GameTrailers Top 10 Worst Final Fantasy Games

A simple question for the FF XIII defense force in this thread..

did it ever come to your mind that 8.6 is pretty bad for Final Fantasy standards and that's why this game is on this list?
i wouldnt even give 8.6 to FFXIII (on the other hand i would give 8.6 to chocobos dungeon. but hey i like roguelikes) because of its flaws.. however there are some moments in the game that really make it shine (for example the battle system which is absolutely superb.)

Actual worst FF games list:

10. Final Fantasy 2
9. Final Fantasy 1
8. Final Fantasy Legend II
7. Final Fantasy VII: Dirge of Cerberus
6. Final Fantasy XIV Version 1
5. Final Fantasy Crystal Bearers
4. Final Fantasy XIII-2
3. Final Fantasy XIII
2. Final Fantasy X2
1. Final Fantasy VIII

Gametrailers has no balls.

Actual NeoGAFfers With Worst Taste List:

1. Vire

sorry, man

Dirge of Cerberus isn't that bad, either. It's an average action game. There's nothing offensively bad about it, it's just unremarkable.

When you consider the typical game review scale only runs from 7.0 to 10.0 (outside of games that are ridiculously, terribly broken) an 8.6 for something with the production values of FF13 is pretty damn awful. That's basically "the game is gorgeous, but everything else is questionable."

Can't believe trash like FF13 has so many defenders. The game is garbage and single handedly responsible for the destruction of the FF brand and pedigree.

before 13 you knew no matter what if you bought a mainline FF it was going to be amazing, instead we got this turd. And then 2 more follow up poops. Kitase diarrhea didn't end.

even though 12 is not my favorite I cannot believe its been that long since SE gave us a FF that was amazing. Barring 14 2.0

13 should be number 1 on that list. Aside from music and graphics everything else was pure garbage. The worst characters and story of any FF game. Aside from lighting I can't even remember any if their names or anything about them except the black guy has an afro.

on top of that the amount of cringe worthy stuff in this game, I was actually embarrassed t play this game in front of anyone. And the battle system while have some good ideas was crap as well since it was neither here or there. Why couldn't they just make it proper turn based or atb? Even something like FFX would have been good.

Anybody putting VIII in their lists...

SMH.. I would KILL to have another Final Fantasy like that again.

Sure, most didn't care for the story, or the junction system, but the game was still very competent, complex, and compelling enough to enjoy. Now we get games like XIII. I've never been more disappointed in my life in regards to gaming.

Even more surprising is how long it took them to release it. And when they do, it's one of the most linear games I've played outside of a Call of Duty.

And yeah, the battle system was TERRIBLE. Repeatedly mashing the A button, instead of strategically picking commands that suit the situation, the horrible STAGGER system was a chore, and the worst part being, that if lightning goes down, it's game over. WHAT THE FUCK. Makes zero sense to me.

List seems fine but mine would be different. I think II is really good but understand why some people may not like the leveling system in place.

I probably wouldn't include the Saga game because that's a different franchise to me but whatever.

Maybe it's just personal preference, but when I look at these games it boggles my mind that Final Fantasy III isn't on the list. I thought that game was awful. I tried a translated copy of the original Famicom version via emulator and hated it. And then I got the DS remake and hated it all over again.

There are more than 10 FF games before XIII that have either received lower scores or would today if reviewed by today's standards (i.e games like VIII (which is one of my favorite games of all time mind you) or X would have been more criticized nowadays, especially with the internet).

Horribad list

XIII isn't high enough, VIII is missing, chocobo dungeon shouldn't be on there, only the original crystal chronicles should be on there not its sequels, legends shouldn't be therr either, and XIV 1.0 should have been number 1 for being an unplayable mess over atb which is still functional and mindlessly fun
What ? FFCC is a beautifull game with stellar soundtrack and a good story if you reach the end ( because the pay-off of all those memories are at the end of the journey ).
It's only problem is the barrier of entry that is very high.BUT it's very far from being the worst . the game works flawlessly and made several spin-off on his universe , reason why it cannot be in a worst list .. totally different from a game that you cannot finish because the ai, the platforming and battle are broken.

