Games you got because you kept seeing their threads on GAF

I purchased a lot of the big demo-less PSN games because of GAF hype before I realized that there is a contingent of shills who hype every demo-less PSN exclusive release to the moon, and the fact that my tastes are different than a lot of PS3 owners here.

flOw, Flower, Pain, etc. I regretted them all. I realize these games have many fans, however. They aren't bad games, I just didn't like them (and they are boring).

I bought SSDHD before there was a demo and I don't regret it but I think high-action twin-stick shooting just isn't my bag. It's one of the best of the genre, though.

Ultimately, however, I've learned not to trust GAF-hype and instead rely on demos and my own instincts when it comes to purchases.

Excitebots - Thanks GAF! Not only is this game awesome, but the coupon thread allowed me to pick it up for $5.

Batman: AA - Again, awesome stuff.

Assassin's Creed II - After seeing my roommate play through the first one, I had absolutely no interest in the franchise. Now I'm really looking forward to AC III, but all this DLC and AC II - 2 (in Rome) shit pisses me off. As long as I don't have to play the handheld iterations or buy DLC to get the meat of the story, I guess I'm okay with it though. Fun game, but definitely still has its problems.

CoD: MW2 - I want my money back. Not a bad game, I guess multi just isn't what I'm looking for in my FPS.

Uncharted. I downloaded the demo as soon as it came out, and my reaction was, "OK. So it's some dopey schmoe in a sweatshirt and jeans running around in a game that basically amounts to Tomb Raider meets Ico meets Gears of War. I think I'll pass." A few months later this place gave me the impression that I was all wet and apparently it was one of the best games ever made. So I bought it. And while I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy it, I don't think it would have been a huge loss if I never played it.

Devil May Cry 1/3 - Really loved 1, not a big fan of 3 it is way too hard.
Final Fantasy X-2 - Haven't played it yet
Prince of Persia series - Decent but the combat really blows. Haven't gotten around to 2/3 yet.

Scribblenauts : Don't even started the game yet :lol
Dante's Inferno : meh
Darksiders : Not that far in the game but like it so far.
flow : Got it free recently. Glad I came to GAF that day.

Borderlands- The game feels repetitive, story is not that interesting, and the concept of weapons being the main draw seems uninteresting. =(

Usually I have the same taste as the general opinion of GAF on all games. Only can remember Assassins Creed 2 and Crysis as games I thought were bad but GAF seemed to love. Luckily bought Crysis for cheap on Steam and borrowed AC2. Still don't believe they are good games, but critics, friends and GAF say the same. But hey, that is also mostly the case with MW2.

Beatles: RB
Was just gonna pick up the box set and call it a day.
Street Fighter IV
Fighting scene certainly has changed since 2000.
L4D2
Everyone moved onto the sequel.
Shadow Complex
One, if not the best XBLA game available on the marketplace.
SSF2HD
1080p, redrawn sprites, hype. Out $15.
AC2
Loved it.

Street Fighter IV.
Not a hardcore fighting game fan, but picked it up on Steam. I wasn't too impressed (maybe because I'm terrible at the game. Tried using the Keyboard and 360 pad to play, couldn't do anything.)

Just wondering- is it actually possible to get all the secret reports? Hard Taboo Miniamoto rips me a new one every time I try for the Week 2 Day 4 report, I wouldn't mind if I didn't have to use fucking Beat.

Yes it is. I got all the reports, myself. I remember that battle being hard but I forget how I did it. When in doubt, use clothing that provides regeneration.

Demon's Souls - Asian version.

Didn't like it much at first, took a break from it for a few months... but then I heard it was coming out to NA. I proceeded to kick myself, then soldier on through the game so I could finish it before the NA version came out.
It was through this perseverance that I learned to love the game, and ended up buying a copy of the NA version as well (after I finished the Asian, of course).

Lost Planet. Bought it for the ps3. It was awful.
Demon's Souls. Positive reactions and shortage on the game around that time (asia version) made me extra hyped for it. One of the best games i've played this gen.

