Gametrailers Countdown: Top 10 Most Difficult Games

Metal Storm is a great game but it's not that hard.

Truth. I had no problem with Ninja Gaiden (NES or Xbox) but Siren? Fuck.

Siren is a tough game but it's not unbeatable or anything. Most of the problems I ran into are due to poor design decisions.

I'll also go on record and say that Shinobi isn't as bad as I thought it would be.

milon's secret castle? or maybe that's only my crappy memory.

Hard game, but easier than I remembered when I played it again semi-recently.

Warning: The first stage of Ikaruga(which I assume is included in the trial) really isn't that hard. The game doesn't really pick up until stage 3.
:lol Now that just makes me feel bad, I just played it for about 10 minutes and got my ass handed to me by the first stage. I'm usually shitty at those types of games though.

That list is pure videogaming cruelty

I want to make some honorable mentions

  • Megaman
  • GT 3
  • TMNT
  • Viewtiful Joe
  • Super Monkey Ball

dmc3?it wasnt that easy but in the top 10 most difficult of all time?never

chaos legion was alot harder
They broke the difficulty for the US version. Even 'Normal' was insanely hard. I guess reviewers just didn't feel obligated to beat Chaos Legion before giving it a score.

Not a bad list. Should have had the first Super Monkey Ball in there though. It's certainly much harder than just about everything on that list, including all the Ghosts n Goblins games, which I have beaten.

What was the deal with the Portal clip in the intro? That had me scratching my head, because the game surely couldn't come close to ever being anything even approaching something that might resemble an entry on a "top 10 most difficult games" list.

Probably just to show off the challenge aspect. They had stuff from easy sections of teh mario games too.

Did anyone actually beat shinobi (PS2)?

A handful. It's funny too, the game is already impossible from 3B down but it just gets harder and harder until the last boss which you basically have to just luck out to win..and thats after like 45 minute fight. Why would anyone make an entire level without a floor? So fucking wrong. Couple that with a sword that eats health if you don't kill and you've got a game that caused me to beat my ps2 controller over my knee.

That part made me want to kill my friends numerous times.

Let's see:

10. Contra (NES)
Can finish easily.

9. Zelda 2 Adventure of Link (NES)
Gave up on.

8. Castlevania (NES)
Only played the original once or twice. Gave up on Castlevania 2 & 3.

7. Devil May Cry 3 (PS2)
Gave up on.

6. Shinobi (PS2)
Skipped.

5. Ikaruga (GC, XBLA)
Only played a bit.

4. F-Zero GX (GC)
Gave up on.

3. The Ninja Gaiden Series
Gave up on all 3 NES games.

2. The Ghouls & Ghosts Series
Only played a little, gave up on all of them pretty much instantly.

1. Battletoads (NES)
Really tried to finish, but gave up on in the end. And Stage 3 isn't the hard part. It's that level when you have to hang onto that unicycle thing while the ball chases you. I could NEVER get that timing down.

Yup, I'm weak.

Doesn't matter if it was Battletoads for NES, Battle Toads and Double Dragon, Battle Toads on SNES

I COULD NEVER FUCKING BEAT THOSE STUPID RACING LEVELS

#2#?#@?@?$!@?#?@!#?@!?

I can't believe this isn't mentioned.

dragon%27s_lair.gif

To be honest, that game is even harder than Battletoads. Heck, I've gotten to like the 2nd last level in Battletoads. I CAN'T GET THROUGH THE FIRST 2 SCREENS IN DRAGON'S LAIR.

Quite the list. Beat every one outside of Devil May Cry 3 and Shinobi. Took a sleepover/weekend taking turns with 2 friends to beat Battletoads back in the day.

About The 7th Saga, yeah, fuck spiders, fuck poison, and fuck the difficulty level, especially the undead deer, casters in general. ;)

During my masochist days, I did however conquer the game via the cleric and got lucky and partnered up with the mage, and eventually maxed out my lvls (99). Suffice to say, the end boss went splat in 2 hits.

I remember the original Wizardry for the NES. My god what an unforgivable, unmapped, frustrating, yet, fed my masochist completest needs quite nicely game. ;)

They said they won't include games that are just broken, only games that are challenging by design. And Dragon's Lair NES is fucking broken.

Chuck Zelda II off that list and replace it with:

Super-Mario-Bros--The-Lost-Levels-2.jpg

Aka Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels.

No continues, backward warpzones, wind-timed jumps, koopa-bouncing to cover huge gaps, a game that is simply, just ridiculous.

I'm talking about the NES original here, not the easier SNES port.

It may not be the hardest ever (and god knows I've not played most of that list), but its a damn sight harder than Zelda II.

You could continue from the start of each world. You could do that in the original SMB too, but SMB2 doesn't require a code/trick to do it.

Battletoads is one of the hardest games of all time,

but it is definitely NOT harder than Ghouls n Ghosts series...

u kno what makes GnG hard?? the enemies do not follow a pattern, everything is random.

there are stages where ghosts appear out of nowhere and move across the screen, sometimes if you're unlucky a ghost will spawn right as you're running... THAT is cheap.

another random thing is say you gotta go up or down a ladder but there's an enemy on the ledge u need to get to, that enemy will NOT get out of your way unless u get lucky... it will just randomly move around however it likes and if you decide to get on the ladder at the wrong time it's like BAM you're dead...

Rlan said:
I also wanna say that anybody who posts this image as an example of battletaods' difficulty has not even seen how hard the game can get.

