GameSpy's Uncharted: Drake's Fortune Preview

For some reason I got this idea while reading this preview that it would be cool if you had to look at your map in real time. Like, instead of pausing to a map screen, it would be cool if you had to physically pull the map up to your face and it would enter first person mode while the map came up to meet your eyes...and while looking at the map...gunfire would continue, etc...

I was just imagining a mini-game where the old guy in your party got bit by a poisonous snake or was bleeding to death or something and you were racing to the local tribal hospital. During the chase you'd be being pursued by enemy pirate. Elana would be driving and frantically yelling stuff like "I'm coming up to the fork at the river, where do I turn next?!". While she was driving, you would have to manually pick up and read the map very quickly and call out directions to the local tribal hospital with context sensitive button pushes...all the while switching between the map view and regular view to shoot it out with enemy pirates. If you sent her the wrong way, you would get there too late. If you looked at the map too long...you would get shot to death. I think it could be very tense, exciting, and innovated gameplay sequence (assuming no one has done anything like this before).

Thoughts?

PS. This game looks amazing and the grenade toss mechanic is BRILLIANT.

That sounds like a good idea with the map, especially when they are basing some puzzles around map from what I've seen. On top of your idea, it maybe would be nice if you would be able to rotate the map manually as well, to make it easier for you to find directions.

The whole thing would be like a QTE, but the game wouldn't be telling you where to go - you would have to figure that. Of course you would also have to shoot from the car in the meantime.

I don't like it when a merc get killed with more 10 bullets from a AK-47.
Its a gun not a toy, come on Naughty Dog, fix it please...

That's a really, really old screen. Here's a couple newer ones:

Sweet Jesus! That's Gears of War with a more interesting cast! :lol

The texturework in the game definitely does have a bit of that Gears thing going on - at least in some scenes. The amount of texture detail everywhere is crazy.

Agreed...this was one of my few complaits about RE4 and I would HATE to see it happen here too. One headshot should kill any human (as should three torso shots). Leg/arm shots should never kill anyone (just knock them down).

I also don't think the player charachter should be a bullet sponge. They should just make the fights more fair so you don't get shot if you're good...period (kind of like real soldiers who survive).

That area looks like it could be one of the Gears levels. The combat/cover controls are also 100% identical (with the exception of no reload minigame). Outside of combat though it's all Jak&Daxter platformer stuff.

They have to choose. They get killed with few bullets and they throw a lot of NPCs or they get killled with more bullets with few NPCs. Question balancing things.

oh cmon the game would be stupid if every guy died in one hit... I don't get this complaint, imagine how dumb it would be to get shot once and go down? that's what you'd have if you were goin for full realism.

Well, that's wha I would like but I know I'm in the minority. Maybe you should only fight 50 NPCs in an entire game..but each one would be crazy because you could die in a heartbeat.

It's like soccer, there aren't many goals but each one is VERY exciting.

...and with better art, half as many bullets than it takes to drop a locust, good VA, more interesting cover system elements (varied animations), more stuff to do in the game overall, and, A STORY...

WTF at the spoilers in that article... Fuckers...

This has potential to pull an RE4... very very much potential to do so...

Well it's quite sad cause I searched for it, but no, you're not the only one now.:lol

By that I meant, I didn't see it at first... and it's quite sad because I was searching for balls in a videogame screenshot. But I went there, I saw it, and I can never go back.

Well in my defense, when the pic first loaded the page was scrolled so I could only see the bottom third or so of the screenshot... it's much easier to spot without your eye drawn to Drake and the trees... right?

...right?

...I'm not gay.
I don't think

This game looks awesome. It's a shame this didn't get hyped to hell instead of Lair, this seems like a much more promising game.

For some reason though I just don't see it selling that well.

Sony has to hype something up this fall... This and Rachet will be getting some airtime and printed ads I'd guess...

No demo before release. They can't take time off from finishing the game. Although, I wouldn't mind them just releasing the three sections we played, those were fairly complete.

Oh are you the guy that played the preview? Were the feet still gliding over un-even terrain? How's the framerate been?

Really looks great, I like the nice bright, open spaces.. It is a nice change from all the corridor, tunnel shooters and action games of late.

Yea I hate it when games do that. PD0, Warhawk, heck, even Gears... I prefer more realistic, Rainbow Six-style gunplay.

how can it not be in beta yet? its got like 2 more months to be shipped out
beta basically means the game is feature complete, but still contains bugs. once you hit beta you won't be adding new stuff to the game *or* engine... you're just bug squashing.

And fortunately for us, the game does no contain that many bugs. Although in the version I played last tuesday, don't know what build it was, did contain one very critical bug.

I booted up one of the three levels, and was walking along picking up ammo as I went. I was pretty distracted by the beautiful foliage (which doesn't react on your presence though) until it suddenly hit me. And by it, I do not mean bullets. On the contrary, at the part where I knew you were being hit I could just strut along without any hindrance whatsoever.

Turned the build was bugged, and the system had to be restarted, since the enemies were not being loaded, no matter what I did. After the reboot, I managed to play all parts, and I was very much impressed. Still don't know how old the build was, but it was a very good game nonetheless.

Were the floating (collision grid and feet aligned with the ground surface) animations fixed?

As far as I can tell yeah, although at one point I was near some water and standing on a rock, and I got caught between a rock and a hard place, eh, plant in this case. For about 30 seconds I couldn't do anything but wait until he tremendously slow slid towards the water.

But the aiming-system and the rest seemed very fluid.

Thanks :D Though getting stuck on objects is one of the things I hate the most in games.

Still my most anticipated game for the rest of the year.

I would like to see more coverage of the exploration and puzzle solving aspects of the game, but then I guess the press hasn't seen much of that yet.

Not really, no. I guess they're bringing out the big guns in Croatia. I did get to play a section where you had to scale a wall, and that part was pretty tricky since the age old idea of crumbling sections returned.

I do believe it was and old build, but it felt very solid. I'll go ask the guys at Sony what build it was soon. Maybe that can clarify some things.

No and no.

The combat/cover is definitely not identical at all. Uncharted misses a few minor details that Gears nails, the most annoying being that Uncharted does that completely outdated and lame thing where the wide view and aim view are two separate angles. Meaning that in Gears, you can set up your shot while in cover and jump out and at least have the aiming reticule close to where you want to shoot, where in Uncharted you'll pop out of cover and be aiming somewhere completely different. I really thought this classic fuck-up would've been dead after Gears showed the world how to do it, but I guess not.

Also, you can only smoothly transition between cover objects if they're lined up sideways. No running around corners and crouch-running to the next one like in Gears. You may call these minor annoyances that are easily forgettable, but you can't go around saying it's "100% identical."

It's most definitely not a platformer with some shooty parts either. It's more like an RE with minor platforming or a Tomb Raider with less parkour.

How was the frame rate ?

Thanks for your impressions Vashu.

Didn't pay much attention to the frame-rate, but overal it was pretty stable. There was some screen-tearing, but Jak 2 and Jak 3 had the same, so I guess it's kind of an ND staple. Could be fixed in the final version, but seeing both Jak 2 and 3 still carried it slightly in their full versions I think there could be moments (although quite minimal) where you experience it.

I'll have to replay the game to see how the framerate is though, sorry.

Also, no problem at all. I like to share my thoughts and experiences to fellow gamers. It's why I write about games, and I don't care if that is in Dutch or in the English language.