Uh, there is no chance GAF told you the PS3 version of Lost Planet was worth buying. Because it sucked. I knew it, GAF knew it, everyone knew it. Terrible port is terrible.

I bought Resistance because of the GAF-love.

Fuck you, GAF.
You didn't play in the clan, did you?

Mass Effect 1
Love it.

Persona 3 and 4.
Threads about 4 made me buy 3, wich I like a lot, and that made me buy 4 wich I love even more.

Scribblenauts have control problems, but it has a lot of potential.

Good:
Darksiders
God Hand
Chromehounds
Dead Rising

Bad:
Morrowind
Torchlight
Banjo N&B
Bioshock

Meh:
Persona 3
Tales of Vesperia
Prince of Persia 2008
Assassin's Creed 2

I'm sure there were others, but these jump out.

Yep...

The Good-
Scribblenauts (Have yet to really get past fooling around on the first screen though :D )
Ratchet & Clank: ToD
Uncharted
Civilization IV

The Bad-
Killzone 2

haven't bought anything based off GAF hype in awhile, but these purchases i can blame on GAF entirely.

Burnout 2
Earth Defense Force 2
Katamari Damacy

all fucking excellent games, so thumbs up GAF

Phoenix Wright, I'd heard it was well written and I needed something to play on the bus to my (at the time) new job every day. After seeing it mentioned again and again, and the parody gifs as well, I decided to buy it. Well done, Gaf. Well done.

My Edgeworth game is on pre-order now, because I followed Gaf's advice.

Big Bang Mini, wasn't disappointed. Love this game.

The Sims 3, decent fun but I don't play it much.

Kameo, decent again, but I'm not a huge fan. I'll probably finish it and sell it.

The only one with a clear link to GAF was God Hand. It was alright, but the game was exhausting. I always felt like I was going to break the controller when I was playing it.

GAF convinced me to pick up TWEWY and I loved it. I also enjoyed Splosion Man, which I found out about here.

MAG

Didn't think i would be able to get into it, but after reading some of the scenarios people were having playing online, i decided to pick it up. Im playing it way more than MW2 thats for sure. I like the team aspect.

Well orange box was a terrible port too. That did not effect my enjoyment from the episodes. Unless the ps3 port is totally a different game, i would say lost planet is not that great (played only the campaign).

The Orange Box port wasn't as terrible and the games included are much better than Lost Planet to start with so yeah :lol

Scribblenauts: Good for what it was, I guess
Batman AA: Really awesome. Would have been GOTY if the year wasn't stacked
Demon's Souls: Favorite game in years

GAF's definitely saved me from buying a good number also. I find reading GAF's opinions better than reviews a lot of times because you can generally get a good read on what puts people off to a game. Someone ALWAYS blows the flaws out of proportion, but it's a good way of figuring out if any of those flaws are deal breakers.

For example: Dragon Age- general consensus: Good story and character interactions. Good combat system. Too much filler combat. Shitty itemization. I can live with that.

Mostly Steam sale recommendations-

Outrun 2006
Painkiller Black
STALKER SoC
Defense Grid
Overlord
Freedom Force

And of course, Scribblenauts, ugh. Most of the hype in that thread came from the novelty of the lead designer Jackson posting in it, and towards the release of the game the thread reached a fascist regime level of information control. Several posters who had played the game attempted to voice their concerns with controls and gameplay yet the vast majority of the thread (who had not played the game of course) relentlessly attacked them for daring to speak out against the supposed "game of forever".

One of the games I remember most clearly influenced by seeing all the GAF threads about it was GOD HAND. Saw it for $16 a few years back at Circuit City, figured "what the hell?" based only upon GAF hype. Absolutely loved the game, too. A lot of games mentioned in this thread are ones I were already interested in regardless of GAF hype (any DQ game, Valkyria, Persona, Demon's Souls, TWEWY etc)

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune: Saw nothing but praise and love for this game, so I decided to pick it up. I am so glad I did. Fucking amazing.

Valkyria Chronicles: Bought it when GameStop had it new for $30. Loving it so far.
