GCW Zero - new retrogaming open source handheld!

If customs opened a parcel that they suspected of being fraudulent and found an invoice in there for more would be one way of getting done, also they aren't retards I suspect they would guess a games console isn't going to cost under 40 pounds. Anyway I import quite a lot of music and there have been instances where I was charged and others where I wasn't.

I have no idea if you can pay the vat up front for small batches of imports, but it might be worth looking into. Often companies avoid it by importing into an EU country in one go then distributing from there so the end user doesn't have to pay the extra.

Easily.

As much as the site sucks, gbatemp would have helped with their features and articles on it.

Yeah, lots of sites have just ignored the GCW Zero. I have no idea why, especially the gadget sites. It's a gadget... right?

But to heck with 'em. Looks like it'll succeed anyway.

Over $102, 000 now. :-)

The kickstarter has been going very well (almost $108,000 now!) and is probably going to exceed the initial $130,000 goal.
Pledge for your own GCW Zero and let's get some extras with these stretch goals!

Fuck, I just want that pouch...

Oh and I did a little video hoping some other emulator happy people will support the GCW... running some snes games on my phone, and then on my PSP.

Its great that the android can support such devices, but still who wants to do the whole bluetooth controller deal? And the PSP only has 333 over clocked ram... so there are huge limits on what it can do...

Anyway, after backing two devices I'm done for now... I loved that podcast interview! The whole idea for an appstore and having this as a pocket computer is just super awesome!!!

Looks interesting, but don't see a need to replace my Caanoo.

Whatever happened to the Pandora? Did it sell well, or die? Haven't heard anything about it for a long time.

It's a bit complicated. There were two guys with their own web stores making and selling Pandora. One from Germany (Evildragon, Michael Mrozek) and one from England (Craigix, Craig Rothwell).

Craigs Store is really struggling with debt and unfulfilled orders right now and he has pretty much given up on Pandora (while the whole project was majorly screwed by suppliers most feel he made it worse by not communicating with the community enough). EvilDragon however has managed (by a truly herculean effort) to take over and save Pandora production and is both still making Pandoras and selling them in his store. They seem to sell ok (he just stated he sells around 4-5 per day) and he is able to deliver to all people who ordered from him:

The community is small but dedicated and it's still going strong with new software released almost every day:

How noob friendly is this going to be? I don't really know much about the Homebrew scene. How hard is it going to be to get games up and running? Will stuff "just work" or will each game need some special configuring/attention?

Also will any special PC software be needed to communicate with the handheld or is the file system just drag and drop (I'm on a Mac)?

It should mostly "just work." Most configuration type stuff (i.e. emulator settings) can be done from within the program menus. Just like any other app on any other system. As I don't actually have a Zero, I can't really comment in any depth. But based upon the videos and the GCW FAQ, that's how it looks.

I don't know about using it with Mac, sorry. Try asking on the Kickstarter page, or in the #GCW IRC channel.

UPDATE: I asked on IRC for you. " I guarantee you no special software will be needed... from ftp, to samba and usb mass storage"
UPDATE 2: "note: mass storage does not work right now. ftp can be done via ethernet usb or wifi"

So basically we'll be able to transfer files wirelessly. See here for how it's done on Mac: http://osxdaily.com/2011/02/07/ftp-from-mac/

ALSO: note you can always simply drag and drop using an SD card as well.

Thanks for the reply. I'll try asking around.

Very cool. That makes the prospect of using HDMI out much cooler.

Definitely. In theory we should be able to hook the Zero up to a TV/monitor, attach a KB/mouse, and use it as a computer. Run a retro computer emulator (i.e. C64, Amiga etc.) and you can have full out computer emulation. Not to mention using game controllers etc.

KS is now over $115, 000! In about a day or 2 it will probably reach the goal. :-)

Ooh, nice. Joystiq posted about the GCW Zero!

http://www.joystiq.com/2013/01/21/gcw-zero-open-source-handheld-needs-a-kickstart/

Shame about some of the remarkably ignorant comments. It's so obvious some of those guys didn't even look at the specs.

