GCW Zero - new retrogaming open source handheld!

You have 99$ tablets that have IPS panels, i dunno why a 150$ couldn't.
Unless they just don't make such low resolution ips panels.

interesting device. although the emulation aspects of it sound great, i'm more interested in the indie games that will be made for the system. definitely will keep my eye on this one.

The GCW-Zero seems great, pledged yesterday. Manages to get all the important things right, except for the name (which is cryptic) and the logo (which is boring).

So, just for fun, I made a new logo concept to better reflect and celebrate the games it will play.

Thoughts?

XD I kinda like the pink one.

Also we are at $198,115... I shouldn't have doubted 200,000 k lol

Does anyone know where/how they will be selling these after the Kickstarter is over? I'm pretty interested in it but I'd rather wait until I see some impressions of the final release version. That and more software will probably be available later on.

Well... That and I don't really have the money to spend on this right now.

How does this device stack up against Gameparks GP2X Wiz?

The GP2X Wiz emulates everything (except n64) pretty good and it has an OLED screen.

Zero is far better. Compare specs and controls. And the Wiz had nothing but problems with its OLED going bad.

8x as much RAM, 16x as much on-board storage, same screen resolution, WiFi, video out, no touchscreen, not sure how the CPUs compare.

The most important part is that the GCW is bound to have a much more active development scene due to its status as the unofficial successor to the Dingoo.

Yes they plan to have extras to sell. No idea where from or how much yet, but I'd imagine from the GCW website.

1 day left if anyone still wants to pledge. Now is the time!

It could be a while before you can buy one online, as GCW will be concentrating on producing and shipping the ~1400 KS units over the coming months.

I decided to go for it and pledge. I still have some reservations about emulation quality (listen to X's charged buster shots in Nick Nillo's underwater challenge video), but that can only improve.

The whole point of the kickstarter was too get enough cash upfront to do a reasonably priced manufacturing run. Since he's gone over the target I'd assume the per unit cost will go down and should be able to produce a good few extra devices.

So with my pledges of 160 on two accounts I get

x 2 GCW-Zero Gaming Console
x 2 GCW-Zero Founders T Shirt
x 2 GCW-Zero Glass and Decal
x 2 GCW-Zero Mini USB to USB OTG Adapter
x 2 GCW-Zero Mini HDMI Cable
x 2 GCW-Zero Gaming Pouch

Thats kind of neat! But all I really care about is the Console and its really nice to have a matching pouch!

This baby is beautiful. Mh, they have not shown any photos of the finished white model either. Thinking ill Ebony and Ivory up on these lol

Sure that was not an older comment? Maybe he will just add something in once its all said and done? But the console is all I really want lol. So its at 210,000 now... very impressive.

Posted less than 2 hours ago in the kickstarter comments. But I agree it seems too late. Only 15 hours to go.

in the comments they state:

One of the stretch goals for tomorrow is to raise money for a docking station that will allow for charging of the console but will have 4 powered USB ports on the front to connect different devices such as multiple controllers a mouse/keyboard combo with ports to spare.

seems odd to start adding these like 8 hours before its done? :P

As much as I like free stuff, he should be selling that dock as an accessory. It's too late to add a stretch goal now.

Ok im pledging but im hoping I dont get burned by this in the long run, seeing Golden Sun struggling is worrying. But I guess thats one of the most demanding Game Boy Advanced games out there.

Docking station would be great.

All this extra stuff makes it pretty certain Europeans will have a whacking great customs/import charge added. And for that reason, I'm out.

I'll pick one up at a later date from a local supplier. Plus, the rumblings of cheap alternatives being sold by Chinese sellers on Ablibaba (and probably eBay before too long) doesn't fill me with confidence that Kickstarter is the best deal.

KS almost $220,000 now. O_O

Would of prefered a handgrip as the 4th stretch goal

Hmm, I don't know. At this point I'd rather not see more stretch goal accessories, especially unique ones like a handgrip, because they would have to be designed and manufactured, and I don't want anything holding up shipment of the device itself. Better to introduce such accessories after everyone has received their Zeros IMO. Also, such aftermarket accessories would be a great way for GCW to make some money, and they're a very small, new company so that's important.

I agree, I just want my zero now. And the pouch lol! The pledges are still strong! Can't see how anyone really could go wrong with this device. Secondly for its price I can't see why anyone would want a knock off of this... I mean seriously? Justin made this device to break the trend those handhelds have made. Also all the bonuses are a plus!

I agree on the handgrips. The dock does sound pretty rad, and I admit I am looking forward to hooking this up to a TV and using a Saturn USB pad, but that's going to be a rare usage case. I mean, who wants to plug a retrogaming handheld into a modern TV with HDMI?

Ya, I got the dock for my GP2X and I can probably count the number of times I used it on one hand... Truth is I wouldn't have any interest in this system if it were a retro-gaming console; it's the fact it's a handheld that makes it worthwhile to me...

Anyway, it's too late for additional stretch goals... Now the money's in the hat, lets just get on with getting 'er done! Cool attachments can wait for round two...

I would have thought that I would wake up to the new goal announcement. I'm not even sure what's the point in announcing it if he hasn't done it by now.

TBH, I would assume that number for another goal would be 225,000 right?

Seeing that it is at 221,000 right now that isn't far off with 5hrs to go. But whats the point of announcing it before the end when it's less that 5hrs away? I feel it would be more sensible to announce one at the close. Reason being if they don't make it to 225,000 then no one has to have hurt feelings about it or ask and plead to extend or just to add the additional prizes anyway.

If that even happens that is.

It would pretty much be "we have extra money and we're going to give you something extra as a thank you for supporting us" at this point.

Could The UrQuan Masters(Star Control 2) be ported to this? It's been ported to a few of the other handhelds like this in the past.

Probably, yeah. If it's open source and fits comfortably within the Zero's specs, any port is possible.

KS currently almost $227K with 3 hours to go. Can they hit $230K, putting them $100K over the original goal? I think so!

Clarification about pledges (also added to OP):

BEFORE YOU PLEDGE: keep in mind that each Kickstarter account can only pledge for ONE console (aside from the Developer level which gets 2). So even if you pledge $270 (i.e. $135x2) you will still only receive one Zero. If you want more than one Zero you will need more than one account.
