Gaming's longest-suffering fanbases

Sega fans in general, some of them are still bitter over the Dreamcast's death.

i'm still so bitter about the saturn's death that i never really accepted dreamcast as a successor

Gonna go way back here.

M.U.L.E.

Everyone wanted a sequel. it was such a perfect game. Wise men (and former men who became women) know of what I speak.

Past that, maybe a good D&D rules based game. Pen and paper rules please. Something like the SSI Gold Box days or Baldur's Gate.

actually there's not too much to be bitter about as a sega fan, since the company's absolute dive down the toilet is explained by financial catastrophe and presumably the departure of most of their talent -- sega isn't quite sega in name only, but that's not far from the truth. as opposed to nintendo or square or scej, whose absolute dives down the toilet have been purely voluntary

i mean i guess there's still the 'why didn't the videogame marketplace at large realize that saturn was the correct direction for videogames to take and why didn't battle garegga outsell gran turismo' bitterness

Beyond Good & Evil - Quit fucking teasing me on the sequel.

Banjo-Kazooie - I'm not trying to troll Nuts & Bolts, but seriously we haven't had a proper Banjo game since Grunty's Revenge on GBA (2003), and that game pretty much blew. Where is Banjo-Threeie?

Animal Crossing - We've basically been given the same game since the Nintendo 64. :(

Conker's Bad Fur Day - Just another dead Rare IP.

Half-Life - Ummm, how many years has it been since Episode 2?

Mario Golf - Four of the best games I've ever played. Made perfect since to come out on Wii, and yet we never got one.

Oddworld - We finally see some revitalization in the series, and they go and botch the Steam ports.

Phantasy Star Online Episodes - I and II were unbelievable. III as a card game. Universe blew. Give us IV.

Rayman - The new sidescroller looks gorgeous, but frankly I preferred 2 and 3 to the original and wish the series could have kept growing from those entries.

Really the only answer can be Sega fans.

Panzer Dragoon Saga - cliffhanger ending, sequel canned, original source code lost (!?!)

Shenmue - need I say more?

Jet Set Radio - ok sequel made for Xbox, no sequel planned

Valkyria Chronicles - spawns small but dedicated fanbase on PS3, instantly ditched because Sega decide they can make more money on PSP

Golden Axe - gets the worst sequel since ever

Virtua Fighter - crappy ports, no updates

Shining Force - no real sequels made

Phantasy Star - turned in to average mmorpg, single player games get no sequel

I guess I don't even need to mention Sonic. The list goes on and on...

As others mentioned the fans of: Sega's IPs, Zone of the enders, non-HD consoles Valkyria Chronicles (deserves to be separated), Freespace (and the entire genre), etc...

And I would like to add the Devil May Cry fanbase... 2 outstanding games, 2 awful iterations and a potential aberration in the making. (I hope I'm wrong)

my envisioned panzer dragoon sequel happens not to involve standing around my living room doing pretend dragon ridey moves. i'm not saying i didn't do pretend dragon ridey moves while playing zwei, but i don't think they should be compulsory

then again when i played lair i was like 'this would be a superb spiritual sequel to the panzer dragoon series, except i want the hideous fail to involve my whole body,' so maybe you have a point

Coleco fans haven't had it good since '82. Boom, thread won. I think that SEGA has to be the real answer. They are the Cubs of the videogame world. Though the poor souls waiting for a return to glory for 90's PC stuff haven't had it good until GOG started putting up some stuff. All FPS and RTS since Half Life came out on PC.

I think we can settle on SEGA fans in general here. Virtually ALL of their old franchises are dead.

The only good internally-developed SEGA games we get anymore are Yakuza and Valkyria Chronicles which like the rest of Japan has been forced onto handhelds by the expenses in HD game development.

Sonic - mostly crap now.

Virtua Fighter - basically exclusive to Japanese arcades at this point.

SEGA Sports - killed by EA (except Virtua Tennis).

Shinobi
Shining Force
Jet Set Radio
Shenmue
Skies of Arcadia
Phantasy Star (mainline)

By my recollection, NONE of these franchises has gotten a new game since at least 2002. SEGA as we know it basically died when Sammy restructured it in 2004. They now only exist as a shell publishing outside work like PlatinumGames and Total War.

Tales fans with little or no knowledge of Japanese.

More like Tales Fans who do not want to import (especially with the current crazy prices).

It is very easy to beat the games with zero understanding of Japanese.

Well, yeah, you can probably beat a lot of games with no understanding of Japanese, but some people do play games for the story, particularly RPGs.

