Games you were unable to play due to DRM

I lost my instruction booklet for Teenage Mutant Ninja (well, Hero over here) Turtles for the Sinclair Spectrum, complete with stupid password matrix you have to use when loading the game. Could never play it again.

I think it was S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky that had TAGES and I was never able to activate the game. Had to crack a game I bought off of Steam lol

Never picked up Diablo 3 for PC because of its "DRM" (along with the scummy RMAH). Eventually I did pick it up on XB1/PS4 and put in like 500 hours.

Lots of copy protected floppy disk games on 8/16bit computers have issues when played via emulators.

It would take a lot of work for emulator developers to work out every single protection scheme.

Eg Mike the Magic Dragon on Amiga does access a specific floppy disk track that is impossible to reproduce

I gave up on a lot of Steam games when the offline mode always kept saying "you need to go online", or when switching between online and offline mode left my "Limbo" game save in limbo.

Haven't encountered issues in more recent years, but also not playing much on PC anymore. When I am, it's mostly DRM-free (Humble / GoG).

Raiden 4 and Strania are two other contenders, though the first can be bought on GOG.

I had to do shady stuff with Bayonetta's PC port because for some reason anything past the tutorial barely played over 5 FPS, I saw that the Steam forums recommended doing shady things and it completely fixed the performance

None. Never once had an issue and honestly believe most people who complained about it were/are pirates.

Why not? Even though it has the online requriement, I can't imagine that D3 is actually using much data.
It actually waa using quite a lot. Last time I checked it used up like 300 to 400 kbps, depending on how much was actually on screen.

Thanks to GFWL I cant save anymore in Bioshock 2. I later got it on Steam though, so that problem was eventually solved.

Jesus. What kind of plan are you on that you can't spare 400kbps? Even if you meant kBps that should be chump change nowadays.

GTA 4 on pc is a broken mess for me. Got it to work once but now with GFWL gone I can't launch it. Don't get me started on the various Securom issues

I once imported some games for SNES and couldn't play them until I ripped some tabs off the system. Same with Dreamcast, but I had to create a boot disc.

When my PS2 suffered from a DRE, I lost access to my entire library of games, same with my GC, Xbox 360 & PS3.

I remember wanting to try playing on my tv in my living room (no internet) with my PC and Alice: Madness Returns refused to run with an EA box saying it can't connect to the server

I'm not sure if it was arkham asylum or one of the bioshocks but the fucking GFWL locked me out at some point in one (or possibly even both) years ago. Both are steam now iirc so it's not much of an issue anymore.

I used to hate games that made you have the disc inserted at all times. I bought your damn game, quit hassling me. There used to be a sketchy site I don't remember the name of that was basically a catalog of no-cd cracks and that was a godsend before digital distribution became widespread.

I used to find a crack for any game that forced DRM style activation or required connectivity.

Pirates getting a smoother ride than paying customers is always frustrating.

Doom (2016)

Was excited to try out my newly installed GTX 1080s with this game in my loving room 4ktv.

Didn't happen.

Needed internet connection to verify license in order to boot up game. My pc is wired only so I couldn't start it. Buying a wifi adapter wouldn't have been a big deal, but at the time it was annoying as hell, a mainly single-player game needing an online check-in? Really?

Not sure if the removal of Denuvo now changed that.

Wait how is your disc drive failing a form of DRM? That's just hardware failure not developers fucking you over and giving you a worse experience than pirates would have.
I do feel you on stupid region locks though. I remember freeloader being a thing back in the ps2/GameCube era for that. Then Nintendo brought region locking to 3DS and promptly got rid of it for the switch thank god.

None but the closest came recently with the original Bulletstorm, which has been removed from Origin and Steam but available for download if you have a CD key. Due to GFWL, I was unable to start the game but found a workaround.

Same. The original run of bulletstorm would not work in any way due to GFWL. Had to find a work around.

I couldn't play Might & Magic Heroes VI for something like a solid week after it came out because the Ubisoft servers were down (it needed to authenticate once before even allowing their offline mode, and ubisoft's bullshit DRM also circumvented Steam's built-in offline support). I took a screenshot of the error:

I've largely avoided buying Ubisoft games while they're new since then. Either waiting for heavily discounted sales (PC) or getting them used (PS4).

Had to use some 3rd-party tools to get Fallout 3 running due to GFWL.
Was not able to get game saving working in GTA IV the last time it tried it, due to GFWL.
Had minor issues with SimCity 2013 at launch, due to its online-only DRM.

