Gaming... A Eulogy...

Most anything is gonna be shit, that's just the way it is. That being said there's still way more great games than there's time to play & re-play. Still super hyped about Cyberpunk 2077, Knights of Honor 2, Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Kingdom Come 2 & Xcom 3 so I'm not worried I will lack things to play. Inevitably there will be really cool AA release as well.

I have to say, starting the show with remakes and continuing with sequels wasn't the most exciting move. Still early days though.

This will collapse if it keeps up.

The market is a hell of a correction device.
Will everyone stop playing games because they are forced to stare at a womans ass for a change?

What horrible fate, how can man survive?

I'd say that's an overreaction. It's not that there was "forced" (or otherwise) "diversity" (or somesuch buzzword), it's just that there were comparably fewer games with more-or-less obvious male "cultural coding".
Once one reaches a certain age, it becomes relatively easy to spot whether devs/pubs want to send out feelers to a particular demographic.

So.

I know the PS5 conference is still running but I don't think we need to see anymore.

MS's showing will be equally as shitty.

So, what's your new hobby going to be GAF, now you have realised that a shiny lick of paint isn't going to help the stagnant, shitty games with a 'design by committee' template?

Next gen you will either get COD and the usual suspects or games desperately trying to grab the lime light with various agenda shoe horned in or games which desperately attempt to look good for streamers and influencers.

What are you going to do, give it up, go outside and finally see the sunrise / sunset or dig out that trusty PS2?

Um, I'm gonna need a source for that. I want to get it taken down...from the internet.

Honestly, the problem is that its become acceptable to release trash or subpar quality and get away with it. Unfortunately, videogames are a business and businesses are designed to make money. Creativity and originality are hard things to consistently attain.

I dont blame developers for releasing garbage, as a business you're looking for the easiest way into consumers wallets no questions asked. I blame the consumers (gamers) for sitting idle and letting this whole era of games lacking substance and quality continue by accepting it. If you dont buy trash then it doesnt sell.

When you look at life outside of gaming, its pretty fucked up. I've noticed a HUGE increase in political themes in videogames recently and every time I see it I think to myself: why is this being injected into gaming?

Somewhere along the line there's been this unconcious shift where games are looked at as mainly artistic spectacles, and it shows in just how unoriginal and samey they all are. You have a lot of artistic games coming out lacking very harshly in substance and good gameplay content. The industry is leaning very hard to one side of things, but when it comes to what makes a game truly great, its the complete package as a whole. It's turned into this megalo blockbuster business of recycling garbage like the film industry.

I've said it before: Give me PS2 graphics and good gameplay, fuck these 'cinematic experiences'. I watched this reveal and noticed diminishing returns in graphic fidelity, albeit with the new streaming of the SSD, and I saw a lot of videogames that are trying to pose as a fucking pixar movie.

Also, why so many childrens games? Where is the content for the older audience who arent four and dont want politically charged/politically correct games about Karen's in space or some other bs?

You know, some people said the PS2 era was too edgy. Well now everything is fucking sunshine and rainbows. Give me dark and edgy again I liked it better.

Im genuinely curious on what kind of presentation or what kind of games should have Sony showed to make op happy.

a bunch of clones of Age of Empires 2? Mickey Mania remastered? a visual novel? Metal Gear Solid?

You don't need to give up the hobby, just don't expect it to be as exciting as it was in previous generations. A combination of diminishing returns in terms of tech advancement and the fact that gaming has now fully entered 21st century mainstream corporate culture (with all that that entails) makes sure of that.

For me personally, this is how I expect to be spending my gaming time next gen:
- 40% retro gaming (all consoles, computers and arcades up to and including the DC/PS2/GC/Xbox gen). None of us had the money to buy all the great games that came out back then, so there is a huge library of amazing, creative experiences waiting to be had. Team sizes and budgets were both much smaller in the pre-HD era, plus gaming itself wasn't quite so mainstream, resulting in some really interesting and innovative games
- 20% VR gaming. VR seems to be the one area of modern gaming were there really is an amazing amount of innovation and experimentation going on. Developers still having fully worked out what makes a good VR game, meaning you get lots of interesting takes on player movement, level design, controls etc.
- 20% indie gaming. A lot of these are passion projects from small teams, which often play much better than their AAA cousins.
- 20% mainstream gaming. Because there will still be some good experiences to be had, despite the drawbacks of the current games indutry.

