Gamestop announces strategic partnership with Microsoft

My imprecise words have really sent you in a spin. I said "can't win at retail" (implying the generalized retail market) "buy retail" (implying the purchase of retail inroads and channels). I didn't say buy a retailer. it's sad that I've had to cliff notes my own post for you twice in a row. Hopefully I won't have to do it yet again.

Please add in more cursewords. It makes it even funnier.
They didn't buy.. or purchase.. anything. It's not imprecise, you clearly had no clue what the news was about.

Done with your dumb shit, and yes I swear.. oh no.

So does this mean that MS get a share of profit from games and hardware that people buy from gamestop even if it Nintendo and Playstion sales seem like MS will be making money from their competitors sales.

So when you want to buy a PS5 game at Gamestop, you can't leave the store until the sales clerk has asked you whether you've already bought the more powerful Xbox and that it provides much more value than the PS5 became of Gamepass. "Gamepass has so many great games that you won't need to visit Gamestop stores anymore"

Held hostage. God damn it, MS.

Gamestop: we will give you 80% back for that xbox game.

also gamestop: sorry we don't accept sony games.

It sounds like ya'll are making this a lot bigger than what it is when it comes to changing the stores. Basically it is just a partnership to use Microsoft's software, services, and devices to run the stores. The only thing Xbox related is the implementation of Xbox All Access in the stores.

This is just a standard business partnership. However, seeing how so many people took the Sony partnership with Microsoft Azure, as if it was related to Xbox some how, this is not surprising reaction. Microsoft offers business solutions to many businesses, and it does not really have anything to do with their gaming division.

Wat. Phil Spencer chimed in. Why do people keep concluding it has nothing to do with Xbox?

It's Gamestop, a gaming retailer.

Phil Spencer, Microsoft, Executive Vice President of Gaming, added: "For many years GameStop has been a strong go-to-market partner for our gaming products, and we are excited about continuing and evolving that relationship for the launch of the Xbox Series X|S. GameStop's extensive store base, focus on digital transformation in an omni-channel environment and expert gamer associates remain an important part of our gaming ecosystem, and we're pleased to elevate our partnership."

WTF are you talking about? lol

This is about Gamestop adopting Azure/Microsoft products for their backend, and point of sale in store systems.

This literally has nothing to do with Gamestop changing anything they are selling, etc. It has nothing really to do with Xbox.

Microsoft as a company has a retail division that focuses on technology for retailers... this is that division selling Gamestop on their tech.

The same tech could be sold to a beauty supply store and you'd read the same news.

Literally nothing to do with turning Gamestop into Microsoft stores, or anything about selling Microsoft or Xbox products.

They mention the fact they already sell Xbox All Access in the PR.. but that paragraph isn't even the news here at all.
THIS MORONS. THIS

It is about Microsoft making inroads into retail space. I know what the news is about and I know Microsoft's history. I posted accordingly.

Other businesses use their software for retail already. I have a large client that I am currently in the planning stages of integrating their new eCommerce store with Microsoft Dynamics 365 (their ERP solution) and various other services, just like the partnership they just made with Gamestop.

Why there is a press release on this is due to the large size of Gamestop. It shows other companies what large businesses can use the system, encouraging the smaller guys to use it as well. It was probably a very large contract, but they still got a discount due to the visibility it gives Microsoft.

This is not about MS getting into retail to sell their products. This is simply a large business deal where Gamestop is now using MS' services throughout their entire infastructure.

Because of the visibility. This is a large press release to show how Dynamics and Microsoft's other services can be used on the enterprise level. I am actually in the planning stages a very similar setup for one of my clients who is using Microsoft's services for most of their business needs. They don't have a physical store, so no surface tablets for all the employees to use, but Dyanmics, Teams, and more is being setup for this client and I will be one of the main devs working on the integration. You won't see a press release about it, because it is a small business and not enterprise level like Gamestop. This release is about getting the buzz out there about Microsoft's services on a very large, enterprise level, business.

Why did Phil Spencer chime in (you ignored that) and why was Xbox All Access mentioned?

I seriously don't understand why people are downplaying the news. Feels weird. I came here to snark about Microsoft buying up retail inroads and instead I find myself having to explain one sentence at a time why this is more than a software/point of sale agreement.

No I did not ignore that, I addressed it an other comment. I didn't want to repeat myself. The only thing that was Xbox directly related is their partnership to offer Xbox All Access in the stores as well. Other retailers are already offering Xbox All Access (best buy, Walmart, Target..). This is nothing big. Just an extra bullet point to bring more attention to the press release.

I am not sure how old you are or what kind of job you do, but I am in this type of business. I make large eCommerce websites. I have seen press releases get put out with added fluff to make them look bigger (due to MS being publicly traded, they want to make everything look as good as possible.). So no, you are reading way too much into this. It is a standard business partnership.

It's a perfect fit really! Microsoft will embrace their model, extend it some and then extunguish the ever living crap out of it.

So does this mean that MS get a share of profit from games and hardware that people buy from gamestop even if it Nintendo and Playstion sales seem like MS will be making money from their competitors sales.

No. All this was is a business deal for Gamestop to use Microsoft's services. There might be some extra advertising (like their NFL deal), but is just a business deal. I set this stuff up for my clients....

You know that shit's going to happen, and if you sign up for the Power Pro or whatever the hell it's called, I bet it will eventually come with a GamePass discount or free month or so. Repeated to every, single, customer ad nauseum.
Oh no, the horror of customers getting a good deal.....

This just sounds like they're moving their back end services to Azure and probably going to be using surface devices etc in store. Nothing gaming related at all.

