Games you love, levels/areas you don't

FFX: The Cloisters of Trials. You'd best find the secret spheres in there first time around, or the Dark Aeons will make re-accessing those cloisters hell. Plus the trials themselves sucked anyway. Also, Blitzball.
Zelda: Majoras Mask: The water dungeon. All those twisting currents gave me nightmares. And that boss, oooh, so annoying.
Super Mario Bros: Any time the Hammer Bros show up to ruin my fecking day.
Lylat Fox Wars 64: The submarine stage. Ugh. So dark, so slow, so annoying. *spins analogue stick whilst just locking on and destroying anything that it locks onto, waiting for the stage to just end*

Been going through the Half Life 2 collection, so Ravenholme, and the underground portions of episode 1 and episode 2 (Ant Lion lair I guess). I swear Valve sits down designing games and asks themselves "Hey where can we stick an overly long, totally shitty underground portion?"

Yeah, the whole Half-Life series is very filler heavy. 's a bit of a shame, since I enjoyed the games and I feel like I'd love to do a total replay (would probably take me like half a year at my current gaming pace) before Episode 3 comes out. But the prospect of going back to redo some of those really long sections, like the buggy driving sections in HL2 and the antlion den just does not sound fun. And it's not like any of these sections are really "bad," they are just all like 15-20 min longer than they need to be.

That being said I actually felt that Episodes 1 and 2 were a little better at keeping up the setpiece to overly long slog ratio, so Valve is probably getting it dialed in pretty well.

Zombiebot King fight in Metal Arms: Glitch in the system. It's a perfect storm of stupid shit.

-Timed fight yet they don't actually give you a timer. You know time ran out when you just lose.
-Infinite spawning of smaller yet very fast and powerful bum-rush underling enemies.
-Requires you to use the worst weapon in the game (slingshot) to lob a grenade into the Zombiebot King's open mouth (area the size of the head of a pin on screen) with no target reticle and maybe a second long window in which to position yourself and aim.
-One hit kills.
-Oh! And missable collectables (gold chip and I believe a health upgrade) that you need the boss to get.

Gears of War - Centaur tank vehicle section

Gears of War 2 - Assault Derrick vehicle section

I also loathe any section of a Gears title that forces me to fight a Nemacyst. Especially on Insane. I'm usually thrilled to be playing any other part of a Gears game other than these.

world of warcraft - most of outlands (i actually liked nagrand and zangarmarsh but thats it), especially since 1-60 was revamped, and northrend was pretty damn good too.

Every blockbuster sci-fi shooter has an "inside the big monster's asshole/colon" level I hate. See: Gears of War 2, Halo 3, Mass Effect 2, etc.

Lost Planet 2 as well, I think it's the 1st Episode boss... don't like it one-bit... but in LP2 you don't have to go inside if you evade.

Meat Circus.

^This.

Man I really hated that level and it almost kept me from beating that game.

Final Fantasy IV: The moon. Hell, the moon in Final Fantasy IV: The After Years, too. I just play up until that point and quit.

The Great Bay Temple in Majora's Mask is pretty annoying, too.

All of the underwater stages in New Super Mario Bros.. I just skip them in replays.

Demon's Souls- Valley of Defilement. The second level sucks sooo bad.

I'm going to say Demon's Souls, and level 3-2, or in particular the Maneaters. I always leave them for last.

Huh, I don't have any problems with them.

Ugh, how can I forget the Cloister of Trials. After my memory card messed up on me halfway through the game, I just Gamefaq'd those sections. Just horrible!

I agree... and Ravenholm seemed to last too long. Every time I play through HL2, I dread the thought of having to go through Ravenholm. If I could snip that part of the game out, I'd be happy.
If this happens to me I usually cheat a little after the first playthrough. (Namely noclip, buddha, etc.)

Modern Warfate 2's Estate map.

What's that you say? Let's make an entire level filled with colors that a colorblind person can't see? Fantastic idea! What could possibly go wrong?

