me and everybody else who plans to buy the dlcs. I also understand that it's a hard thing to do since game engine change and all.

Never had a problem with the DOA5 DLC model. At least the feature complete game itself with all modes and characters is affordable and rest is just cosmetics. The free to play model of Core Fighters is also a good move.

I went on PSN to download CoD MW Remastered and I forgot about the Library function so I searched for Call of Duty...scrolled down and Advanced Warfare has an obscene amount of DLC.

Dynasty Warriors 8 had an insane amount of DLC that didn't carry over when it made the jump to PS4. Costumes, maps, cosmetics. Sheesh.

The reason I havent bought DOA is this

Even though I criticized DOA5 earlier myself, there is no reason to completely abstain. DOA5 Last Round is a pretty nice package out of the box, with lots of characters, stages, modes and already hundreds of costumes included. The costume DLC is just additional fluff, that you don't really need.

This.

Sales happen regularly on the DOA5 DLC. Granted, the Season Passes rarely go on sale, but they do(Ultimate Content Pass is 40% off right now), but every week different bundles are chosen to be reduced for a la carte consumers.

As for DOA6. Yea, they'll start the cycle fresh again. Unless they want to carry the same engine and player models over, which would piss off consumers that expect overhauls to the engine and dramatic visual improvements, nothing will transfer. Besides, many of the popular DLC costumes would need re-licensing for a new product anyway.

Personally, I would prefer they add in more stages to DOA5 in the interim now(more legacy stages at least!).

Yeah, browsing the stuff for LittleBigPlanet is a pain in the arse for this exact reason. I don't mind the amount of DLC because it's almost all cosmetic, but actually browsing the store is a goddamn chore.

Hmm...I know all the PS4 DLC for DW8 was cross-buy with both the Vita and PS3 version.

Did it not do the reverse?

Steam does this so well. Just right click and select to view available content and there's a big list. Press a button to add everything to your cart, then delete what you don't want. Also it just downloads and installs all your DLC with the game itself, but if necessary you can just go into game properties and select what you do or don't want installed with checkboxes. For all I don't like about Steam this is one thing it absolutely does right.

15 dollars for all cosmetic costumes, 2 dollars per stage, and 5 dollars for 2 dlc fighters is not bad at all, no differen5 then a game like smash and pretty fair.