Damn no kidding... Im trying to keep my cool here and explain and link videos and change peoples minds, im KoKuTanLuFi whos commenting on this page. But yeah people kinda just speak based on product looks.......... before doing investigative work, even if at all...

Just tried playing some Super Metroid on the PSP and its a no go, lags like hell and frameskip is horrible.

I hope the GCW Zero can emulate it without a problem, im so close to backing, im just not convinced about the perceived quality of the device.

Super Metroid already works great on the Zero. See here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGHlt1gR02U

Also remember these are very early days for the Zero. As good as the emulators and game ports already are, they will only continue to get better. The devs are continuously working on tweaking and optimizing the Zero and its software. And unlike the PSP, the Zero's dev community is alive and growing. Not to mention that the Zero's CPU runs at 3x the speed of the PSP's fastest clock, and it has 16x the RAM. Plus the retro res screen means no wasted processing cycles on scaling most of the time.

So I transferred some money to my Paypal account but it won't be on it until the day after the kickstarter ends. Fuck.

Is there an official site for the device where I can purchase it?

Not yet. KS only right now. But at some point I'm sure they will setup a store to buy them directly online. Might be a long wait though, as they will be very busy manufacturing and shipping hundreds of Zeros to KS backers over the next few months.

Also, see the OP for their official homepage. If/when they start selling them directly, that would be the place to look.

Damn you are the devil, im so tempted, anyone knows if you can map stuff like Save state to the stick? at least in the SNES Emu.

I don't know if that particular button mapping is offered. But there should definitely be savestate in most, if not all, the emulators for the Zero.

For those sorts of detailed questions, you should try to ask in the #gcw irc channel, or ask one of the guys putting up the Zero videos on youtube. I don't own a Zero yet. Waiting like all the other KS backers for mine. :-)

Holy moly, KS is over $118,000 right now. I was thinking they'd make goal on Wed, but now I'm thinking maybe tomorrow.

Wow the timing of this could not have been better for me. I only got my account activated two days ago, and only opened the site while in the deepest darkest depths of procrastination... And yet, in that small window I happened to find this thread for the exact kind of handheld I've been looking for these past few months!

Backed.

I can't wait to see the PSone emulation in action.

Welcome to NeoGAF, J.Edge, and welcome to the GCW Zero club!

KS is over 119k now!

Seems strange that the AB buttons are in the Nintendo layout (right to left) and XY are the opposite
I dont understand this either - has it been explained?

Also, I think it would be better to have the START button above SELECT, thats how it is on the GBA/DS Lite/DSi and it makes the most sense when you want to pause a game. Is there a reason SELECT is above START? (Also there would be less chance of accidental presses if the start/select buttons were slightly lower down and perhaps a bit smaller)

Yes these are minor nitpicks...but it just bugs me!

those layouts are probably patented by Nintendo :D atleast the Sony dpad was if i remember correctly

Whoa, already 120,000! Yeah maybe by early morning tomorrow? This is amazing =D I mean for only 20 days right? Anyone know why he only had 20 days?

Doess anybody know how big the production run is going to be?

I can't believe they with this amount of money they're only going to get less than 1000 made.

I asked GCW on IRC earlier about that, and he plans to make more than just the KS orders. I don't know the total number, and he may still be deciding that.

KS is now over $123K! Less than 7K to go!

I would be very suprised if you saw decent ps1 emulation on it anytime soon.

A comment on this page,*Click*, by a tester mentioned on Kickstarter says it already does PS1 emulation (though no videos from what I can tell). Gotta be a good amount of work done on it already I'd imagine. Can't find anything on N64. If any system is late to the emulation I think it will be N64.

Apparently there was a video of a PS1 emulator on the Zero at some point running SOTN. But I haven't seen it. I'm pretty sure PS1 emulation is still very early on the Zero though. And I don't think N64 has been started yet by anyone.
