Games You Love That Bomba-ed

VrppoQ8.jpg

The graphics were terrible and the story was sub-par, but this has some of the most fun combat I've ever experience before or since in a Star Wars game. Force choke a guy and while you're holding him throw your lightsaber and cut him in half? Push dudes off cliffs while you shoot lightning when they attempt to force pull themselves back up? The possibilities are endless.

Multiplayer for this was AMAZING. I played with my clan for months. Miss those days. :(

Wonder how the HD version did.

EDIT: On the one in the post above the post above this one.

My name is Garcia "Fucking" Hotspur, hunter of demons and slayer of pendejos like you!
Such a great overlooked game. Fantastic atmosphere and an amazing sound track. People who shit on the gameplay can eat dirt as far as I'm concerned. It's a better game than most third person shooters included the Gears games and the shit that goes by the name of Resident Evil these days.

Binary Domain yes. Best third person shooter this gen.

Disaster Day of Crisis also, but that was down to Nintendo's self-sabotage more than anything.

Did PlayStation All-Stars bomb? I guess that.

I dunno. Sony said it sold over a million copies, and I've seen games I'd have thought were "bigger" names sell a lot less and be called successful.

However, you could say that it also wasn't a... smash hit. Haw!

Rest in peace, my sweet prince. You gave me endless hours of CS-style play mixed with teleporting, flying, running resurrections, and the best CTF I've ever played.

I watched some gameplay on this game and it looks amazing.

I hope Microsoft removes GFWL, adds in Steamworks, proper mouse controls, and Dedicated servers.

Probably not popular enough for that treatment though.

Baten Kaitos Origins. Sad because its a huge step-up from the prequel, had some great music and voice acting. Also a fun battle system (though it took some getting to grips with and some people found the fast pace a bit much for them). But released on a dead system (the last game that anybody cared about was Odama and even then that is only Nintendo nuts care) and never hit Europe due to that.

I guess I should thank NOA for deciding to allocate localisation funds despite no chance of return though...

I guess Excitebots deserves an honourable mention...this thread was Sequels You Love That Bomba-ed, right?

Hatsume Miku, is that you?

I've seen Binary Domain mentioned a lot on GAF as being underrated. I remember playing it at E3 and it seemed like the most generic thing ever. What's so good about it? Someone can link me to a thread about it if that's easier.

Oh I thought from the title this would be about games you were happy that failed. Damn I had so many games ready to list!

I guess Republic : The revolution bombed and got terrible reviews.

So many:

Xenosaga Episode III: I don't know why they did this, but Namco only released the absolutely terrible Episode II in Europe (more than a year after the US version came out) and it bombed horribly (a complete lack of marketing didn't help either). Naturally this killed any possibility of an Ep III release over here.

Rise to Honor: If I remember correctly this game sold over 300k copies in its launch period in the US alone. Still not enough appearantly since Sony canceled the sequel and never ever mentioned the series again. The game had very high production values and the concept of a twin stick fighting game worked surprisingly well (much better than in Death by Degrees which was released a few months after).

Primal: Same as above only with worse sales numbers.

Ghosthunter: ...or even worse salee (SCEE Cambridge was criminally underrated).

The Bouncer: Back then the game was heavily criticized for being too short for a full price release. Nowadays most games are about as long as The Bouncer but without as much replay value. Needless to say it bombed horribly in the western markets.

Playstation All Stars Battle Royal: Few games received so much hype for the concept alone. Unfortunately it seems like Sony was not willing to grant Superbot enough time or funds to even have a chance to live up to it. Without money hats it's no wonder that publishers only allowed using characters from games where the next entry was due and I think this is what broke the game's neck: The first party characters were absolutely fine, the gameplay mechanics were unusual but you could get into them within minutes. Sadly most people could not look past the weak third party lineup and the term "Smach Bros. wannabe".

Street Fighter x Tekken (Vita): No surprise either but a pity. All in all this is the best version of the game, it plays like a dream, has all characters and still an active online community. Buy it!

Honorably mentions: Shadow of Memories (Shadow of Destiny in the US), Shadow Hearts (bomba by default since each of the games deserved sales in the million range), Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Chaos Bleeds, Urban Reign, Summer Heat Beach Volleyball, Frequency, Amplitude, Bloody Roar 4

Oh, and first thing that came to my mind was FUSE - the lack of it in any of the replies means that it's either a bad game (doubtful considering who developed it) or that really no one played this game...

No it isn't, it REALLY isn't. Tha's quite an insult to Contra.

3rd person game with jumping, multiple vertical levels to combat in, variety of different weapons, range of difficulty, short fast-paced levels, larger than life bosses with multiple ways to take down, environments ranging from jungle to snow to spaceship interior, powerups up the wazoo...one of the few games that actually supports local co-op.

Ya. It's Contra.

Supreme Commander - Best rts ever made that no one played.
Supreme Commander 2 - Not as good as Supreme Commander but still a lot of fun.
Demigod - 2nd best ARTS game behind dota.
Sacrifice - Best game of all time. Revolutionary and unparalleled game play and incredible art.
Psi Ops - Best multiplayer in any game ever. Two people could control one person. It's still revolutionary to this day.
Twinsen's Odyssey - Really fun action game with unique characters.

