Gamestop forcing warranty on used game sales?

Went to gamestop today to get Splatterhouse for the 360, which was $9.99, the reason I went there over ebay since they told me it was a complete copy (it wasn't).

But when ringing up, there was a $1.00 charge listed as "gbg". I asked her what this was, and she told me it was the new warranty program that is now included with all used games. They just haven't updated the prices yet. So instead of getting the choice to decline we are now forced to pay an extra dollar for a year of returns? Is this an actual new policy or were they lying to me to get their metrics up?

Update: manager called me, got a 10% discount. Not sure if the employee was let go or what.

I call bullshit.

Unless they can prove it's a new policy.

And even if it was, they could just include it in the base price? What's the point of putting a fee there.

Adding a "fee" to a purchase to make it more expensive just because is just dumb.

Yep, pushy salesperson hoping to trick some rubes instead of having to upsell the useless warranty.

Either that or someone gaming the system and hoping to pocket extra change.

Yup she's looking to get her numbers up. Up to you if you want to report her or not. Definitely not what she's supposed to do though.

Lying to you. I bought a game yesterday and they didn't force a warranty on me

Sometimes when you're not paying attention, the cashier will attempt to tack on more things onto your purchase and hope you don't notice.

Yeah that is her taking the "initiative". I think they have a quota to sell that crap on used games. I had a friend at ebgames who was the associate manager, she would push that shit hard on customers, even straight out telling the dude it's $70 you're getting the warranty. The guy complied completely, I think she had the highest warranty sales at that time.

Yeah just did the little survey giving them 0s across the board, told what happened and elected to be contacted.

And did the Google review because why not

Looks like that employee was forcing her monthly warranty targets on you by conveniently lying to you as a "new policy". You should have called GS customer support helpline right then and there.

Anyway, just avoid next paying time.

I can't imagine walking into a GameStop in 2016. Rough stuff.
I went to the other game store today for free comic book day. They didn't have what I wanted unfortunately. Think I might just look into Facebook groups.

It's 95% used games with no original boxes and an 8 foot wall of awful Funko Pop figures. They don't even have a magazine rack you can knock over anymore.

Hey I love funko pop!!

Yo, talk to there manager, she ain't supposed to be doing that. The manager will take care of you.

Well, that's okay. It's still an accurate description of Gamestop in 2016.

They are lying, call cooperate and blast them. When I worked there were were told to sell as many as we could(only ever did to parents who came in because their kids killed Minecraft fire the 5th time) so this guy was just trying to boost his numbers

The employee was trying to pull one over on you. Warranties are being pushed heavy by corporate right now so you're seeing someone cheating by lying to customers to boost their numbers.

This isn't Gamestop forcing you, the employee is being dishonest. Report him.

How do the survey things work? Does the manager get them and go over them or what

Goes directly to the District Manager.

I feel bad since I've been there before and she is a nice person but this was just so dirty. Made me even forget to ask for the darkrai code.

You're not a retired grandpa with nobody to talk to. She scammed you and you feel bad cause she's nice...?

The problem unfortunately, is that she's probably been doing this to many other people. While I understand the pressures from the boss can be overwhelming, stealing money from customers is never ok.

She had a lot of guts to lie to you as a customer. If gamestop was actually forcing warranty for used games, then they'd certainly go out of business.

As someone who used to work in sales, I know the feeling when management breathes down your neck to get you to sell those warranties or plans. She must be really desperate (or simply arrogant) to do that to you, and I feel kinda sorry for her.

It's definitely unethical business, and she might lose her job or get her hours reduced if you report it in the customer survey.

Yeah I did report it in the customer survey. As nice as she had been before this was just unacceptable. I'd rather have the bro Douche cashier over the lying lady cashier anyday.

Yep this is BS. When I used to work at GameStop they had the 3 dollar gpg, and my coworker used to ring it up and tell the customer 'oh that pops up automatically, I can take it off' if they ask about it.

Just makes you wonder how long she's been doing this to customers that don't take a good and hard look at what they're paying for.

Gamestop employees try a lot of sleezy tactics to meet certain quotas. It's pretty shitty that they have to deal with arbitrary goals like selling X warranties, but what she did was wrong. I always keep my eye on them and have outright left their store multiple times during an order. Especially when they try to used/new game bullshit. Walmart/Bestbuy likes money too.

You got got.

It happened to me too, I try to look at my receipt every time I buy or trade there. They like to sneak those warranties or "refurb fees" on if you don't pay attention.

It's a real pain in the ass too because I had gone to do grocery shopping in the same Plaza before noticing and had to drive back and go into the store to have it fixed.

I wonder if them doing this would be grounds for a chargeback on your credit card. See how they like that.

I don't buy there a lot but they have been a pretty good place to pick up ps3/360 games now that they are cheap. I've been trying to get the ones that didn't get pc versions last gen that are halfway decent games that I missed.

The only time I've willingly gotten the warranty is when the cashier went the extra mile for me. They had a trade in promo that one of the stores wasn't doing properly, and when I told her, she told me to go back there, get all my traded games back, then go to her and she would process it properly. She'd called them (it was another EBGames) to make sure things were right, but they refused, so that's the option she gave me. Every other time, I've refused. Also gave her a glowing review on the survey as well.

Well, refurb fees are just placed on games you traded in that look like shit. It's not charging you, simply taking off the value of your trade. Those get shipped back to the warehouse to get fixed.

Exactly what I've been doing too

I could see a dishonest young attractive female employee pulling something like this on teens and younger men who might not want to confront her on it or might be more likely to take her word.

The stereotype is that gamestop shopper would be an awkward teen male anyway right?

Yeah but they like to add them on at their discretion. I do flip games occasionally and had some try to add it on for a disc brand new out of shrink wrap. They didn't know that but once I pointed out the condition they claimed it was a mistake..

There isn't any benefit for them doing this on purpose. It would be better to just take it in without to sell it directly. The store would get more profit from selling it themselves rather than send it to the warehouse.

It's not a policy, and she will get fired by the end of the week if you report it. Likely the whole store, too, as shes not doing something like that without everyone else seeing those numbers. They're probably all doing it at that location.
