Gametrailers: Top 10 Sega Dreamcast Games

Other than]Shenmue it's a pretty good list.

I really wish we would get more game with that "Dreamcast" feel. I think it's one of the reasons I like Platinum Games so much

Power Stone > Power Stone 2

And I really like Virtua Tennis, but replace it with Crazy Taxi or NFL2K.

It's sad to see a game like Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 not appear in the list when they felt so ground breaking at the time. They are simply games that aged like shit.

Illbleed is the Dreamcast's Deadly Premonition.

If we are to compare Nishigaki's work to SWERY I'd actually say Illbleed is closer to D4. It's a highly experimental, weird game with a non-traditional gameplay structure. Most of the time anyway. Blue Stinger would be closer to Spy Fiction, a more or less by the books example of its genre that tries to do something different, but really ends up hamstringed by a rigid adherence to a formula along with a lot of curiously bad design decisions.

I don't really think Nishigaki ever got to make his Deadly Premonition, which is a real shame. If the man had a magnum opus it was probably Illbleed, which wasn't exactly the best note to go out on.

Now, if we are just talking about "punk", genre bending weird games I guess it's a fair comparison but the Dreamcast was absolutely LITTERED with games like that. Hell I'd even argue that Shenmue is in a similar vein, and not just because they are both open-world exploration games.

I'd have Skies at #1, but it's a decent list. No Rush 2049 is pretty criminal though. I'd also have Sonic Adventure on my list aswell.

Power Stone > Power Stone 2

And I really like Virtua Tennis, but replace it with Crazy Taxi or NFL2K.

I actually agree. Everyone has this huge hard on for Power Stone 2 but the first game just felt a lot more like an actual cohesive fighting game rather than just a big messy party game. I liked how all the characters had their own unique stages and theme songs and there was a bit more variety in the actual fighting mechanics, even if there were fewer items and more down-to-earth scenarios.

Power Stone 2 is to Power Stone what MvC2 was to Marvel vs. Capcom, basically.

No Sonic Adventure 1 & 2, Jet Set Radio, MSR, Crazy Taxi, SEGA Rally, Daytona USA 2001, Rush 2049 or Rayman 2?

Not even gonna take this list seriously

I'd drop Code Veronica and Virtua Tennis (even though I freaking LOVE Virtua Tennis) for Jet Set Radio and SF3: 3rd Strike. That said I appreciate the variety of the list and that they didn't just go for low hanging fruit like Sonic. Shenmue isn't that game I'd personally pick for number 1 but, all things considered, it probably is one of "crown jewels" of the system's library and a huge bulletin point in the system's, Yu Suzuki's, and SEGA's, history.

Other honorary games I feel SHOULD be on a list somewhere are NFL 2k2 (still one of the best American Football games ever made), Crazy Taxi, Rayman 2, Capcom vs. SNK 2, Soul Reaver, Typing of the Dead, Project Justice, and Seaman (it sucked, but MAN it was memorable).

This post said everything I was thinking of saying when I saw the OP. Glad to scroll down and see other people with a finely tuned sense of taste - especially with the bolded.

No one will ever give a fuck about Super Magnetic Neo.

No one.

It's a solid list. It doesn't have some of my favorites like 3rd Strike, JGR or Rez, but you can't please anyone. The Dreamcast really was a super pleasant moment in gaming. To date still the most "next-gen experience" I've had with a new console.

I would have taken out Soul Calibur and MvC2 as I'm not into fighter even though I recognize their quality and replace them with NBA2k2 and Jet Grind Radio. But otherwise a fantastic list of great games.

This list is either super wrong, or they desperately need a top 20 for this. JGR and Crazy Taxi not being here are just bananas to me.

I will never understand what people saw in Virtua Tennis. Its inclusion here with some truly classic Dreamcast titles completely absent from the list just sort of rubs that in.

Pretty solid list for the most part. Shenmue bored me to tears but I know I'm in the minority so I understand it's spot. I probably would've put one of the sonic adventure games on the list. I know they haven't aged well but I really enjoyed them at the time. Other than that the list is good though maybe not in the same order I would put them.

Shenmue 2 should be #2

Also needs some Toy commander, Rez, MDK2, Samba De Amigo and 2K sports love. Get rid of Code Veronica and Tony Hawk.

Guess they can only put 1 Shenmue but 2 >>> 1

Edit:Very good list though, I owned 7/10 of these games, man if I ever found a working Dreamcast around, I'll play them again.

I'm just worried they may not work anymore since it been more than 10 years and I haven't payed much attention to them. How long do these CD's usually last?

Good to see all the Shenmue hate in this thread. Never understood the appeal of that game.

amazing for its time. like seriously amazing.

now it's just the average game, with shit tank controls. Yakuza is the true successor to shenmue, i'd like to think that if shenmue 3 came out it would control like yakuza series rather than the original shenmue.

I'd get rid of Code Vern for sure. Shenmue is too unique to not include on a system lacking many exclusive gems, so I'd keep it.

RE2 should be on there in the 10 spot in replace Code Vern because the Dreamcast ver is the only console ver of an otherwise exclusive Japanese Windows PC release that had exclusive bonuses and such, and it's a better game.

Jet Set Radio def needs to be on there. Illbleed should probably be on there.

PSO should be number 1 for sure.

I'm a little stunted and torn about the rest. I don't think multiplats should be on there unless they've got exclusive quirks. DC had the last and best of the Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 vers before Xbox's THPS2X, which is most certainly better, but also different. Seaman should probably be on there.

Holy crap, I don't remember Virtua Tennis looking so much like used soaked toilet paper.

And I don't even remember Grandia 2 being on Dreamcast at all.

Limiting any console's library to a top 10 is going to be a cause for debate, but limiting the Dreamcast's is an exercise in futility,

Crazy Taxi is my favourite game ever. I've said it before and I still stand by it. Whether on PC, the 360 port or the definitive Dreamcast / Arcade version, I can play that game forever. Desert island with only one game, it's Crazy Taxi.

EDIT:
Got to live up to my Shenmue Defense Force avatar and say that anyone who doesn't like Shenmue is crazy.
Nah, if you don't like Shenmue, I understand. Even at the time I didn't like how Ryo controlled. But once you look past that and live in that world for days and weeks of virtual time it manages to leave an impression on you that no other game can rival. The love for the game is real and it is totally deserving of it. Kind of hard to see it in 2015 vs 2000, but if you look hard enough you can see why people still want Shenmue III.

Headhunter rocks, too.

I'd replace tony Hawks pro skater (great game but availible on everything else) with sonic adventure 2, which fixed mostly all of sonic adventures issues. But man I remember being blown away by sonic adventure the first time I played it

Echoing the "first Power Stone is better" feeling. The sequel expanded in ways it shouldn't, IMO. Fixed arenas and only two players make things way more enjoyable.