This is only the 3rd stage, and it's EASY. There are much worse stages than this, believe it.

lastly Devil May Cry 3 should be off the list... replaced with this:

250px-Chakan_cover.jpg

Lemme take a crack at it:

10. Contra (NES)
Can finish w/out the 30 live trick.

9. Zelda 2 Adventure of Link (NES)
Easy game, don't know what they're smoking.

8. Castlevania (NES)
Finished all the Castlevania's with ease. I'm still trying to finish the Metroidvania's though.

7. Devil May Cry 3 (PS2)
haven't played it yet.

6. Shinobi (PS2)
Made it to the 4th level, but stopped due to awesomeness that is Ninja Gaiden on Xbox. I'll come back eventually and finish it.

5. Ikaruga (GC, XBLA)
Demands alot of patience, but I finished it.

4. F-Zero GX (GC)
Never played it.

3. The Ninja Gaiden Series
Finished 1 and 2 on NES, but never played 3. and finished all the Xbox NG games.

2. The Ghouls & Ghosts Series
Finished 1 and 2 (SNES version). Never finished the Genesis version or the maximo series

1. Battletoads (NES)
Made it to the end of the game with my cousins. This game wasn't hard. If you've played alot of Double Dragon and TMNT arcade games, this game was rather just as difficult but beatable.

SenseiJinx said:
I dunno, I didn't find the Lost Levels extremely difficult. For me it was just the way they would throw crazy new situations at you.
I didn't find it unreasonably difficult either. In fact, once you spend a few hours with it, it feels just as second nature as the original SMB. Definitely my favorite 2D Mario.

oh god, i must admit i never ever made it past the speedbike stage. could get there blindfold with one hand behind the back but not ever make it past.

perhaps it didn't help that i only rented the game and whenever i got too pissed off i'd march down the video store and angrily return it :lol

i'm all for difficulty but i just had no patience with that game

I think Trauma Center (only played the 1st on DS) deserves a spot. I've beaten it, but it's a very frustrating game and I never figured out the secret to the Triti missions, just HT Blitzed.

No Silver Surfer? Its not difficult to broken mechanics or bugs, just very unforgiving, and making the Surfer more fragile than...well, just about any hero in a game ever. A rubber duck kills you, if your board touches it. The Power Cosmic is no match for a child's bath tub toy.

Contra (NES) shouldn't be on that list.

if they said Contra Series, yeah, but the NES Contra was easy.

Castlevania is also not that hard, i mean for this list anyway.

Zelda 2? really?

8. Castlevania (NES)
7. Devil May Cry 3 (PS2)

5. Ikaruga (GC, XBLA)
4. F-Zero GX (GC)
3. The Ninja Gaiden Series
2. The Ghouls & Ghosts Series
1. Battletoads (NES)

I fail because I've not played any of these games except for a little bit of Contra on XBLA. :/

Gametrailers Countdown: Top 10 Most Difficult Games For The Pussy Generation

Shinobi PS2 has a special place in my library as the game I like but have played very little because I can't progress far into it.

I still remember a Nintendo Power magazine from 20 years ago which listed Castlevania as one of the Top 10 Most Beaten NES games. Seriously.

Zelda 2 is not difficult by any interpretation of the word.

NES Contra is a walk in the park and there is not one single rhythm game listed. "Both are nothing but pure memorization", you're saying - but if you don't have the physical dexterity for Beatmania IIDX, all the memorization in your lifetime isn't going to get you to pass anything on it.

Ikaruga's token inclusion as the only arcade shooter ices this cake.

This list simply shows a total lack of knowledge and research into what actual difficult games are - which I guess should be expected of any person or group of people who would find Zelda 2 to be difficult.

Nah that games really not bad at all.

As for Battletoads, seriously the hype about lvl 3... I just don't get it. I there another part where you have to jump over the walls? Or is that it, because that part is no problem for me, even when I was a kid.

These guys merely grazed the shmup genre.

Zelda II isn't punishing so much as it has a few blemishes here and there. It certainly is challenging, but a lot of people find it frustrating because they apparently don't get a handle on the combat.

At least it was deservedly outranked by the likes of the G'n'G series. Now those, with their swarms of enemies from ground and mid-air alike, and a character with very little jump control, are the definition of punishing.

There are more race sequences and a level where you have to run from giant gears, all are fuck-all hard. The gear level is near the end and I knew it when I was playing it as a kid, but still never beat it.

And DMC3 non-SE is really god damn tough, mostly because of how much you have to repeat stuff if you fail.

For the Dreamcast? Hell yeah. Hanging Waters in that game was absolutely brutal.

I was thinking more of the original Genesis game. The Machine.

Ikaruga... hard? really?

take that game off the list, its EASY...
damn battletoads... never beat it, got pretty far though.

zelda 2? really? _really_?

there are plenty of games i had way more problems with. Ghosts'n'Goblins, my first NES game, almost turned me off of gaming forever.

QFT.

I mean, I beat super contra through and through without loosing any life as a kid. It wasn't that easy, but I don't remember it as being that hard. (Part of that was that I didn't have any good games for a month or two)

I've beaten DMC3 on every possible level if difficulty a few years back :P

Oh, and when I got Battletoads at some points in time, I played it until I beat the damn game. For me, the worst was the part where you had to jump those snakes. I fell so many many times it wasn;'t even funny. And the shitty part is this: 've found out about the warps only after I've beaten the game. Tough luck, eh?

I'd probably break my fingers from trying to beat the stupid battletoads today, but give me contra any day, any time :D
