GameTrailers Countdown: Top 10 3DS games

Own every game in the top 10 except EO4 and Animal Crossing, both are glaring spaces in my 3DS line up. I also have almost every game people in this thread have said should be in the top 10. (Kid Icarus, KH3D, Monster Hunter, etc) I own a lot of 3DS games, and I don't regret it at all. Amazing handheld. Wish I could afford to upgrade to an XL for the comfort of my giant hands.

Gametrailers list might not be perfect, but it's better than I expected and I can agree with a lot of choices.

Personally my issues with that game go well beyond the (still bad) controls.
 
Etrian Odyssey definitely needs to be a lot higher than SMT IV.

Do people really enjoy Pokemon X/Y? For me it's one of the worst Pokemon games I've ever played. Everything is dull and easy.
 
Glad to see Kid Icarus isn't on there. I was expecting it to show up, and I was expecting the outcry when I saw it didn't, but I'm not of the opinion that it deserves a spot in the top 10.

I can agree with you that regardless what you think about the game, its merits should be recognized. Thing is though, I always find "top lists" problematic, especially when it's made up of a group of people voting. As critics, I think you should be able to step back and divorce your own personal feelings/emotions when it comes to analyzing where a game sits among its peers. Where it sits against its medium/genre etc.

I wasn't trying to suggest that Icarus is a bad game, I love it too. However, I've seen people either love or hate the game. GAF is the first place I've seen everyone love it. So since this was a list made up of a group of people, it doesn't surprise me that it didn't crack the top 10 for them. But critically, do I think the list SHOULD have it? Probably. It's one of the most noteworthy games in the 3DS library. I guess I just have trouble taking lists like this seriously in general, due to how they are voted on and are approached.
 
More recent games probably get a mindshare bonus, along with the ever present titles like Mario games.


But woww, so many RPGs. Maybe 3DS doesn't get enough credit as an RPG system sometimes.

And that's not even including big titles like:
Sticker Star
Dream Team
KH DDD

because you should be able to differentiate between your personal opinion about such controls and the objective quality of the game. Saying the controls suck, are bad/terrible is wrong, since there's obviously a large number of people who enjoyed them. Saying they aren't comfortable to you is correct. Looking at the list, I realise how much I miss Metroid on 3DS. Bought Fusion for WiiU lately and hotdamn that game is still freakin' awesome. My left kidney for a sequel.

It's top 10 of what games the gametrailers staff find to be the best on the system. Their opinion. Objectivity has no basis here, and no one can objectively say the game play is good or bad. There's also plenty of people who didn't enjoy them. You can base such a statistic on critical or user consensus but it's all still irrelevant when we're talking about GameTrailer's top 10.

Don't be angry because a game you like didn't get in. I said you were being ridiculous, because you are, especially for calling people trolls.

Outside of Mario Kart and Mario 3D Land, those are all RPG's or variations-though agreed, I wouldn't consider Luigi's Mansion an "RPG" but there are certainly elements of it in its online mode. The rest of the list is RPG (RPG/Sim for AC).
 
Yeah No Kid Icarus is stupid. My top 5 would be along the lines of

5. Fire Emblem: Awakening
4. Ace Attorney: DD
3. Zelda: ALBW
2. Zelda: OoT 3D
1. Kid Icarus: Uprising

And then there would be about 10 games very close to eachother fighting for spots 6-10.

such a dumb argument coming from you, it really surprises me. No one cant say that a game is objectively good or bad? While I agree discussing a site's chart is fairly pointless, there are certain criteria in every medium, and objectivity has a place in it because of them. You can disagree with them by stating your subjective opinion.You're being ridiculous here i'm afraid, but maybe it's best for the thread if we just agree to disagree and quit it here

If anything, it deserves a spot for being the only wholly new and 3DS exclusive series. Every single game on their list is a direct sequel to another game, often with only marginally different gameplay. For me it defines the 3DS like Mario 64 defined the 64.

Any other system and I'd probably agree, but literally every single game on the system is physically painful to play for me. The 3DS is the worst (ergonomicaly) designed system ever. Might as well get carpal tunnel playing the best.

Just bought a black 3ds XL and wasn't even considering Kid Icarus due to the complaints about the controls.

Now this thread is making me think I should pick it up.
 
I wouldn't put XY on the list. The online features are great but the main story is so boring and easy (even by Pokemon standards) and it suffers from that same "lets take out all the fun stuff and save it for the 3rd version" crap that happens to every game starting a new gen of Pokemon.

This doesn't make sense. OOT 3D is the best version of OOT hands down.
 
The list is pretty good, seeing Etrian Odyssey IV(even if it should be #1) there makes me really happy, but...

I'd take out Luigi's Mansion and Bravely Default and add Kid Icarus and AA5 instead.

I really have hard time to describe the main SMT as completely amoral
Specially when the worst ending of SMTIV is pretty much that
and more like grey vs gray. Not mention that there instances in the games were, regardless of alingnment, something is consider horrendus for all parties.
 
It's not even that the controls are physically painful in Kid Icarus (hand cramps are abundant in MK7 as well). It's the fact that the controls, not camera which takes getting use to, aren't very good in many situations. Dash controls were constant causes of deaths when pseudo-platforming, and vehicle controls were downright terrible (I've never heard someone say they enjoyed the vehicles in KI). The dash controls, where sometimes the slightest nudge while walking on a very narrow or floating platform sent you into a death throw over the ledge, caused my difficulty meter to drop quite a few times, making the game too easy when I finally got into a combat situation. I understand the difficulty meter dropping due to combat, but having it drop due to poorly executed and accidental run-off the ledge deaths was the most frustrating. A couple of other systems could have been more fleshed out as well such as a checkpoint system between air and ground missions; often times I would get done with an air mission and have to be somewhere, and I'm not one for the battery draining sleep mode.

I can't comment on the online portion of the game because competitive online aren't features I enjoy in videogames, but based on my frustrating experience with controls - not hand cramps but controls - I'd give it a 6.5-7.0 range. The personality, variety, customization, and colorful atmosphere saved it from being an extremely mediocre title.

Still, a fantastic 3ds game.
Why worst version? The controls and action were fine, single player is fun, I imagine multiplayer would be as great as wii u's.

I mean that the game itself isn't portraying a moral for you to follow. Most RPGs have some kind of theme like that. SMTIV has God vs. demons, and each has their own perspective. You can choose which perspective fits your own outlook the most, but neither one is embraced by the game as the "right" choice. Maybe if I got all of the endings I would find myself to be wrong, though.

I think Zelda is fair to call Action/RPG, AC a sim. My point was more the fact that RPG's were certainly on the list and essentially the majority...it wasn't 8 platformers and SMT IV/Zelda, on the list, etc.

Absolutely not. If somebody buys a 3DS today they'll want a top 10 list today, not near the end of the system's life cycle.
