Gaming: You know what really grinds my gears?

I inserted a physical copy of Metal Gear Solid Delta Snake Eater in my PS5, get it setup to copy the game and install the update. I then put my PS5 into rest mode. I boot up my PS5 four hours later and copying is at 10%.

What grinds your gears?

When the game doesn't auto-pause when the batteries of the gamepad run out.

Probably doesn't happen on console since I guess the system message comes up and that pauses the game, but on PC some games just keep running like nothing happened and it sucks.

Sucks to be a PC gamer but let me tell you one thing about the "auto pause" of the consoles for a certain type of games that I happen to spend hundreds or thousands of hours on them…

Multiple endings in games, especially when there's 5 6 7 endings... I find like why stop there have 20 endings, it just cheapens a story when it's constantly what if, what if this, what if that... Just give me an ending, a story only needs one ending imo

on console it also depends on the devs to implement an auto-pause on disconnect. many do it, but it's not a universal thing.
obvious exceptions are of course the soulsborne games, as they literally can not be paused, just like many souls-likes and souls-lites

I mean.. why would you turn the system off when you're reading from the disc to install though?

I dont bother, so I dont know if it's changed lately but to play a UBI beta, you got to sign up for a UBI account.

But in general, any game that requires an email profile to play is a big turn off.

For you guys talking battery life above, Xbox play and charge kits are trash. I stopped buying them. They last 3-4 years before never holding a charge. So to work, you got to constantly have it plugged in for power. So it now becomes a wired gamepad. They'd cost $30 CDN too.

After the last one died, I just went back to AA batteries and bought a 48 pack of Kirkland Costco batteries for like $15. Way better. And I can use those batteries for other things around the house that need AA too.

That thing on some RPGs that when you are trying all paths to find treasure and stuff but by mistake it happens that you go on the correct route the first time which triggers a boss fight/cutscenes which then takes you out of the map and you cant go back

Console gaming changing things that aren't broken and moving in the wrong direction post-PS2.
The PS2's weaknesses are significant load times and high game development costs.
PlayStation's focus PS2-forward should have been on decreasing load times and decreasing game development costs.
PS2 games with near-zero load times and PS1 games without load times would be in many ways be better than what we have in PS5 games with significant load times.

Audio logs that stop playing when you return to gameplay. Don't make me just sit in a menu.

This is extra annoying in Gamepass games because MS should fucking bake it into the platform or at least make sure it is in their published games. It happens without warning too like in the middle of combat.

Honestly I never got the PS controllers are better because they can be recharged thing. Even with a play and charge like solution, being able to fall back on batteries when your controller loses charge is a great option. I will never not have Xbox controllers for my PCs. I will probably have others like my 8bitdos but will always have functioning XBox ones. I just wished they were more reliable.

When a game wants and tries so hard to be a movie.

Games are about playing. Movies are about watching. Fundamentally different mediums, and whilst I don't mind a short cut scene at the end of a level, it's constant lengthy cut scenes and enforced semi-interactive sections (slow walk, etc), whilst the game designers indulge in a misguided desire to be film makers.

The latest God Of War games are so, so tedious compared to the original arcade action titles, and it's all because they've forgotten they are about playing and decided they should be about watching.

Too many elements thrown at your face when the game starts. How am I supposed to remember all the people and stakes involved when I don't even know yet what I am playing ?

Oh god yes..

And these..

I have absolutely hated, and I mean with a passion, quick time events. They're the utter bane of gaming and I've hated them since Dragons Lair in the arcades.

Never seen the point. Never will. They go against the very being of gaming to me.

To boil gaming down to a specific chance timing is awful.

OG Resi 4 is one of my fave games, but the QTEs are dire. The worst ones are the button mashing events.

I assumed it always pause but it didn't on Silksong and got me killed xD
Any other game it happened it was pausing.

Tell me you've never played Nier Automata without telling me you've never played Nier Automata.

- Removal of a simply pause menu when i can play an offline game (What kind of idea was that FROM Software ?! If im playing offline, there no reason I cannot pause a game to take a dump, you idiots!)

- Stupid checkpoint location for make any area longer and more difficult in a artificial manner.

- Abrupt gameplay changes because of reasons (think about the last boss of Uncharted IV).

- Gimmick bosses when the developer do not have talent for that.

- Stupid rewards after exploring an area (why should I explore any area on zelda BOTW/TOTK if I know the reward will be something almost 100% disposable?!).

Bland and generic premises. Oh wow, you mean to tell me an alien race that is a threat to humanity has invaded and I am the last hope? Where have I heard that before.

When the game makes me perform actions slowly or walk slowly for any reason. Just let me be free!

ultimate immersion breaker...

unless it's actually explained in-universe... like say you're extremely wounded or something.
still usually bad gameplay wise, but at least it makes sense, while usually slow walking segments make no in-universe sense.

Not having enough time for gaming.
This. So many awesome games, tons of rpgs and open world games and no time to play them. I can play city builders or turn based games at work since i work at home and have my pc next to my work pc. I can get a turn or two between clients and calls, but its not the same as dedicated time.

It's also why I have shifted away from console and pc gaming (except for a few hours on the weekend) to gaming on switch/switch2/steamdeck. Playing handheld with pause /resume on power off, I can play for a few minutes no matter where. On the toilet, yeah I can grind a few battles out in a jrpg or play a few metroidvania areas. On the porch, while cooking dinner, etc.....

Also once you get married (or even worse if you have kids. Did that already, with my first wife, 2nd wife no kids but still no time) your time goes down for gaming drastically, unless they too are into gaming.
My wife is into other types of gaming, board, card, physical outside non organized sports, and stopped buying consoles with the wii (she has a gamecube and wii and was a nice bonus playing games I never had).
You have to dedicate time to your wife after work (if you don't say bye bye to said marriage, and i am not talking about just sex). This time takes away from gaming. So again this is where the switch helps out, big time.
I can be on the couch playing a game on my switch while she watches her shows. It's a win win. Thank you Nintendo (and playstation before 2017 for vita and psp), portable systems are not just for kids.

My hope is my hands, and brain still works by the time I retire and I am not in constant pain so I can play all these games I never finished. One problem, the switch and my collection will probably fail with its battery long before 20 years from now.

when there are a couple paths forward, and you choose one of them and something falls or locks behind you, barring you from exploring the other path

makes me a big fomo homo