NBA 2K14 or 15, whichever was first for PS4/Xbox One... It wasn't strictly because of DRM, but you couldn't play the single player franchise mode because there was this always-online microtransactions virtual coin system built into every mode. 2K had terrible network infrastructure so for the first 3 or 4 months of that game being out, you couldn't play most of it.

Batman AA - GOTY edition crashes on start.
I mean blame is mostly on Microsoft for GFWL, but the "patched" version that was supposed to remove it is still hobbled as the end result.

I've also read some people having the same or similar problem resorted to pirate version as a means to actually get something that works.

Arkham City on PC, I have used an external DVD-ROM drive since 2010 and city refused to work over it at all, completely flat out failed to do anything multiple times.

Bought the game in a steam sale for a digital copy and it was flawless there, so the dvd purchase was a complete waste, this was back when I used to collect GFWL titles.

Asylum fully patched on steam has like 1 in 20 chance to give you a false GFWL error and boot you out of the game, it still happens today as they never fixed it.

If you count always online (or stuff locked behind online that shouldn't be), only really notable one so far for me has been Hitman.

It's a game right up my alley, and they took a right step eventually allowing unlocks to be used offline. They are still just one step away from it being a game I can purchase (letting you earn those unlocks offline).

But yeah I'm barely able to keep up with all the other games I'm interested in so it's not like I would benefit all that much from having another game in my backlog.

There have been other games I had been somewhat interested in, but ended up having always online. They didn't turn out so that great anyways. I've gotten to Terri most of them via betas and demos.

GTA IV.

the game was a broken mess. i got into the settings but never actually managed to load the game. i even installed GFWL. i heard they updated it a while back so might give it another go soon. it was such a hassle that i just bought it for PS3 again.

Recently tried to purchase and install Forza Horizon 3 and I could not get it to download. Apparently the Microsoft Store has countless issues that wont even allow you to complete a download.

After multiple stalled attempts of the 52.29gb download, I tried tech support, who eventually remote'd in to my computer and opened Edge, did a Bing search for "Trouble Shooter Sega", and wasted over an hour of my time.

Through many hours of forum searching and attempts to fix the "corrupted cache" of the Microsoft Store, including a fresh install of W10, I refunded that shit.

I was pretty excited to play some Forza, and after years of sticking with Steam and GOG, I simply cannot justify using the Windows Store anymore. Hope they can get it working someday!

Walking Dead season 2. Did not want to work no matter what I did, wrote them on the forums, everything to get it to work... nothing. Played it on console.

Does rockstar social club works?
It failed me in a lot of different games, but it really pissed me off on Max Payne 3 (it's a fucking single player game).

I couldn't play the PC version of Assassin's Creed 2 on the weekend it came out because uPlay was down the whole time. I got offered a free game out of a selection of five or six game. I chose Hawx. Installed it but couldn't start because something was up with Tages.

I wasn't able to play Bioshock because the SecuROM on disc didn't work on Windows 10.

But then I contacted 2K Games and they give me valid Steam keys, for free.

Nice.

400kbps is my whole bandwidth, and I'm in a large town.

The plan isn't bad. In fact, it's really good (I get fixed IP, IPv6 support, no cap, hundreds of free TV channels, free phone including most international countries and mobile phones, a free mobile line, and the device act as full router, DNLA server, blu-ray reader and digital recorder, all for 30€/month).

It's just the lines are quite old, and the DSLAM should be updated. :/

WOW. That's inconceivable to me that there's still sub megabit internet.

Like you would need a cap at that speed anyway. :P

I would personally trade pretty much everything in that package for good internet speed though.

I've never had any that I couldn't play at all, but definitely had StarForce kill a couple of expensive DVD burners back in the day. Oh, I bought a physical copy of The Club that didn't include a GFW Live key, so I couldn't do anything with it, but Sega support straightened it out for me.

So I guess fuck StarForce and GFW Live.

Every mobile Nintendo game. The only time I want to play Miitomo is on the subway and I can't even run it there.

Also, not gaming related but activating Windows. I reformat every so often and reached my activation limit. Really annoying calling them and telling them I need to use my key again.

Trackmania Nations. This fucking securom corrupts any recent version of Windows. The worst thing is the game is free.

What's up with the retail PC version of Viva Pinata? Last I heard MS had fucked it with GFWL so I haven't even tried to reinstall it.

Which version of Windows is that? Windows 10 and (I think) Windows 8 store your PC data on MS' servers. So long as you don't make any big hardware changes (like a new motherboard), they'll automatically activate when Windows is reinstalled. You don't even have to enter a key.
