Okay, its technically split 50/50 between female and male but theres only pics of the men. And it technically may not have been canceled so much as it wasn't picked up by Marvel. Probably because the cheesecake editions were a product of the 90s.

Add one more to the list of comic projects you'll never see. Kris Anka has revealed on Tumblr that he and Kevin Wada had been working for several months on a series of illustrations for a book akin to the Marvel Swimsuit Special books.

"I write to you today with the somber news that after a few months back and forth with the powers-that-be, circumstances have arisen that have forced us to stop production on this project," Anka said.

It's not clear if the book was officially approved by Marvel and changed, or if Anka and Wada were simply working on pieces during discussions about the book project being approved. When asked by Newsarama about this, Marvel declined to comment.

According to Anka, the book would have included 52 illustrations by he and Wada, split evenly amongst male and female characters from across the Marvel Universe. The duo had already completed several pieces for the book such as the Ghost Rider, Gambit and Hellion pieces shown here, and also mentioned preliminary work on illustrations for Storm, Captain Marvel and Mystique.

"While we are both disappointed that we can no longer work on this, there was no malice behind this decision. It is what it is," Anka continued. " Although on the plus side, this now free’s Kevin and I up to some new things potentially this year, so who knows."

Anka said they are "looking into some way to salvage" some of the work they've done on this project, and he's said some of his pieces will be sold as original art later this year.

I bet they axed it after the Spider-Woman controversy.

Bet you anything this is exactly it.

Shame too. 52 pages, half male, half female. Guess there's a Storm rough sketch floating around but I haven't found it yet. Mystique and I think Rogue were the other two females confirmed. I wonder if any more of it will be online.

I remember having this Psylocke and Archangel card confiscated at a christian camp I went to one summer long ago. I traded like 3 candy bars for it and didn't even get to hold it for 5 minutes before it was taken away.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I was hoping so much for a new Swimsuit Special. They're so cheesy and fun. ;_;

The only thing I didn't like about this idea is the fact that's only two artists. If Marvel ever does start doing the Swimsuit Specials again, I'd like to see a bunch of different people contribute to it.

But still, this is so dumb. You know how easy if would be for Marvel to really sell this to the public? Just make a portion of the proceeds benefit an LGBT charity or something. That with the 50/50 male/female split would make this a huge PR win for them.

I think they learned from Anime and have just started including trips to the beach or a hotsprings in their story lines. There was an issue of the All New Ultimates that came out about 6 months ago that was basically a swim suit issue at the beach.

Glad to know I am just as hairy as Nick Fury. Now I have someone to point to when my wife says I should get my back waxed.

Kris Anka just posted an update to the original statement.

So. as a few of you out there figured out, kevinwada and myself were working on a Marvel Swimsuit book.

I write to you today with the somber news that after a few months back and forth with the powers-that-be, circumstances have arisen that have forced us to stop production on this project.

Kevin and I are currently looking into some way to salvage some of the pieces to do something with, but in the mean time, we thought we’d treat you all to the pieces we had finished so far.

While we are both disappointed that we can no longer work on this, there was no malice behind this decision. It is what it is. Although on the plus side, this now free’s Kevin and I up to some new things potentially this year, so who knows.

EDIT:

The wording of my previous post created some confusion that I want to address:

The sketches I posted were not for an official project to be published by Marvel. They were for an artists’ sketchbook that Kevin Wada and myself were going to pitch to Marvel for approval. Kevin and I decided to pull the plug on this project, not Marvel. We were proud of our work so far, so we wanted to share what we had done. The wording of my previous post painted a false picture of the situation.
