Gauntlet Legends and Gauntlet: Dark Legacy Appreciation Thread and Version Comparison

Fixed a couple of things in the Feature Differences table, and added a line. Here's the addition. I had not realized that the Dreamcast version has a different method of character unlocking, and had forgotten that it doesn't have Sumner either. Also I separated the PS1/N64 and GC/Xbox/PS2 styles of character unlocking.

Treasure Rooms, can switch to character or start as new if you load file, choose "new game", and select the unlocked character: L-N64, L-PS1; Get All Coins in Treasure Rooms, will unlock as a lv.1 character selectable in your file: DL-PS2, DL-GC, DL-Xbox; Reach Level 25, load file, choose "new game", hold Turbo button, and you'll start a game as the four unlockable characters: L-DC

Does Unlocked Sumner Start At Level 1 or 99? Lv. 1: L-N64, L-PS1; Lv. 99: DL-PS2, DL-GC, DL-Xbox; No Playable Sumner: L-Arcade, DL-Arcade, L-DC

I never even realized I'd get to eventually switch to other unlockable characters. I pretty much went from Warrior to Minotaur then went "Aaaaaaaaah get this thing off my head get it off get it off" and never looked back. This is useful to know should I ever decide to get back in the saddle. I've got the game sitting in one box or another, maybe someday I'll dig it out and have another go.
The probable reason why you can't switch back is that the upgrade characters have better stats than the standard ones. They are better. But yes, it was a mistake to not let you switch back to your original class anyway, even though it has lower stats.

I've probably still got the save file I gave up on, for that matter. Deleting it after my poor dude got bull-headed just seemed needlessly cruel. Maybe it would have been a mercy killing, but I liked to pretend that he could someday find someone who could love him in spite of his... affliction.
Heh... yeah, when I beat Legends with the Warrior, I stuck with the regular form, didn't switch to the Minotaur. I did create a new file with Sumner once I unlocked him, though.

On that note, I much prefer the way N64/PS1 Legends does Sumner -- on those he starts as a powerful but level 1 character who you level up. In the console Dark Legacy games, though, he starts at level 99, so there's nothing really to do with him once you unlock him. Kind of lame in comparison. (And yes, I do have a lv. 99 Sumner in N64 Legends.)

I wasn't trying to quibble over definitions or anything, I just remembered how the revelation that
holy shit guys Gauntlet actually has a last boss and the preachy jerk from the intermission screen eventually shuts up
blew my then-young mind when I reached it and wanted to share my joy/annoyance with the world. I also wanted to spoiler tag a game that's a quarter of a century old just in case there was somebody who didn't want to have the gripping conclusion of Gauntlet ruined for them.
Well, I admit that I forgot about
that boss
when writing that, probably because I haven't actually finished Gauntlet 1 for the NES myself (it gets so hard...), but in my defense, I technically didn't say "final boss", I said bosses at the end of themed levels. And that is something Gauntlet 1 for the NES doesn't have. :p

But yeah, I do think that it was a major step forward for the series. Adding an ending,
a final boss
, and a save system were big improvements.

Dark Legacy is one of the best co-op games ever created. I remember checking up the metacritc scores for it a few years back and wanted to throw something, heh. I really wanted Midway to last long enough this gen to see an HD remix of DL with online co-op. Sadly it never came to be. Part of me is gracious though, for I would have never left the house again if that were to have happened x_x
Yeah, that's for sure. Gamespot's reviews of Legends and Dark Legacy are particularly shameful. They should be at least double what most of them are. They're both outstanding games, among the best.

Also, I'll leave this here as a reminder as to how great and memoriable the music in this game is:

Over 10 years later (holy shit when you say it...) and I still hear this running through my head every once in a blue moon.
I don't really remember most of the music like that, it's more the voices that I find the most memorable... the Legends/Dark Legacy announcer is the best! Seriously, I don't know if there's a better game announcer anywhere. But yeah, it does have some good music too.

Just want to revive this thread since I used to really love playing Gauntlet Legends. It's really a shame the N64 version never was released on Virtual Console -- the cartridge is starting to get expensive.

I was really hoping everyone thought it was shovelware and it would be going for pennies.

I bought a copy of Dark Legacy for Xbox though after reading through this and I'm really looking forward to diving back into this era of Gauntlet.