Not sure if it bombed sales-wise but the reviews were lacklustre. I played this to death on the gamecube. Loved every minute. Also +1 to Resistance 3, personally think its the best shooter this gen and the most underrated game of all time

Not retail, but this bombed pretty hard on release...

I love it, it's the closest we'll get to a HD remake of Crimson Skies and it pains me to know that we'll get the sequel with ground missions....

This bomb still hurts...

Aw. I figured it didn't do well, but I thought it was a pretty solid multiplayer title for what it was. It was far from a half-assed use of a license.

I'm sure anything that comes to mind has been mentioned: Alpha Protocol, Vanquish, Retro Game Challenge, Binary Domain, the Yakuza franchise, Eternal Darkness, Retro/Grade.

Pretty much all the 360 games I loved most. PDZ, Kameo, Viva Pinata, Banjo, Blue Dragon, Bayonetta (I think), Vanquish.. Pretty much every Sega game on the Dreamcast/Saturn/Xbox, Beyond Good and Evil. I often wish I had the taste of the normal gamer so I could continue playing my Assassins creeds or Call of Duties instead of being constantly disappointed when all my favorites tank.

Is better than DOTA in almost every regard, except the fact that the playerbase totally dropped out.

Now I play DOTA2, begrudgingly, to get my MOBA fix. But right-clicking and hitting F is just not the same as having full character control : (

With good reason. I thought the controls were terrible. Also there is something to be said for the elegant simplicity of the first Geometry Wars.

One of my biggest irritations at Activision for sacrificing Bizarre on the altar of the James Bond license is we will never see a Geometry Wars: Galaxies HD.

I played this game with a DualShock 2 using a DS-to-Gamecube adaptor and it was to-date my best Geometry Wars experience.

The Secret World has a pretty low userbase so I would name that. A MMO needs lots of players or it just dies, which is disastrous, considering the amounts of cash you have to invest in something as big in scope as an MMO.
Sacrifice was a gem and had the best VA back then, which costed the team of the studio that made it their jobs.
And more recently, ZombiU. Best Horror game in a long time but the sales didn't reflect that, sadly. Honourable Mentions also go out to TW101 which I still have to buy.

The first game in the series was shit, and probably poisoned the well for this one (along with the fact that core gamer support for the Wii had pretty much dropped off by this point.) Red Steel 2 wasn't a perfect game, but it had some excellent core gameplay, a strong visual style, and was one of a handful of games that showed some potential for motion controls. If it sold enough to get a sequel that spent a little more time developing its mission design, the series would be in a much better place today.

As underwhelming as the single player in Red Steel was, its multiplayer was incredibly stimulating. It was probably one of the Wii games my buddies and I played the most over the years (I think we only played Brawl, Mario Kart and Mario Strikers Charged more). I bought both games, and apart from Red Steel 2's western theme, having no local multiplayer is what hurt it the most in my opinion.

Edit: Oh, and I was also going to say XIII. Such a great FPS. Loved the artstyle, loved the gameplay, loved the story. It's simply horrible that we'll never get to know what happens after that cliffhanger at the end of the game.

Yeah, that one, too. Easily one of my all-time favourite games.

It's a damn shame The Puppeteer wasn't pushed to be a PS4 launch title.
I definitely think it would have gotten more attention from launch purchasers. The game looks gorgeous and charming. With GTAV and Beyond coming out (not to mention next-gen launching in two months hype), I didn't even realize this had released. :/

my pick?

The game was a true work of art. Its combat brought it down. Graphics, art direction, music, story... absolutely wonderful stuff. The game was still playable (if you were familiar with tank-style survival horror controls it wasn't much of a problem), but unfortunately by the time it came out RE4 had essentially killed that clunky combat style.
It should have been recognized (storywise & thematic depth) alongside the likes of Silent Hill 2, IMO. Sadly it was ignored and buried in a shallow grave.

The DS Castlevanias. Which led to IGA being pushed to the side by Konami.

only Order of Ecclesia Bomba'd (bomba'd hard I might add) the rest of them did fairly decently, or at least decent enough to get sequels made. IGA really lost face with the terrible PS2 3D Castlevanias and Konami was waiting for a 2D one to fail to get rid of him.

I would like to add Half Minute Hero, I hate myself for not buying this for $30 and waiting until it hit $10.

I remember reading reveiws for that game. It had some of the lowest scores I've seen for any game ever.

This one really fucking hurts. Not only did it bomb, it killed off the series. And if there was ever a series that could make ingenious use of the Wii U's gamepad, it would be this one.

Man, fuck life.

Wonderful 101

...Okay, I haven't played it yet but I just know I'll love it.

I've beated and I can tell you. It's a magnificent game, one of the best I've played and it doesn't deserve the bomba :(
I just hope the game has some legs in the future of WiiU. It could happen with the word of mouth, who knows.

Loved Binary Domain, but it sold terribly in the West. Doubt we'll ever see a sequel.

And this two also.