Suikoden Fans? :(

Incidentally SEGA just put a shitload of their games up on sale.

Afterburner Climax is half-off on both platforms.
Phantasy Star Portable 2 is $15.
Valkyria Chronicles 2 is $15.
etc.

It may be hard to believe, but some people play RPGs for reasons other than the gameplay! Crazy, I know!

Sonic fans
Skies of arcadia fans
Shenmue fans
Jet set radio fans
Panzer dragoon fans
Shining force fans
Phantasy star fans

List continues, fuck you sega.

It's like saying the Shenmue sequel is coming out on Japanese cellphones so you can't possibly complain!

Sequel on inferior platform and/or with "inferior" control scheme is better than no sequel at all.

Speaking of which, the people listing Valkyria Chronicles in this thread are nuts. I can understand Sega as a whole, but VC on the PSP is NOT something you should fault them for especially when 2 is a great game and 3 is looking to fix everything that was wrong with it.

Debatable.

I disagree. It's like releasing the Hobbit part one on Blu-ray then making part two an iPhone exclusive because New Line decided there's more money to be made.

Different mediums. Games aren't passive like movies. The only difference here is a downgraded Canvas engine (which I'll admit looked amazing on PS3). The great gameplay is still there and you can even play it on a TV/monitor if the portability bothers you that much. That's what I do.

I`m not nuts. Its like saying all Gran Turismo games are now will be on the PSP. I for one would be dissapointed.

It also lost the 5.1 LPCM / DTS surround sound mode.

I perfectly understand being disappointed, but I wouldn't call it a "longest-suffering fanbase" at all (especially since the first game is from 2008). [Ignorant generalization] A lot of Gran Turismo's appeal is based on eye candy [/Ignorant generalization] and is a long running series older than a decade. I would like to think VC is more about the genre redefining gameplay than the beautiful graphics.

Right, but what is a gameplay? Isn't graphics and sound and characters design all part of it? In that respect, VC2 is a very different game. Even if we don't mention stuff like smaller maps and fewer units in battle.

I'll agree though that calling VC fanbase the longest suffering is wrong.

Really? Homecoming was great as well Origins on the PSP. Oh, and Shattered memories is pretty much my favorite wii game.

Not everyone agrees. I hated Origins and SM was a bore for the most part. I have no interest in Homecoming after everything I've heard about it.

I'd have to add my vote for Sega as well. The infighting between the Japanese and US office resulted in SO many stupid decisions that crushed their fans. Look at what they did to the Saturn sequel of Eternal Champions. I enjoyed the game and was looking forward for the 32 bit version even if it was the poor bastard step child of Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat. It would be one thing if it was canceled because of quality. But here is their reason told by the former lead of the "series"Â…

Sega-16: Many gamers were eagerly anticipating the final installment of the series on the Saturn. That console's packaging went as far as to include a photo and lableled it as "coming soon," yet the game was cancelled. Rumors abound that Sega of Japan were responsible, as they didn't want competition for Virtua Fighter. Is this true? Exactly what happened?

Michael Latham(designer/producer): Well, your sources are correct. Sega of Japan felt that Eternal Champions was keeping Virtua Fighter from being more successful in the US and that it would be better if the company focused on only one franchise...and as Sega is a Japanese company, the Japan side won. It was a crushing blow, and was the only time in working nearly a decade at Sega I considered quitting. I mainly stayed with the hope to change that decision, but sadly never could. Even when we did the NetFighter project for Heat.net, we weren't able to use the Eternal characters as a hidden bonus. From Japan's view the game never existed, in spite of its stellar sales and even offers to do comic books and a cartoon around it.

:lol at people mentioning Valkyria Chronicles. At least the game's universe is getting more development compared to other game sequels that will never get the light of day:
-Chrono Series
-Phantasy Star RPG
-A good Final Fantasy game
-Skies of Arcadia
-Shining Force
-Jet Grind Radio
-Sega GT
-Seiken Densetsu (like 2 and 3)

Sega fans are tortured souls. I never liked Sonic but I kind of feel their pain with Valkyria Chronicles.

I vote for Fable, though. The first game was a broken promise, the 2nd and 3rd games are far too short and easy for their own good. So much potential in the atmosphere and overall quality...

Being a Monolith Soft fan in the west hasn't been too easy since Nintendo bought them.

Disaster: Nintendo probably released it in Europe by some weird accident
Soma Bringer: Nowhere to be seen
Xenoblade: Changes of western release are somewhere between slim and none

:(
