Gay Mexican granted asylum in US

LOS ANGELES -- An immigration judge who previously denied a gay man's asylum bid on the grounds that he could conceal his sexual orientation if he returned to his native Mexico reversed the decision Tuesday.

In allowing Jorge Sota Vega to remain in the United States, Judge John D. Taylor said that gays should not be required to dress or act a certain way to avoid persecution and that Vega's lawyers proved he would be at risk if he were deported to Mexico.

How many Mexicans are gay? How many are good enough actors to pretend they are gay in order to get asylum?

Immigration lawyers across America are now uncorking champaigne bottles.

Wait wtf I'm confused by this story, what happened exactly?

Edit: Nevermind, I reread it and understood, I really need sleep

in case you people don`t know being gay in latinoamerica is awful,so is quite possible that the inmigrant feared for his life when he asked asylum.

That's a broad generalization, it greatly depends on the region. Mexico City is completely modern and liberal in that regard, here the man would not be at risk in any way. In fact, today the first legal gay union in the country took place.

Yeah, this is totally legit. If people are being threatened and/or persecuted for their sexual orientation (as many people are), then it's completely reasonable to offer them asylum.

edit: I should clarify that I obviously don't know enough about this case to say whether or not this particular guy was really in danger, but I certainly agree in principle with the idea of asylum based on sexual orientation.

gay marriage is legal in mexico city. that judge is a retard.

To those mocking this, what is it exactly that you find so objectionable? The terror and violence that some people face on a daily basis? The notion that people who aren't heterosexual actually exist and are persecuted and aren't just fodder for your jokes about Tetsuya Nomura character designs? That people who weren't born in America might, God forbid, want to live here?

i would assume that since the people in mexico city are progressive enough to vote for a law that allows gay marriages.. that they would be accepting of homosexuality.. he didnt need asylum in the states.. he should have moved to mexico city.

That's bullshit. Although gays in mexico aren't exactly embraced openly that is a far cry from any kind of persecution.

Granting asylum is based on political prosecution, otherwise we wouldn't have been able to ship boatloads of Haitians back who come to us asking for asylum.
