GCW Zero - new retrogaming open source handheld!

So, I still have no tracking number or anything.

Not as excited for this as I was. Been a long time, and lots of other things have my interest now. But I'm still curious to try mine out when it (ever) arrives.

Yea, right now im kind of wishing I would have invested in the Shield instead.

The guy being at pax prime worked out great for me. Any backer at PAX who hadn't got their system yet could get theirs.

He probably needs the $20 he saved from not having to ship mine. But I'm glad I finally got it.

D-pad and screen are awesome. Nub is cheap and crappy but I won't be using that much anyway. It comes pre loaded with some software. I've tried a few of them. There is a monkey one designed like a gameboy game green screen and all that is actually a lot of fun. I can't wait to put SNES games on it.

WTF is this shit?

Nah, the Shield is large, bulky, and pricey.

I don't need it to be actually portable, though. And it does a lot more. I'm interested in the PC streaming.

Maybe I'll change my mind when I actually get a hold of my Zero. Hopefully there are no more trade shows Justin needs to attend until he's actually shipped all of the units.

EDIT: I forget, did you back this? If so, I guess you haven't received yours either?

I'm jelly.

Still don't have a tracking number for mine yet.

So he was at PAX instead of working on getting everything shipped out to the people who already paid him?

Oh well, at least more people got their systems.

Well he probably booked the booth months ago planning on having them done already. Doesn't excuse him taking forever doing it all by himself. He's never going to get to a point where he can start selling them online at this rate.

Ah, I figured there were a lot better options out there if you didn't care about portability. The form factor/size is what kind of interested me. The PC streaming of the Shield is certainly interesting, but too bad it only works with Nvidia cards.

I did end up backing this after being a bit reserved, but I figured the price point was cheap enough to just give it a go. I expected delays, and was pretty okay with not having it, but man him just handing them out to people at PAX is pretty damn annoying. Ya, I haven't received it nor got a tracking number. I expect to have a PS4 and Xbone before I get this. I blame Vitacat. =)

this device has a pixelperfect screen and (hopefully) a lively scene of homebrew/emulator software being constantly developed, like the Dingoo has as this ones predecessor.

I'm glad I got mine at pax. I was freaking out when he said he was shipping via FedEx. I was not looking forward to the brokerage bill.

But now I don't have to pay anything since I'll be well under the tax free spending limit coming home.

Him going to Conventions is dumb since he is nowhere near a point where he can start selling them commercially. He is never going to get there at the rate he is going.

Oh well, it worked out for me.

Should have asked you to pick up mine and send it to me :p (you're in Montreal right?)

If the guy was giving them out at PAX, it makes me wonder if people could just drive over to his house and pick one up if they live nearby.

Think I'm done backing devices. Backed Might No.9 and Shantay (indiegogo Skullgirls too) but I'm done with the physical. This whole thing has been a train wreck...

I just wanted to play MMX 1-3 portable without frameskips and on small device that emulates snes perfectly. Bah...

Agreed.

For now on, I'm only backing KSs that actually are run by people who have actual business experience, like Kaiju Combat and Mighty No. 9.

This is just disgraceful.

At this point, I'm thinking about contacting my credit card company to see if it is possible to get what I paid to Kickstarter back. This is a joke now.

Okay so I played the first level of Super Star Wars on this thing. Game play is perfect but sound is a tad off. I didn't adjust any settings or fool around with any menus so I don't know if that's expected or if sound is never right or what or I can adjust something to fix it what.

Framerate was solid, and the D-Pad worked like a charm.

At this point, it's essentially a scam.

Get your money back. A hundred quid/bucks is more than enough to get pissed off over.

Can someone help me set this thing up that knows this stuff better then I do?

For example, the Duke Nukem OPK is less then 1mb so clearly it's not the full game and I need to use that in conjunction with the actual game. I found a youtube video saying "buy it on GOG" which I have no problem doing but is there a specific directory I need to put it in or something?

You can buy Duke Nuken here:

Sorry meant Duke Nukem 3D not the original Sidescroller(s).

I know I need a DRM free version which I can get from GOG, but what do I do with it when I get it?

Never mind, found it here

Edit: Okay still can't get it to work. Man I suck at this stuff.

I tried the linked demo and it worked. I copied the two files, DUKE3D.GRP and DUKE.RTS, to /data/local/home/.eduke32.

Okay so I need them on the internal memory of the Zero or will it still work fine on my Micro SD card?

Edit, I figured out how to use a FTP program to put files on the internal storage. But assigning buttons was an issue. It didn't seem to recognize the nub and I tried remapping with the D-Pad but I couldn't assign certain buttons commands. For example it wouldn't let me assign a command to the B button as all it did was back me out of the assign button menu.

Let us know if you do it and it works. Im thinking about doing the same thing. I have a galaxy s4, so im fine with emulators for now and dont really need the gcw anymore. And i could use that $130 to pay for some games coming out soon.

For some reason the nub worked when I first loaded the demo, but subsequently it did not. Under Options -> Keyboard Setup if you scroll down there's an option to Set Key Layout #2 A320 Style which make the dpad work for movement, but you then can't walk and aim, Y is the aim modifier.

There is a bug in the joystick driver at the moment where it might not get recognized. As a workaround, try restarting the game a few times.
Hopefully it's fixed soon.

seriously.. that dude needs to get a few days off work and just get the shit done.

He apparently had time to pack up my case that I ordered, and ship that separately from the system. :/

(A system I still haven't heard a peep about.... No tracking, no status update, nothing.... )
