Games With Sad Endings

Is that fact that I've seen the Steins;Gate anime (which is fantastic, for anyone who's wondering) going to hinder my experience with the game?

And yeah, MGS3 is right up there as one of my favourite games of all time.
Not qualified to answer this, since i played the game before watching the anime.
But some of my friends who did the reverse, did enjoy the game; since you really connect with Okabe in the game and it has in depth explanation.
I cried at most of the endings (i am a grown man).
It is so good. I'd say its worth experiencing, since You only got the true ending in the anime.
I'd suggest u play the game an year or two after watching the anime.

Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days
IIRC:
Roxas watches Xion die in his arms. Axel ends up losing his two best friends due to Xion's death and Roxas' departure. The final cutscene is the start of KH2, and Roxas doesn't even know who he was.

Silent Hill 2

Yes, but seriously. SH2 is extremely sad.

Majora's Mask
(because of the Deku Butler's son...Link wasn't able to save everyone)
Limbo
Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons
To The Moon
Okamiden
(Bittersweet ending, because even though the world is saved one of Chibi's companions dies)
The Cat Lady
(Multiple endings...in all bar one Susan's friend dies)

Pandora's Tower has sad endings.

And I would say Link's Awakening.

Link was better off knowing he was saved after drifting.

Soul Sacrifice - The whole game is sad, especially Librom, Sortiara, and Magusar's struggles. The ending just further drives home what a bleak and hopeless world these characters inhabit. This is honestly one of the best lore driven games in recent years.
Such a fantastic game, It sucks a PS4 port hasn't or isn't happening, I'd love to play it all again but lost interest in my Vita

AC3 was a real downer.

After all the effort Connor went to, all the errand-running and stabbing people in the neck, he gets back to his village and everyone has gone. He's killed his father and his best friend, his mentor has kicked the bucket and now he's alone. The end!

He later got married according to his encyclopedia entry in Black Flag, but the relationship was such a clusterfuck it doesn't bear thinking about.

Crisis Core :'( pls SE, (spoilers to the end of crisis core ahead)
retcon his death and bring back my precious up beat zack.
My favorite FF character and one of my favorite ff games
OG Persona 3 ending is pretty sad
FES is still sad too imo

Persona 3
Red Dead Redemption
Shadow of the Colossus
Tales of Xillia 2 to an extent (the normal ending should have been the true ending imo)

I think The Last of Us is the obvious recent one.

Yeah it's definitely a good example. Everyone calls Joel an asshole, and he is to some extent, but when you think about the gravity of the situation and everything that's happened, I don't think it's fair to completely blame him for his actions.

Silent Hill 2

One of my favourite games of all time. I consider the water ending to be the "true" ending.
And that letter at the very end. Christ...

To the Moon is to this day the most depressing game I have ever played. The further you get into the story the more crushing revelations you are exposed to, and the ending is, to me at least, almost unbearable. I'm pretty sure I've repressed most of the game's plot. Despite this, one of the best video game stories I have ever played.

Also, although not nearly as depressing, Spec Ops: The Line ends on quite a tragic note.

I always see To The Moon on Steam but for whatever reason, I'm yet to play it. I'll have to pick it up!

And yeah, Spec Ops was very interesting.
Can't remember the plot exactly, but it was great to see a game tackle the subject of PTSD, especially at a time when military FPS games were all the rage.

Even though the game wasn't all that memorable, I felt my emotion strings tugged at the end of Final Fantasy X.

I could care less about Titus, I felt bad for Yuna

Red Dead Redemption's ending is depression incarnate. The epilogue does little to alleviate the pain of seeing what goes down during those final moments.

Also...

Shadow of the Colossus
Klonoa
L.A. Noire
Final Fantasy X

Last of us. Left behind (played separately) in particular wrecked me like nothing else.

Ending of Half life 2 Episode 2 as well. Not only because
Eli died suddenly and Alyx was super emotional
.but because he said he was gonna finally give us some answers dammit!

The Last of Us counts as a sad ending, in my opinion, but it's great because it's also complex.

Our main characters both live, but they're irreversibly changed and their relationship likely broken forever. In a way this is about as sad as it could have ended.

FFX is still one of the saddest endings I ever remember experiencing. It was perfect! I pretty much didn't even play FFX-2 because I didn't want the feeling of permanence at the end of FFX ruined.

Agreed. X's ending made my eyes water.

Radiata Stories...
Basically, the game guilts you into remembering what you gave up for your choices in each ending. There is no truly happy ending in that game. :\

Ooh yea birth by sleep is also sad (spoilers ahead)
all 3 of our main characters failed, one sleeps in sora's heart to recover, one trapped in the realm of darkness, and the other lost his body, his soul is trapped in his armor or something, only nomura knows whats up with terra

Brothers
Half Life 2: Episode 2
The Last of Us (if you analyze the implications)
Shadow of the Colossus
The Walking Dead Season 1
Dear Esther
To The Moon
FFX
FFVIII
FFVI

Terranigma and Mother 3. The endings really stuck with me for a few days.

It's also why I think the games are still some of the best games out there today. Love it when a game can actually affect me emotionally. Doesn't happen often enough.
