Gamescom: Octodad is Still Completely Nuts

The thing that makes Octodad a hugely entertaining game as well as a hugely entertaining idea is the controls, which are just unmanageable enough to be hilarious instead of frustrating. Controlling individual tentacles with the analogue sticks, you can approximate walking, opening doors and other day-to-day human functions, but only in a chaotically slapstick way.
For me, Octodad is still the highlight in the PlayStation 4's eclectic and vibrant line-up of independent games. Even five years ago you just didn't find this kind of thing on consoles. Sony President Andrew House said this week that the aim for the PlayStation 4 was to create an environment where the entire spectrum of games can flourish, from the tiny to the titanic. Octodad is a great early example of a strategy that's working.

Thanks for the support ya'll. If you have any questions about the game feel free to shoot them my way. I'm @PTibz on twitter as well.

Does look like fun, but I think that Surgeon Simulator on Steam already scratches the "hilariously inaccurate controls" itch for me. On the other hand (tentacle?) this looks to have vastly more variety.

It's not a launch title, but we're looking to have it be within that "launch window". So it's currently looking like the PC/Mac/Linux versions will be out on Steam in January and then PS4 version will be out slightly after that. We're only a 8 person team so it's a lot of work for the size of the game. Especially since we're still finishing the game itself. We aren't only working on port stuff right now.

One of the things that sets Octodad: Dadliest Catch apart is its story. The game isn't just a few missions with varying objectives. There are about 12 levels all with varying challenges that relate to an overall storyline. There are cutscenes and such as well as collectibles.

We just haven't revealed as much yet because we're looking not to spoil it. :)

Looks really charming and funny.

Wow only 8 people that's pretty amazing.

Good luck to you and your team :)

Edit:This is the third gaffer game I seen this week so awesome.

Thanks for the feedback. I shall certainly keep an interested eye on your game; all the best of luck with it :)

No port-begging intended, but: Is there any chance for a Vita version?

We'd like to, but we haven't had the time to investigate how possible it is just yet. If it did happen it would be after the PS4 version. As much as we'd like to do cross-buy from the start it doesn't seem possible with our current resources.

I have a Vita myself and adore it. So I definitely understand the want for all the games on it.

Alright! Seems like a fun game to play with a
lot
of beer by your side.

Doesn't appeal to me one bit. Looks ridiclious boring. Will wait for a decent review or piece, that explains Octodads greatness to me to change my mind.

Octodad: Dadliest Catch is GOTMFF. I played probably 50+ games at PAX East this year and this was easily my favorite. Can't want for it to hit!

Okay, so one: Octodad is hilarious.

I've watched a lot of people play a lot of games in the past, but I've seen very few that can gather a crowd the way this game can. Katamari Damacy might be the last one I remember -- eight years ago. When this game was being demoed at PAX East, the crowd watching whoever was playing was losing their shit. Every little thing that happens in this game is hilarious -- the constant, flailing difficulty at accomplishing the most simple tasks is just beyond funny. All the humor comes naturally from the gameplay, but the different scenarios and background makes the humor a lot more durable than something like QWOP.

Two: Octodad isn't just funny, it's a metaphor for life.

Everyone's had the feeling sometime that they're not suited to their own life. You start a new job and can't believe you're actually qualified to do what you're being asked.... you start a family and can't understand how everyone but you seems to have everything so together... There's actually a term for this: impostor syndrome. Octodad is a pitch-perfect take on this: you play as someone who just wants to live a completely normal, average life, but is terrified that his ludicrous secret will be revealed at any moment and blow the whole thing up. That struggle just to live daily life is something that plenty of people can relate to, and Octodad satirizes the absurdity of that feeling (and the kernel of truth underneath it) so well.

And three: it's called freaking Octodad: Dadliest Catch, for goodness' sake. How can anyone say no to that?

This game is a must buy for me. My friends and I have spent hours laughing at stuff like QWOP and Surgeon Simulator and the concept behind this one is pure genius. This may be the first game that I wind up streaming.

Day 1!

I was watching some Gamescom footage on YouTube the other day and came across a video for Octodad. It looked like a lot of fun. Definitely looking forward to it.

Absolutely buying this game. Shame it wont be available on launch, it was cemented into my plans for launch day diversity :)

Hope it happens. Octodad with rear touchpad controls, yummy :)

One of my most anticipated games right now, amazing it's just 8 people working on it. The theme song is the greatest thing I've ever heard. :)

I'm really looking forward to this game. It seems the perfect kind of game to show off to friends and family for a laugh.

Its odd that this game is right up there on games on looking forward to playing on my ps4...killzone, driveclub...destiny..and octodad?? yes..octodad.

my daughter (4yr) loves the trailer too...im actually sitting next to her right now as she plays Noby Noby Boy..her hands will need to grow some to 'work the tentacles' well if my assumption that the four triggers move 2 legs each, but we will both enjoy this one.

When I saw the trailer at E3 I couldn't stop laughing. I showed my gf and she cracked up as well! Might be the only game "we" buy together :D

This game is so funny and even funnier when you have a neat freak friend around who freaks out over him "making a mess"

I there a multiplayer coop mode where player one controls the arms, and player two controls the legs?

This is genuinely one of my most anticipated PS4 launch window games, along with lego marvel super heroes and driveclub
