Games You Loved And Found Out Later That They're Considered Bad?

xVshv4s.jpg

Dude. I played the shit out of this game.

NFS Pro Street is what comes first to my mind.

I was like 11 when it launched, had a blast with it, and eventually found out that people thought it sucked.

I even beat again last year, so yeah.

I love Kirby and The Amazing Mirror, but some people consider that to be the worst Kirby game.

I also really love Twisted Metal 2013. If that game had a better storyline, it would be the best Twisted Metal game.

Remember Me

I got Remember Me as a free game from Ps Plus. I heard nothing good prior to downloading it, and most impressions included a pun on how “unmemorable” Remember Me truly was. I was curious to see how mediocre the game could be, but I was surprised by how thoroughly I enjoyed Remember me; despite its flaws I found the game to be endearing, and downright fun.

The combat and ability to create your own set of combos was simple, yet engaging. The plot of the game was silly, but the way the story was told was entertaining. The concept of memories and the impact they have on who we are was fun to delve into, and the ethics around “remixing” someone for your own benefit was fun to think about.

Remember me had a great visual identity as well. The environmental design, and overall art design of this game really drew me in; it is quite beautiful in that respect. The soundtrack was also (forgive me) very memorable. The simple reverbs and stutters in the ost go a long way in nailing the identity of Remember Me, and carry the theme of this game well.

Overall I see this game as a great first installment in what could have been a great series. I don’t think the game had a chance given that franchises it was compared to, like Arkham and Uncharted, were already on their second or third games. Those franchises had the breathing room to grow, but Remember Me unfortunately failed to capitalize on the standards set by market leaders and suffered for it.

I feel like a few people are misunderstanding the thread.

For example, Skyward Sword is not considered a bad game. It simply isn't. A group of people who are loud about their dislike for it doesn't change that. It's critically acclaimed and just about every Zelda gets some sort of backlash after release.

Some people have mentioned Burnout Paradise. I think that game was a massive disappointment but it's not considered a "bad game." It got good reviews and was divisive among gamers.

Someone even mentioned Code: Veronica. What?

Blasto is considered a bad game. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5 is considered a bad game. That's what the thread is about.

Dragonball Budokai Tenkaichi 2 for the Wii. I adored that game, gimmicky motion controlled special moves and all.

I also really liked Rayman 3 back when it came out, I thought it was great. Tried replaying it now but the PC port seems to be a mess and the controls feel awful somehow.

Mystic Quest. Growing up it was one of my favorite games, then I found out that apparently it was a dumbed down formula of some much superior games.

Still love the music though.

Oh my god yes. It was my first jrpg on the snes (and the first game I owned for it actually) and I loved the shit out of it, replayed it multiple times. Only way later did I learn about it not being liked. (I replayed it recently and it's indeed not very good but that music though)

Gauntlet: Dark Legacy on the Gamecube. Playing that game co-op with my brother is part of the reason why we're so close now.

Good times :')

Then I read it's not considered a good game and even inferior to the PS2 version.

This is one of mine too, but ironically I forgot about it. xD

I never owned a snes but I loved Bubsy and demanded to play it everytime I went to my friend's houses. Never knew everyone hated it until a couple years ago.

Resident Evil gun survivor.
It's an ugly beast, but it's got the best story in the series and it's highly playable. Love it.

DMC2
Probably my 3rd favourite DMC game after 3 and dmc.

LA Noire. It had its flaws, but I still really enjoyed it and especially loved the realistic atmosphere reminiscent of the Getaway games. Gaf seems to utterly loath it though.

Others that come to mind:

MGS4 - C'mon. Some of the writing is a bit dumb, but this was the last TRUE MGS game. Not that open-world garbage.

GTAIV - Not the best game in the series, but anyone who thinks this is a bad game is insane.

LA Noire is an amazing game and I would have given anything for a sequel. Too bad that studio is done.

I liked Assassins Creed III. Yes the ending wasn't great but by this time I was into Ass Creed games for the Animus gameplay not the present day story and I really did like III. Still do.

Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls. Indigo Prophecy was already a known game to me from the internet. The other two I played before internet opinion. Needless to say I can't wait for Detroit which I'm sure will have many detractors again.
I really liked Jade Empire. I'm not sure loved is the right word, but I have fond memories of it. Whenever I see it mentioned it's negatively though.

All I know is that this game got 9.9 from IGN.

Assassins Creed 3 and Infamous 2. Both were hated by many people and I never really understood all the hate these games got. Infamous 2 was probably my most played game on PS3 and Assassins Creed 3 was amazing.

Shadow of Mordor - (Love is probably a strong word, but I enjoyed it)
Phantom Hourglass - This I legit had a great time with.

I just posted about this in another thread, but Turok Evolution for the PS2. I was pretty young when I played it and I absolutely loved this game. Had no idea that people disliked it until I got older.

Nights: Journey of Dreams
Picked this up for about $8 at Gamestop one day and thought it was a wonderful experience, if flawed in some areas. Really, aside from the few levels where you play as the kids, I enjoyed just about everything about the game. Loved the hell out of the soundtrack too, but that goes without saying. Keep in mind that I've never had the opportunity to do anything more than endlessly listen to the soundtrack of the original, but I can't really imagine it being that mindblowing gameplay-wise to where Journey of Dreams could be anything other than a very mild disappointment. Add that to the fact that Nights getting a sequel at all was a minor miracle, I never really understood why it was considered bad and not worth checking out.

Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood
This one's interesting, because not only did I love this game, but my sisters did too. I was still new to RPGs back then, and I felt that it was a great introductory RPG. Being familiar with the comics, I liked the "official" take on echidna mythology (shame about the trouble it caused). Sound-wise, I didn't think much of it, it served its purpose as nondescript background music well enough. The flash cutscenes didn't bother me either, in fact, I thought they looked quite nice. I definitely preferred Chronicles' cutscenes over the Rush duo's. Gameplay-wise, I thought it was fine aside from a few touchscreen hiccups with inputting attacks. Overall, I thought was a solid starting RPG, would've liked a sequel, and thought it deserved better than to be the answer to the "Worst Sonic soundtrack" question.

Inspired by DarthButcher thread: What's the worst game you've ever played?

I thought about something a little different just because I remembered a game (self explanatory thread title):

I remember two:

This guy:

And this other fella:

I was a kid then but the first game was a platformer were you could mount rhinos and answer quizs at the end of each level, isn't that great!? :P

The other... I don't know, looked pretty cool and adventurous to me... to make things worst, never played the original. :O

Anyway, I found out a couple of years ago that these are terribad games that shouldn't exist.

Which's yours?

Wait Alundra 2 was considered bad? I remember playing that as a child and I enjoyed it.

I really liked One on PS1. I've since seen other people love it, but I remember critics giving in mediocre scores at the time.

When I was younger, I played lots of bad games and found some enjoyment out of them. I played hours and hours of the Star Trek Next Generation Genesis game. I just wandered and picked battles, creating my own story in my imagination.

Driv3r is the one that comes to mind first. I know now it's a pretty bad game but I had a lot of fun with it when it first came out because I wasn't allowed to play GTA yet lol.

Another one would probably be Enter the Matrix.

Code name viper on nes. Loved that game, played it so much though I never could figure out why he's not wearing pants. People online day is just a bad rolling thunder clone. I played rolling thunder after and viper is a ton better.

Also great music, even though we don't know for sure who compressed most of it
