GameTrailers Countdown: Top 10 Demos

Wait, they open the video with Bravely Default music, but don't include Bravely Default in the list? That game had a fantastic demo.

This and all its variants deserve a mention too.

I find the lack of BioShock and Resident Evil 4/5 disturbing, I know both of those ended up being tremendous success to making the game's do so well.

P.T. is another one, come to think of it. Though I may understand as what it's a demo too isn't out yet.

My favorite demo ever will always be Team Buddies.
Neither I nor my friends ever got the full game, but we would always play the demo.

Even in that 1 level, we had hours upon hours.

Played the shit out of the pro skater demo.

I saw that.

That PT snub though. I also remember being really excited for that God of War III demo. Slicing a centaur open and seeing his insides spill out had me all exciting. (sounds really crazy)

I'd put skate. on there. Fantastic demo.

Dead Rising is a great choice, had so much fun with the demo so I rented it and didn't dig it at all.

No love for the Stanley Parable demo? That was brilliant. Demonstrated exactly how the game would be without showing you any of the actual game

I remember Sages back on NSider or maybe it was people who were in Camp Hyrule, they got the demo for Resident Evil 4. It was supposed to be amazing. I was super jealous of those people.

The Battlefield 1942 Wake Island demo should be on there. The game was truly revolutionary and I believe there are people still playing that demo. It was fucking awesome

should be number 1

Great to see MGS2 on there, and at numero uno no less. After playing that demo at a friends house, I no longer "wanted" a PS2... I needed one.

THPS is also another great choice. My brothers and I played the SHIT out of that demo. The only other two games (full games, not a demo!) that we spent that much time playing together was SSX Tricky and Streets of Rage.

Bioshock is an enormous oversight. It's hard to imagine now, but the hype leading up to Bioshock wasn't really that huge. Until the demo hit, then everyone knew what was coming.

I thought the Doom shareware version was the full game for the longest time

Those shareware discs you'd get with CD-Rom drives were insanely good

There was a...I want to say Capcom vs. SNK demo that was just the entire game, but missing one or two modes.

It was probably the most value-packed demo of all time.

Really surprised Bioshock isn't there. Regardless of how I feel about the game, that demo grabbed me right by the balls from the start.

Dead Rising being there is nice, I have some great memories in searching every inch of that place.

Saw Stanley Parable in the youtube comments and ITT, which is a big one, for sure.

I think God of War 1's demo was a bigger deal and a better sell than GoW3's. The demo was so amazing, off the jampack disc. I turned it off, left the house and immediately went back out to buy it from the Target I had just gotten the demo from. It sold the franchise... GoW3 sold something that already sold itself. imo, screens of GoW1 looked kind of dumb, but playing it for barely a half hour blew my fucking mind. Today is GoW3 day, so maybe that's part of the motivation for choosing it.

They should have also mentioned that the Final Fantasy VIII demo had a music track in it that later went unused in the final release, because it turned out to be strikingly similar to the theme from the movie "The Rock" - it was another thing that made that demo a point of interest at the time. It's one of the first things I remember talking about on video game message boards in '99. Honestly, the FFVII demo was a bigger deal, either way. It didn't even need a demo to go with it's hype, but it sold Tobal No 1 the way MGS2 sold ZOE.

I also think talk about the bait and switch for western coverage of MGS2 should be in this video as a big reason why that demo is so important... otherwise, it could just as easily be the demo for MGS1 in that spot.

Uh, guys, PT isn't a demo. A demo is a sample of an actual game. PT is more like an ARG advertisement.

What's missing from the list, though is Metroid Prime 2.

Uhhhh, the Quake demo had every ID software title locked away on the disc (which some people unscrupulously unlocked with a key-gen, not me though)

Anyway, Quake demo was fucking rad but it's missing from this list.

Soul Reaver's demo on PS1 was pretty great imo. The amount of things you could do in the demo, variety of enemy dispatches, showing off the streaming loading and dimension shifting... it was hot.