8.6 is never "bad" for a game .. it is not even close to the horrible release that is final fantasy legends or "for the greatest" ..it's a game that works , not buggy with a start and a end... it has character issues , balance issue , pacing issues writting issues all together but it's still a working game. Heck the same reason why some people don't agree with ff2 are valid for ff13. ( they are games that tried and failed on some parts but they are nowhere close from being "worst" )

I rather enjoyed III on the DS. I don't think I completed it though. That final dungeon was frustratingly difficult IIRC.

Well, are there 10 offensively bad FF games?

I like DoC but I'll admit it'd probably make my top 10 worst final fantasy games. If I had to say imo the 10 worst they'd be (no order)

XIV 1.0
VIII
II
IV GBA port
XIII
ATB
Crystal Chronicles GC
VI iOS port
X-2
DoC

IV gba port had horrible bugs and lag because it was based upon the wonderswan port so despite the cool new features it had it was a mess to play. VI ios also gets a nod not only for butchering the graphics of a classic but also for its new new translation with typos like espiers seriously how do you misspell the main story thing of your series?

X-2 gets a nod for its stupid story but would be at the bottom due to excellent gameplay. All the CC games have problems, but the original on the GC had the awful crystal chalice miasma mechanic which ruined multiplayer (games main draw) and slowed the pace down in single player.

Decent list. That fecal matter called ATB deserves to be plopped at number 1 and left to fetter in its own petra dish on display. Disgusting how they even charged you for it to begin with. Not one redeeming factor about it except for the tragic fact that they actually put some actual effort in it with FFVII-XIII sprites.

I can at least rest knowing at least THAT "game" doesn't have any fans I sup...

Nope, ATB is excellent. Just people can't accept brand diversification.

...pose...?

Do you work for Square-Enix?

If not, why haven't they hired you yet?

I wanna see a list of best FF endings. As much as I HATED VIII and XII, I loved the endings of both games. Seriously, I can shit on those games all day but I have nothing bad to say about the endings. They were heartwarming. I loved XIII-2's ending as well but I already liked that game anyway. Noel and the combat is too good.

Now that's a list I'd like to see. Unlike FFVII, VIII had a very nice ending. FFX is up there on such a list as well. I felt... emotionally affected. ;)

I remember everyone hating on XII when it came out, now its the best or one of the best FFs ever? FF fanbase sure is weird.

"Single Player MMO"
"Why does Vaan look like a girl"
"This game/characters/plot/battle system is so boring"
"Gambits make it too easy"
"Why is it so Grindy"
"Where's the traditional turn based combat?"
"This isn't like -insert favorite FF-"

This has happened with every iteration since Final Fantasy V. Then you see why even Final Fantasy fans say that developers shouldn't take their feedback.

Because FFXII was way ahead of its time during its initial release. In 2006, nobody expected such a massive game with lots of places to go and monsters to fight. People also aren't used to more mature, political based story with slower, less dramatic fashion, and the battle system really takes time and patience for people to enjoy.

After FFXIII is released, people THEN realized how good FFXII actually is. It's like the complete opposite of FFXIII. It's not perfect, I wouldn't put it on par with VI, VII or Tactics, but it's pretty darn good. FFXII: IZJS pretty much fixes many of the issues I had with FFXII, making it even greater.

VIII should come out on top for best ending. If there was ever a most satisfying video game ending, it's VIII's.

Dat after credit scene.

No. XII was disliked because the gambit system/character progression was bad, the cast was mediocre save for Balthier and Basch and the plot takes a nose dive half way through.

I like XII but let's not pretend it didn't have problems. At the very least, apparently ZJS fixes the battle system. Too bad we never got it.

this is true for every FF after 7. Tons of hate because it wasn't the previous game, then as soon as the next title is out, that game is a misunderstood work of genius and the NEW game is the worst thing ever.

Yea, I got pretty far but stopped due to the difficulty as well(there was one place where I had to go down a tough dungeon and then fight two tough bosses, tried several times and gave up because I got tired of how long it took).

But I still enjoyed the game. A slightly less awesome FFIV basically, which isn't that much of an insult at all.

If people seriously try to qualify 8 as one of the worse Final Fantasy games outside the mainline franchise, they're delusional and desperately need to revisit it.

Perhaps. I can see why people dislike Gambit, but I enjoyed it. I like customizing party A.I. in an intricate manner, and I never really let Gambit take control over my main character anyway. So Gambit really serves as a tool for controlling the A.I. indirectly, which is pretty nifty. Only issue is that the options are locked out for the most part until the story progresses in the original. That was fixed in IZJS.

