Games you tried really hard to force yourself to like, but couldn't

Okamiden - I absolutely love Okami. This did not have the same kind of charm to me. I think I played about 6 hours and just felt like it was not very exciting or fun.

Final Fantasy 4 Heroes of Light - I loved the look of it and the idea of a classic FF game. Unfortunately everything other than the look fell flat. The story was bland and the gameplay was too simple. And the dungeons were "if you don't have this magic you'll die". Bravely Default is what this should have been (except the repeat chapters, but I stopped at that point basically).

Monster Hunter on 3DS...

My god. I really wanted to like that game. It was described as Dark souls mixed with Pokémon but I just couldn't take it.

The bad graphics (imo) horribly slow movement and animations and the way the game does a really poor job of streamlining the experience for a new user was just too much.

I'd also like to throw in Skyrim...I've tried starting over and re-playing that game over and over and I just couldn't bear it either. Awkward and janky controls, boring story and bland graphics really hurt the experience. Also the game play feels very early to mid 2000's for me and with games like the The Witcher out it just puts it to shame..

Wasteland 2
Dark Souls
Star Craft 2
Pillars of Eternity
Divinity Original Sin

(Still plan on giving those last 2 another go though)

Uncharted series and The Last of Us

I actually played through the entire Uncharted series and was left with a resounding "ehhhhhhhh". I Love Love the set pieces and cutscenes, but everything else is just so....bleh. The climbing is so boring and it was never fixed, there is zero tension when climbing. It really only felt exciting when something actually broke, so I was anticipating something breaking rather than "fearing" it. The puzzles are very average, and outside of the way they are presented arent actually interesting. I feel like Uncharted series is the best average game ever made if that makes any sense at all.

The Last of Us I just find stressful and boring. The presentation of the story is excellent, but outside of the ending it is just very very derivative. The game itself i very dark, but not in an interesting or unique way, its just "dark". I like the movie "The Road" but playing "The Road" for 15 hrs just doesnt sound interesting or fun in the least.

I acknowledge these are very good games just not for me in the least.

Not a single game but a series. I've played Sonic Adventure, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic Advance, the demo for Sonic Heroes, Sonic Rush, Sonic Colors, and Sonic and the Secret Rings. I grew up a Nintendo kid so when Sega went third party and Sonic games popped up on Nintendo systems, I gave them a shot. I figured, this was a hugely beloved character, these games were the biggest rivals to Mario. Must be something good. The best I can say is Rush was ok fun until the water stages began and Rings and Colors were decent for a once through. Other than that, I don't see it. Even the classic Sonic 2 was a huge miss. I tried. I really tried but well and truly fail to see what the appeal of Sonic is.

I've been buying and playing a number of DS games on 3DS over the past several years, and this is exactly how I feel about these two games. I put a lot of time into both but they were both so under-stimulating that I ended up dropping them.

Splatoon: Preordered it pretty blind and extremely excited. It forces you to use the Gamepad, and I simply cannot play an fps on that thing. Same reason I had to abandon ZombiU back in the day, but this was a much bigger let down. I tried getting use to gyro controls and it's just not for me. I read every patch note for months, hoping for pro controller support, and nothing. At this point I've just chalked it up to experience and use it as a reminder not to digital preorder Nintendo games anymore.

Yeah I've been trying to like Sonic since I was a kid, but I've never seen the appeal. People love the classic games and I've had a few conversations with some of them, but it will probably never click for me. It's either slow and boring, but the controls are manageable, or its fast and exciting and I have almost no control. And that's just the 2D games, the 3D ones are way worse.

Smash 4.
Went to tournaments. Played online matches. Played all the characters. Got the mechanics down and worked hard at getting good with Little Mac....but the game is fuckin' crap. I mean it's a very unenjoyable game.

I keep up with the news, updates, discussions and buy all the DLC (Characters and stages) so I can play with friends at local sessions, but I cannot force myself to like a game that is bland and boring. Once the casuals go and jump on the NX Smash, then people will see this game really isn't that great.

Splatoon.

Another one of those objectively good games that after an hour I just didn't want to play anymore. Weren't any hooks to really keep me playing.

I don't understand why you'd play a game 9 times if you already didn't enjoy it on the first playthrough. Was there a specific reason behind this? Genuinely curious.

Because I was convinced that "Oh, once you replay the game with the knowledge of what you learned before, then what you saw before has changed into something else" and the whole idea of replays make the game better. Since Earthbound was one of those well regarded and renowned games, I just wondered if it did get better in that format, I don't know why 9 times, but I did it anyway to be extra sure if I saw something.

Short and to the point, I still don't see anything truly special about the game, the single playthrough of Mother 3 I did was enough to let me enjoy that entry for comparison.

Uncharted 1. Maybe I didn't hate it, but didn't like it much.
In the end I didn't play the others, but that's partly because my PS3 is now dead.

Uncharted. I kept playing for hours even though I didn't find the gameplay fun solely because I really like the characters, settings, and plot.

When I noticed myself dreading the next enemy encounter I just stopped playing and just watched the rest of the cinematics on YouTube.

(I played Uncharted after beating The Last Of Us, so it wasn't really fair to the older game)

Right now, Star Ocean 5. I went into it believing that even at its worst, it couldn't be more disappointing than Star Ocean 4, but it really is.

Turns out giving it no budget and into the hands of the Infinite Undiscovery director was not a recipe for success.

