Gay characters in video games (?)

Fire Emblem's Ike? That's kinda blowing my speculative mind. Hades? Wow, along with Birdo/Vivian/whatever Tingle is, Nintendo is secretly on a [parade] roll.

When you think about, Hades is too much of a sassy bitch for any woman and he
basically got into a cat fight with Medusa, bickered with the Goddesses Real Housewives-style, and probably prolonged his mischief and Pit's adventure just to spend time with him.
It just makes sense! 0_0

Since it's set in the past, I'm sure Namco had no need for labels for these guys:

Maxi (I think the gay speculation started all the way back since the first Soul Calibur)

Man, some of the posts in this topic... :/

Anyway, for everyone saying that they fear backlash for gay characters being brought more to the forefront, that shouldn't be a deterrent. Companies shouldn't make a practice of placating bigots.

god I love that article.

anyway, I would have thought the sarcasm inherent in my stated position was fairly apparent, but maybe the fact that some people take that position in earnest caused some confusion.

Poes Law. I read the post he quoted before I saw who it was and I was concerned... you did a masterful job.

Tingle isn't gay. He's a cosplaying manchild who has a sexual encounter with a female fairy in Rosy Rupeeland.

Also when he became a vampire he only sucked blood from the ladies (different animation for guys).

Yeah, I forgot to mention that.

When using bloodsucking on women, he bites their necks complete with erotic moaning.

When using it on men I have no fucking idea what he's doing but it isn't very erotic.

Geldoblame from Baten Kaitos Origins.

Arcade and Veronica from NV.

Also, Gann from MtoB was originally going to be Bi according to Avellone, but they were forced to censor it. His interest in the male mc still pretty obvious though, even if he doesn't directly state it.

WTF? Where does this come from?!

Well, Soren acts very obsessively toward Ike, devoting his life to him, etc. Add to this that Ike shows no interest in any of the girls and has an ending with him, it's not really hard to see their relationship as more than friends.

I can't believe that Atlus outright saying Kanji is a homosexual still hasn't killed this debate.

That's because after his dungeon he shows interest in girls multiple times.

Jimmy Hopkins (Bully) is probably my favorite. Followed closely by Fiona and Micky (The Longest Journey)

I'm pretty sure Juda appreciates hotness in all of its forms.

oh yes. First and foremost Rei's hotness (he specifically says "You've always been in my heart since the academy days" o something in the manga, when he dies in his arms), although he did have a court of beautiful women who had nothing to do besides adoring him

Does anyone remember the champagne that the game mags poured over Angel (from Crazy Taxi 3)?

"A watershed moment—Angel is the first openly-gay video game character."

AFAIK, Sega never confirmed it. Even if they had, would he really have been the first?

God rest American game rags. You could trust them like the blessed Enquirer.

There are literally hours of him and Rose flirting with one another during a top secret international mission (lol) to practically disqualify him being gay.

He and Penelo is basically destined to one another so no.

But I think you're just joking with this anyways.

You could "romance" any npcs you want, male or female

Even small children!

Man the romance system in that game is so whacked out.

Thanks for being ignorant. As I said before, I understand why someone would want to play as a character they can relate to and I understand if their sexuality has a part in the story. My argument is simply, what's the point of knowing the sexuality of Nathan Drake, Masterchief, Mario etc, if it has no bearing on the story or how you play the game?

...at least one of those, it does have a bearing on the story (Drake).

The thread is a sorry state, but I can't say I'm particularly surprised. Homosexuality is a fringe topic even among most mainstream media. Many people I know would not watch a film about a gay character, even if they otherwise were not overtly homophobic. And in Hollywood--the medium that gaming is trying hardest to ape--there is scarcely little representation at all. Could anyone in this thread imagine Uncharted, replacing Elena with a guy? Probably not--the tropes it's based on require her to be a woman.

I don't think, given that, it's particularly surprising that homosexuality is massively underrepresented in a field such as videogames where in general the only audience that is catered to are heterosexual adolescent males of all ages. You only have to look at the small but vocal outrage at the possibility of cavorting like the Greeks of old in Mass Effect 3 (even though you did not have to pursue it at all, and indeed could not in the two previous games) to see part of the reason why.

I still think that Jun from Persona 2 is one of the best written homosexual characters.
Yes, he starts out a villain, but not because his sexuality or whatever, but he was manipulated with false memories into thinking his friends killed Maya Amano, their big sister figure. He becomes so obsessed with trying to get revenge that he becomes the joker. When he realizes the truth, he breaks down in tears for all the death he has caused but his friends accept him and they go and fight the manipulator together. Yes, he is a romance option for the MC, but romance is such a tiny part of Persona 2, unlike Persona 3 and 4, where half the game is social systems.
In the end, Jun's Sexuality is such a minor part of the character, you get the intention that the point of Jun was not some sort of statement, but he is just a natural character who just happens to be gay. They do play some of it for laughs if you choose the other male as your romance though, since he is straight, but its more like the characters can't believe you would like him. If you choose Jun, they are accepting. Also, in demon negotiations, Jun does get slightly played for laughs, but everyone does, so yea.

Again, what the hell does, race gender or sexually matter in a video game? Seriously?

Some people enjoy feeling represented. As a generic white man, I am pretty much universally represented, so I can't tell you whether or not I'd have a problem if I was never represented. I don't think I'd have a problem if I weren't represented, but I don't have to think too hard about it, since I don't have to. However, if I really was never represented or if were always represented in a poor light, I might have a different opinion. Or I might not. It's hard to know due to the whole Nino Blanco thing.

The sexuality thing is probably a little personal to get into here, so purposefully side-stepping that.

Maxi (I think the gay speculation started all the way back since the first Soul Calibur)

He dresses like a cross between Liberace and Elvis, but not sure that makes him gay.

Anyway, if I would have to pick "a gay" I like in games, I'd have to say Gay Tony was a step in the right direction. He was a little bit campy in the Linda Richmond and Barbara Steisand direction, but I liked the relationship and the loyalty he and Luis shared. For a Rockstar game, it was amazingly tasteful.

I also liked Zevran from Dragon Age Origins. He put it out there. He didn't let it make things weird. You can handwave itself as "alien" or whatever, but it worked.

I know what you mean but nope, him and Mai are a couple. He wants to take it slowly though.

CANON
Ash and Shen could be more than friends.
Mature and Vice are lovers.
Benimaru is straight.
Iori is too boss.