License board system, yeah, not too big of a fan either. You can't see what's in that tile if it's not exposed by your previously unlocked ones, so it's difficult to plan for your character building. Comes IZJS, the boards are switched to separate twelve jobs, making characters unique, and the layout is more predictable for your character progression.

I'll cut anyone who talks bad about the chocobo's dungeon games.

Wish they were on PSN for download to my vita/ps3/psp ... damn you square... So many great games from the 5th gen, yet they refuse to release so many of them. Only the multi-million sellers get released on psn from square....uggh

Where is our Chocobo Dungeon 1 and 2, bushido blade, brave fencer musachi, etc....

Not entirely true. FFVII through X had their small share of detractors, but XII had a *lot* of them because it was more of a departure than any of the previous games. And it was largely a case of it being misunderstood at first. I had the same impressions. Started out sceptical, gradually warmed to it and then by the end, I quite liked it(even if I don't think its one of the best ones). I think many others went through that same progression.

I'm willing to bet that XIII will not be held with reverence in a couple years by most.

The whole list should be XIII. Completely destroyed the franchise, while showing SE was incapable of making games beyond the PS2 era, and their complete lack of understanding what is bad game design. The series deserves far more hate than is in this thread. Final Fantasy and its fans deserved better.

No XIII-2 to on the list?
That sequel managed to outclass XIII with how bad it was.
Wonder how the list would have been had they resorted to making it a top 5 list and keeping with mainline only.

you must have missed the shitstorm that hit when VIII came out.

XIII? probably not. the game was legitimately broken/unfinished, which doesn't happen often. XIII-2 though? I would bet money on it.

How dare they hate on Mystic Quest? They should have put Revenant Wings or Tactics A2 on the list instead.

I haven't played Mystic Quest, but Tactics A2 (although it's a bit on the conservative side) and Revenant Wings are very far from being mediocre. Heck, I even had more fun with RW than with XII.

Of course. Why would it be?

XIII has no redeeming quality whatsoever. It lacks some form of sensible and well-written story, has a terrible cast of characters (and villains), battle design that was half-assed and huge step down from X or XII, being one massive hallway simulator with no towns or backtracking or some form of exploration outside of one area, no interesting sidequests or minigames, no towns, no NPC to chat with, spawned 2 sequels, has Lightning (worst FF protagonist ever) in it, etc etc.

The less spoken about the game, the better.

A massive contrast to VII's horrible ending.
Yeah. I actually loved VII's ending as it was happening. Seeing Aeris again, the meteor about to hit, etc. Then the flash of light and...nothing. No resolution. Just a cliffhanger on whether or not humanity survived. I actually felt incredibly pissed.

It just wasn't my cup of tea.

Anyone who thinks FFVIII deserves a place in the list needs their nuts slapped.
Yup.

I disagree. I think XIII was a very flawed game but it only got as much vitriol as it does now because of the constant sequels. The game had a good soundtrack, fun battle system and beautiful settings. Art direction wasn't my favourite in certain parts but it was decent.

Overall it's one of the weakest games but it's not as terrible as it's made out to be. That goes to it's sequels.

I give you fun battle system. It's not really fun for my case, but okay.

Good graphics and music are a given for mainline Final Fantasy.

Don't really care for the sequels.

Chocobo's Dungeon DOES NOT deserve any place on this list. It's a very solid roguelike with some cool gameplay elements. One of my favorite Wii games.

I don't think SaGa deserves a place either, especially so high up on the list. It's definitely inferior to later games in the series, but it's not one of the worst Final Fantasy games.

Completely fair. I'm just saying it's very possible for people to change their mind about XIII but since it came out with two sequels that no one really wanted other than a select few fans, it's made it much harder.

I hate the sequels with a passion.

I agree with this. However I think one of the biggest issues for XIII was it's story.
It's just so ridiculously convoluted for no reason. After the 1 hour mark there's no reason to even care what is going on. The Data Logs don't even help flesh everything out if you're somehow insane enough to go through them all. But as you said I did like a lot of the other stuff there. There were the makings of a good FF game but sadly plenty of things held it back. XIII-2 in my eyes was a complete step backwards though.

List is pretty accurate but they should have waited until Lightning Returns came out, and also FF: The Spirits Within needs to be on there.