I've been gaming since Atari 5200 and gaming a seriously since NES and this generation has been one of my favorites. Especially Sony and Nintendo first party games and some multiplats like Witcher 3 and RDR2 and so on.

More of the same next gen is a-ok by me. 😀Gaming will ain't my top hobby.

I honestly hope some of the disgruntled do quit the hobby. I can't think of another hobby where so many enthusiast sites are full of people who spend more time complaining about their hobby than enjoying it. Silly as hobbies are supposed to fun and/or rewarding and if they aren't it's time to move on to other things. Wasting time complaining endlessly about a hobby online is pretty silly as life is short and there are tons of hobbies people can find and actually enjoy when they no longer enjoy a particular one.

Today's conference was 100% booty - there were zero killer apps shown. None.
There was no Mario 64, no Soul Calibur, no Halo, no MGS2/4.
This entire past generation was trash too in hindsight.
Good thing there's plenty to play and revisit from the past.

Pro tip:

if you are an 'old head' gamer and wish to continue gaming... You will get angrier and angrier and sadder and sadder.

This is a fact. Bite the bullet and play retro or get the fuck out of dodge and understand when the parties over 😎😂😂😂
Pretty much. I'm most likely going to just finish my ps4/xbox one backlog and sit out the next gen at least.

Do you find that there are still enough older shoot'em ups that you've never played before serving as a steady supply, or are you feeling the lack of modern ones?
I was being sarcastic, but a serious answer to your question...

There are more than enough old ones and enough modern ones. The whole point of the genre is to sink your teeth into one and to really shake the value out of it, whether that means going for a 1cc (which takes enough time as it is) or going for a respectable score (which takes longer). For instance I am still faithfully playing DDP Daioujou after 3 years. I haven't even 1cc'd it. That's just one game from one series from one shmup company.

I'm playing through Ikaruga for the very first time now. I think I've died 25 times already, and I've not even got past the second level yet (I did just discover you can do that chargeblast/clearscreen thing, so things should get easier from here on). I can feel my brain being rewired as I play it. Having your eyes, brain and hands getting used to processing and reacting to all that information is quite a trip.

I gave Sony the benefit of the doubt before the unveiling, but after the disappointing showing, I am going to stick with Nintendo. Sony overpromised and underdeliveried, and I have very little faith they will be able to repeat the PS4 success.

Their leadership and priorities do not give me confidence that they are in touch with their core playstation fans. They are chasing that fortnite/"inclusive gaming" money and even tiptoeing into MS's terrority of streaming/gaming as a service. They are alienating their core gamers and seemingly abandoning the Japanese market.

Yeah man, you get it! That's all shmups are about. The genre is very simple and honest in its demands. Hopefully you enjoy sticking with it, and when you take a break I bet you'll be impressed with yourself after returning. The brain munches on shmup stage layout while you sleep. If you've ever had 'the Tetris effect' when you close your eyes or if you've dreamed about Guitar Hero notes scrolling down from the sky, shmups will be like home to you.

i am thankful that 90% of forum posters don't have any ambition in life beyond their keyboard and mouse.

Imagine if the people on this thread were making games or even making decisions in the game industry? Our release calendar would be 500 different versions of Duke Nuke 'em Forever and some of the most perverted visual novels this side of the Pacific.

Spider-Man part 2, Horizon part 2, Demon Souls part 1.5, GTA part 1.25....not how I expected the gaming revolution to be brought in. I'll take Cyberpunk 2077 and Death Stranding on my 2080 Ti and call it a year. Wake me up when the 3080 is in, thanks.

PC is where it's at and where it's always been since around 1995, tbh.

As others have said, OP, if you want to feel excited about video games again, get a decent VR headset. It's really a game changer and you can't understand until you try it. I recommend Superhot and Astro Bot if you get PSVR to see what I mean. As for AAA garbage, that's been iffy/bad since PS3 days in my opinion. There are always great games coming out though if you look past AAA. I recently just played through Iconoclasts and it was a really fun action/puzzler platformer.

I think gamers are becoming aged and cynical like me. I've posted in the past on not enjoying the hobby anymore as much anymore. Probably won't see a major shift in gaming till we crack quantum simulations.