Witcher 3. I really want to like it because I hear the story is so good, but I just can't force myself to like it.

You might like uncharted 4 then.

Final Fantasy X. It felt i had constipation for 3 weeks and the loop didnt want to come out because it was too big. I seriously push hard to like it.

God of War. On paper, it has lots of things I like. Greek mythology. Combo/Character Action gameplay. "Mature" themes.

In practice, it's just dull and mushy feeling. The combat never feels tight or snappy. The attitude of the game is unlikeable. I tried to get through the first game multiple times, and I just get bored.

Code Name S.T.E.A.M.
Excellent concept and fantastic style that I still want to like, but never quite did or will.

Puzzle and Dragons: Super Mario Edition
The quintessential mobile game, or so I hoped. What an awesome idea for a game, but it's unnecessary complication made for too steep of a learning curve. So close, yet so far.

Insert Elder Scrolls game here

On paper, it sounds awesome but my eyes glaze over 20 minutes in. I don't have the same problem with Fallout games either.

Persona 4.
Liked the idea, loathed the actual gameplay. I felt I knew the twists before they happened as well.

Pokemon.
Tried to get back on that horse recently, can't get over the repetition and paper thin story.

I tried to like uc4 following all the hype but it's simply a bad, dull game. What a shame thry took such a huge step backward after tlou.

Also what a shame all that artistic talent went to a boring game abiut uninteresting characters

dota I really want to like it but i cant force myself to like it, I wish i could rewire my brain to like it.

DOTA is like drinking. The first few times you hate it, then you start liking it more but it makes you feel awful. After a while you strike a healthy balance. Then you go too long and it starts to ruin your life :(

Metal Gear Solid 3...I LOVE MGS, MGS2 and MGS4, but despite multiple attempts I could not get into MGS3. I guess it's the jungle atmosphere that just didn't do it for me. Of course I had zero interest in MGSV either.

Uncharted 2. The first one was a well paced, light hearted adventure with great characters. It was short and sweet and charming. The second one added terrible stealth mechanics, even more shooting, glitchy scripted events and pointless climbing. And it went on for way too long. After getting stuck in a scripted event that wouldn't load for the 5th time I just gave up. Too bad because everybody considers it one of the best action games ever made and I thought it was trash compared to the first, which people love to shit on now.

Ocarina of Time. I have tried many times to get into this game but just can't do it. Furthest I got was the 3DS version last year but got bored during some obnoxious side quest and left it for a while. My brother came over some time after that and commented on my gathering-dust 3DS so I gave it to him.

Witcher 3. Everyone praises it, and I love the world and characters, but the moment to moment gameplay, movement, and combat feels really off and unresponsive sometimes. There is noticeable lag between button presses and some of the attacks, and even when fighting the most basic enemies, there are times when they can throw you in to an unbreakable stun cycle, or trap you in a small AoE attack which you can't escape because apparently turning around on the spot is too difficult for this game's mechanics, which just makes it too frustrating to continue.

Banner Saga - combat is bottom of the barrel turn based combat and there was way too much of it compared to the decision making and story

Dark Souls - I found it to be pretty boring and tedious. It honestly didn't seem that hard once you figured out how an enemy fights and could avoid it's attacks so without a strong story (imo) it just felt pointless to me.

KOTOR 1 & KOTOR 2 - I just can't get into the RPG star wars games (I loved the jedi knight games, republic commando, rebellion). Too much running around and combat was too slow.

Basically any CRPG:

Baldur's Gate (1 and 2)
Planescape: Torment
Pillars of Eternity

I've given all of these several tries but the combat mechanics just don't jive with me.
A real shame, since people always talk very highly of these games. :(
Maybe try turn based ones? I haven't played planescape o don't know if it is one but Shadowrun Dragonfall/Hong Kong and Divinity Original Sin are all excellent, new turn based crpgs.

Resident Evil 6.

Bought it full price at launch and was extremely disappointed in the game play and performance on PS3. Bought it full price at launch of the PC version and tried and tried and tried to like it in the years since it came out and it never clicked with me.

Resident Evil 4 is my favorite game of all time and I fucking love Resident Evil 5, I've played through each of those more times than I can remember and I can never make it more than an hour or two in any of the campaigns in 6 or mercenaries mode in 6.

Metro (both games, put less time into Last Light)

Shadowrun Returns & Dragonfall. I love CRPGs but something about those games just doesn't click with me.

Sleeping Dogs

As a FF fan - FF XII.

As an RPG/Squaresoft fan - Chrono Cross.

Wanted to dip my toes with The Witcher series - Witcher 2. Still haven't played 3.

GTA.. everytime there's a new one I give it a try. I want to understand why the masses love for it. I want be one of the cool guys who is all about them GTAs.

I am not.. I am a failure.. I can't stand GTA. thus I don't fit into society.

Skyrim...it was just a drag for me, vastly prefer Morrowind and Oblivion over it any day of the week.

Borderlands. I don't why I couldn't see the magic like everyone else. It bored me.

This too. Somehow I got bored of the second one even quicker than the first.

Dragon Quest Heroes. I love the music and visuals but it's very different from the frantic action I'm used to with Hyrule Warriors and Pirate Warriors 3.

Resident Evil 4. Tried to play it when it came out and was so critically acclaimed, but I just couldn't find any ounce of enjoyment out of it. I remember getting to a part with a castle maybe? And guys with hoods? It just didn't do it for me.