Viewtiful Joe: The Magnificent Five. No saves between them? Really Clover?
Okami: The ark or whatever the boat thing is. I have to fight against all the bosses again? And they don't do anything new? And this is the third fight against the dragon? Areyoufuckingkiddingme.jpg

Radiata Stories, the last level of the game. I hate that the sand would drop you down to the first level and you'd have to start climbing all over again.

I sometimes think I'm the only person who enjoyed those sections of the game... (well not Blitzball, I'm not a sports game type person.) The puzzles in those areas were pretty simple, they never bothered me.

Yeah, actually, I really liked the trials. (Hated Blitzball, though. At least you didn't have to win to progress the story.)

FF7 - Midgar. Too confined and I hate the run down aesthetic.
EverQuest - The plains of Karana. Way to make a trip to Freeport take an extra hour.
Sonic the Hedgehog - Labyrinth Zone. Fuck labyrinth zone!
Edit: damn, beaten by one minute

Medal of Honor: Allied Assault: The freaking sniper level. Oh hi, let's spend the entire level using trial and error to figure out where where you're getting shot from. That's fun, right?

Zelda TP: Opening sequence up until you get the sword and shield. OoT's lasted about 10 minutes. TP took, what, an hour and a half?

Jedi Knight 2: Token stealth mission. I can take down dozens of stormtroopers in seconds, but now I'm supposed to suddenly avoid them for fear of some alarm being sounded? What?

Battletoads everyone recognizes, but wtf is this? I hate when GAF gets into the whole posting screens with no description mode.

Haha, Capcom really does love that, don't they? But yeah, those didn't feel like anywhere near as much of an awesome/cruel challenge the Megaman games give you with that, IIRC.

KOTOR2 - opening level - so long and boring, let me off that fucking mining colony! I don't actually love this game: I love KOTOR1 and this intro was enough to keep me from loving part 2.

Dragon Age - nothing worse than waves of enemies: any time there's a scene with enemy waves it's horrible. I'm looking mostly at the final levels before you face the last boss. DA2 was 10x worse with this. Oh and the Fade.

Oblivion - opening dungeon - where's my census and excise building when i need it?

It's Modern Warfare 2's Estate map. Easily a contender for the worst map ever made in a multiplayer shooter.

And don't be so jumpy, the first part of my post got eaten somehow. Probably when I switched over to Chrome. ><

Metroid prime - Phazon mines it's such a long level with barely and save spots and elevators to use as shortcuts

Wind waker - That haunted dungeon (the one where you control Medil) because those floormasters and redead can go to hell.

Pikmin 2 - The water wraith floors, it may be short but that fucking Water wraith is a pain in the ass to avoid, plus you can only use blue pikmin trying to kill fire, electric and poison enemies and hazards.

Castlevania: Dawn of sorrow - the water section, it's slow, the fish boss was annoying to battle, save spots and the warp were far apart and it had medusa heads.

Phantasy Star Online - that escort mission that ended with a boss fight (De Rol Le). You are fighting on a raft, trying to kill this big snake while trying to keep a stupid and useless NPC alive.

Diablo 1 : I dislike the caves for some reason. Maybe because they're full of those acid-spitting dogs that can hurt you from everywhere while you usually have to find a path to get to them.

Gears of War - Centaur tank vehicle section

Good one, it goes from being extremely fun to being extremely frustrating and unfun as soon as you step into that vehicle. I always dread it when I replay the game.

Easy one: The Murray/Bentley minigames in Sly 1 and their levels in Sly 2. The minigames were too simple and frustrating at times and their levels in 2 were simply not nearly as fun as playing as Sly. Plus, both are just annoying characters in general. You could cut out that content entirely and have a better game as a result.

Oh and the Fade.

The fade is a little too long but I'm playing DA for the first time on PC and that part isn't nearly as bad now that I'm able to disable that awful, headache inducing blur filter.