Edit: Yep, exactly that:

The partnership includes enterprise and commercial elements.
  • Under this agreement, GameStop will standardize its back-end and in-store solutions on Dynamics 365, Microsoft's portfolio of cloud-based business applications and customer data platform, empowering associates with integrated experiences across its business operations including finance, inventory, eCommerce, retail and point of sale. This will enable store associates the ability to access omni-channel insights about customer preferences and purchasing history, real time information on product availability, subscriptions, pricing, and promotions in order to provide a differentiated and personalized in-store customer experience.
  • Additionally, associates will be equipped with new Microsoft Surface devices that will transform the in-store experience and help unlock new retail experiences in the future. The mobility of Microsoft Surface will allow associates to move freely within the store footprint, meeting the needs of customers faster and more efficiently. Microsoft Surface devices have already been an important part of the digital modernization strategy for store management.
  • As part of its transformation, GameStop plans to roll out Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Teams to its stores, empowering more than 30,000 store associates with enhanced productivity and collaboration tools. With Teams, store associates will more easily be able to ask questions and share insights with one another, enabling them to provide a better customer experience. Associates will also benefit from enhanced security and identify management capabilities.

So MS not making money or Gamestop not making money from this deal i find that hard to believe.

If this is a way for MS to make some inroads to having a strong physical retail presence to push their own products, it's not like that's some bad or evil thing. They have the money to do it and it could be a major play.

"It's just a POS system." Eh, maybe. And maybe it automatically suggests add-ons like Xbox Live, prices the Xbox version of a game $5 cheaper than PS5, ect while the employee is walking around with Jimmy's mom or dad.

We have no idea what kind of deal they actually signed here or what Microsoft's long-term plans are here. IMO it's kinda naĂŻve to think that MS doesn't have a long-term plan with this deal and just wants to sell POS systems (not talking about the Series S, which is a different kind of POS system).

It's not. It's literally Gamestop moving their internal services over to microsoft services like azure and teams and dynamics and office 365. They literally say this in the press release lol.

Oh just saw the last little bit of your post in brackets...........yeah this isn't worth it.

Oh, it's in the short press release? I guess MS has no long-term plans with this, then. Because that would all be laid out in the press release :messenger_tears_of_joy: :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Thanks for the explanation, because the OP's quote was really confusing.

Gamestop doesn't have long term plans because they'll be out of business in the medium term.

We know exactly what this deal entails. It's laid out right there in the press release. If they were to do anything else in the future other than migrate Gamestops internal systems over to Azure then they'll do another press release at such time. This deal would not have even had a single thing to do with the Xbox department. This is an Azure thing.

But please, go on and make up more things, but that's literally all you'd be doing - making things up.

Have you ever stopped and thoght about what gaming is supposed to be about for people like you and me? Hint, it's the opposite of the horseshit that your're pushing.

What does that even mean?

Microsofts bread and butter, the overwhelmingly large majority of their business, is about cloud services and business services. This is just getting another big company with thousands of employees using their services, paying them ongoing revenue. This deal literally had nothing to do with "gaming".

it's not about the good deal you clown, it's the robotic annoyance I was commenting on more at that store has a reputation for.

Now would you like to sign up, you get a free subscription to Game Informer? Would you like to see our list of games to preorder?

I suppose it's best if we just agree that we're on two completely different wavelengths regarding the joys that gaming is supposed to bring us all.

There are a lot of ifs and maybes in my post that you took as me stating that this was happening and "making things up."

It's a discussion, dude. I find it all interesting. If MS was doing this as a longer term strategy of pushing their products through retail without having to actually open up a ton of their own stores, that would be interesting business.

I made that "if" really stand out for you so you understand I didn't just state that it was Microsoft's intention. Maybe I'll put out a press release, since you take those as gospel :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Microsoft products are already pushed through retail. You can buy Surface devices everywhere. You can buy Xbox devices everywhere. You can buy Office and Xbox subscriptions everywhere. How exactly would selling devices there be interesting business?

Not even sure what you're trying to say here. Talking about the joy that gaming is supposed to bring.....wtf?

I don't give a shit who "wins". I know the PS5 will handily outsell the Series X, it doesn't bother me in the slightest because I have no allegiance to multinational companies. I'll literally buy any product from any company if it offers something I want.

Tell me what that stupid loaded question has to do with this gamestop and microsoft partnership?

Have you ever seen a fox eat itself?

You make no sense man. They got into a business contact for their services. There is a press release due to how large of a business Gamestop is. MS is making money off of this, due to GameStop is buying a massive service contract to use MS Dynamics, Teams, and their other 365 services. Does anyone else on these boards work in the corporate world and know what these tools are?

lol I can't belive that I made you type all that nonsense!

So MS not making money or Gamestop not making money from this deal i find that hard to believe.

Gamestop is not making money from this, they are the ones buying MS' services. Any business can use these services, there is just a press release about this due to the size of GameStop.

MS is making $$$ off of this. My client who I am currently in the planning stages for Dynamics integration, pays a good amount for the service, and they are small time compared to GameStop.

o.....k........? Keep up the good work, I guess? I'll just go back to enjoying being able to buy both consoles without worrying about allegiances like you.

No no no no no - everything MS do is about XBOXXBOXXBOXXBOXXBOX!!!! Microsofts other divisions are small fry compared to Xbox! This is all the long game to get gamestop to sell xboxes in their stores! They're going to put some AI into Azure and all MS systems that when their POS systems try to ring up a Playstation it won't let them! It'll secretly ring them up an Xbox! They're so evil!
