GCW Zero - new retrogaming open source handheld!

Has anyone heard about anyone getting their unit?

I thought he sent out an Email about units not getting to him until 4/26, at which point he can start flashing them?

It sounds like it's going to be a while.

Unfortunately yeah, I don't see us getting units till the start of may.

I think he just received a small number of units from the manufacturer, so hes flashing those.

Also waiting on OUYA, hopefully I'm happy with these units, if not I don't think ill fund any hardware on KS anymore.

Anyone support that gamestick thing? lol

The units have shipped from China and on their way here. Woo-hoo! All Justin needs to do is, QC them, flash them (but the bootloader isn't done yet), and ship them.

the design is awful. also not sure why would I buy this but I won't anyway.
Thanks for your opinion?

On-topic: I'm a bit concerned about the TV-out and HDMI-out. Justin's not said anything about those recently that I can tell. Is this thing going to ship without the TV-out features?

TV-out requires a new IPU driver for scaling to work. This is the current state of TV-out captured with MPlayer and an analog tv card:

HDMI is not in a working state before the units will be shipped.

Thanks. Where can I see that info? Is that at the Dingoonity forum? I haven't seen any mention of it in the Kickstarter comments. Has Justin said when this might be fixed?

This is not specifically published anywhere outside of the development channels. The developer that was previously working on TV-out is currently fixing the bootloader/highmem issues with the 512MB units.

Interesting. It would be nice if they would talk about this stuff a bit more through Kickstarter updates. Thanks!

We are unable to post updates on Kickstarter ourselves. If you want up to date information, you can join the IRC channel.
Are you involved with the project? And yes, I could hop on IRC, but updates should really be posted to the Kickstarter. I don't see any reason not to. It might help lessen the incidents of people getting ugly about this project in the KS comments and the forums. That said, again, thank you for the information.

Yes, I'm part of the development team. Justin Barwick, the project manager, is the only one that can post Kickstarter updates. For updates we created a new thread at Dingoonity.

SE pre-orders should start shipping as of this coming Tuesday (28/05/2013), and KS orders the week after...so close now!!!

On another note that has been reports that a PSX emulator wouldn't be able to run on this device....i would have thought it would of been powerful enough especially consider that the screen is low res??

Powerful enough? It probably is, at least for 2d games. Even when there's a possibility that doesn't mean much unless someone is interested in doing it.

I ordered a Gemei A330 and I'm going to wait for PS1/N64 emulation to be on acceptable levels on the GCW Zero to buy one.

(because if it can only play Snes, GBA, Nes, Neo Geo, etc games, why should I buy this thing now instead of the 50 US$ gemei?)

Potentially both N64 and PSX emulation will be fullspeed on this device. Currently developers are solving core issues instead of working on emulators. We attracted developers like Zodttd to work on ports. There is a non optimized PSX emulator available ported from the Dingoo a320.

I don't think the A330 runs dingux (Linux) so you might be stuck with the native emulators which aren't as good.

Pricing up on FB:

We are releasing official pricing for http://gcw-zero.com/ (official website) as follows:

$150.00 plus $10.00 shipping in the USA.
$150.00 plus $25.00 shipping for overseas.

Other resellers will sell the hardware for prices ranging between $150 to $170.00 plus shipping.

In the meantime we are busy flashing and shipping the Special Edition units. The Kickstarter units will soon follow. The specific date retail units will be available is still to be determined.

Also, Ithic.com (one of their resellers) lists that all preorders from their site will ship by 6/15.

Yep, not long until we can try it out.
By not long you mean 3 more months?

I really regret backing this. It's almost 4 months late with no end in sight.

It took them two weeks to flash and send a few units, how will they cope with 1400 units?

I don't regret backing it but yeah, this is really disappointing.

I kinda expected this. Their timeline was ambitious. I really assumed it would be several months later.

At this point we'll be lucky to get it before november.

That's ridiculous, no business would survive such a situation. They have the money so they can take their sweet time and we can do fuck all about it.

Ya it sucks, but it really is the nature of Kickstarter. You're paying up front for most likely a new business which likely has little experience to get something that you may or may never get because there's no guarantee. Kickstarter is not a store.

It's one guy doing all this in his spare time... I think you should cut him some slack.
I really appreciate all his hard work and am still looking forward to receiving my unit.

Yeah it seems like it's one guy flashing and shipping out a half dozen a day whenever he gets around to it with a constant stream of excuses about why the people who were supposed to help him can't.

Some thoughts from someone who received their SE device including lots of pics:
http://obscurehandhelds.com/?p=2182
I just now noticed how especially close the B button is to the Select button.

About the controls:
The buttons in general feel good. The analog stick is smooth and easy to grip, the shoulder buttons are an improvement over the ones used in the Gemei A330 (a device with a very similar case mould to this) and the ABXY buttons have a very pronounced click as you depress them.
Some people have mentioned a problem with the dpad down. I can confirm that the problem exists on my unit as well, sometimes requiring 2 or 3 presses before it registers. I am told that with some use this will probably sort itself out, I’ll have to wait and see.

About the UI:
At the moment it’s functional but it doesn’t look pretty and does crash once in a while.

The thing looks pretty rad. I'll wait until the next wave/2014 (if it lasts that long) and see what kinda shape it's in by then. Otherwise I will just skip it, but I do get the feeling that it's likely the last time we'll see a device of quite this caliber (err, potential caliber)

Last such thing I bought was a gp32 lo those many years ago. Its not aged too well, but quite a blast in its day :)

Hell if I could find one in good shape, would probably shell out to buy a gp32 Blu right now-

The review on Obscure Handhelds was partly inaccurate. The system didn't crash, the applications did and the guy incorrectly configured his wireless connection.

A comment from the review page addresses this:

1) You mentioned the system crashes once in a while. Can you report when does it happen? OD is very stable and we never had any crashes during the development, so it would help us if we could localize your issues.
Unless you mean some games crashing. Then it’s enough to press power + select to kill a currently running game and get back to the menu. But naturally that has nothing to do with OpenDingux.

2) You mentioned that WIFI isn’t working, while this is not true. WIFI is fully functional, if it doesn’t connect to your access-point then most likely you messed up the network settings. Feel free to join us on our irc (details on gcw-zero.com) if you need any help regarding WIFI configuration or any other help with your GCW Zero.