I'll still be investing in gaming whether it be PC or consoles in future mind you but those expecting radical shifts and putting games like Cyber Punk or Sony's IPs on a pedestal are bound to be dissapointed.

We live an era of gaming where the opportunity to make a game and have it reach millions of people around the world, exists for literally anyone. A single individual with drive and determination can make a game that can inspire millions.

If you want something new, something different, something that's not focus tested, go ahead and make it. If you don't think you can, then go ahead and support those smaller developers who make those unique titles.

The big publishers will continue to make mostly homogeneous experiences that people consume en masse. That's never gonna change. But its not like we live in this bleak world where only big publishers can be successful.

You say that is if people who's asshole starts to itch everytime they see a woman or minority featured in a videogame trailer is the majority.

No, you're very much the minority, ironically.

Normal people don't really care

So the tears are delicious

I didn't think twice about diversity while watching the event. How is it that some people are so laser focused on these topics across every medium in entertainment. When I watch a film I could care less if a character is black, hispanic, gay, female, or alien. A bad movie is a bad movie no matter who's in it. Commenting on it by praising it or claiming a company is shoehorning in diversity is just odd to me, as it adds no value.

So it was progressive when non whites wanted representation in games but it is racist when whites want white representation? Really shows your agenda.

You're the kind of knob who sees B.E.T. and wonders, "Where's White Entertainment Television?!"

Dont be that guy. Just because other genders and races are becoming more prevalent as far as representation in the medium goes doesnt mean that white men are being discriminated against. Now you know how minorities have felt for decades. Cut the shit.

I'm just getting bored by the technology. We're not getting the giant leaps in visuals we used to. The new consoles just feel like swapping components on your PC

I think the last sentence is a BIT harsh, but yeah other than that I can't help but feel the same way. I'm seeing plenty of sequels I want (RE 8, Ratchet RA, Horizon 2, Spidey expansion), plus plenty of new IPs that look promising. This is about the complete opposite of "disappointing" that I could imagine aside from GTA 5 refusing to die, yet nothing but doom and gloom here. (shrugs) I dunno, but whatever, at the end of the day if you're happy and others are disappointed, it's best to just focus on your own happiness and not let how others feel get you down.

And I'm fine with the different protagonists in terms of gender/race. Aloy was always cool-looking to me. Kena looks adorable. With Returnal, I can't even think of many games where a middle-aged woman gets to be the lead, that's cool. The dude from Death Loop seems cool and fun. And virtually everyone who's seen Spider-verse knows the potential Miles has as a character. I'm not starved for white dude as leads (geezus, my face is practically on the lead of a 7 book/8 movie series of a kid going to wizard school, I've got no room to complain about not getting represented), like they ruled the scene for how many gens, christ PS3/360 gen it felt like 80% of the leads could all be brothers of the main dude from Infamous, that's how bad it was in terms of the lead always being a stern-faced white guy with a shaved or bald head. All these leads of the PS5 games at least all have their own look to them. And in terms of white dudes, Ethan is still the lead of RE 8, and I've not played the Hitman games but I assume Agent 47 is white (or possibly Asian, like I said I've not played them). Plus games where you can design your character like I assume Demon's Souls is if it's like the rest of the Soulsborne games.

Makes me glad I went with a new desktop PC this year. My first PC upgrade in a long while.

I don't even need new games. There's so much catching up to do.

I'm on your side on this one. I think the future will definitely be AI and machine learning in this regards. Increasing visuals with the way games are made today cost too much money and time from artists. Advances in this field that automate and simulate real life will be fundamental for the future of gaming. This is a way off. It'll happen in our time though. Future generations will have quantum computing as well and once the technology singularity happens literally everything you could dream of will be possible.

It's because that's exactly what's happening. Except you're changing 5 years old crappy parts with new crappy parts.
I'd rather exchange 5 years old great parts for new great parts. Sure it costs more...but you get better visuals on most games. And my PC is used for a lot of other things, including working :)

The same exact games, but with white men in the place of the main character and no other non white characters would have been received to great acclaim. You're better off just ignoring them.

Premature ecrapulation. :P

I never get the knee-jerk hate that some "gamers" have. (The machine isn't even out yet, smdh.) There's already more great stuff than I could ever cram into multiple lifetimes out there.

Did you even read the post I quoted? The guy was being a racist. Calm your tits.

And cut the reparations shit, you sound dull.
