Gears 5 Adds Weak Point Mechanics, Lowest Difficulty Has Lock-On Aim

Enemies will also have health bars to help players assess their risks as per The Coalition.

The Coalition didn't stray too far from the standard formula with Gears of War 4. Yes, it featured a new cast and took place several years after the third game but it still felt pretty routine for the most part. With Gears 5, the development team is looking to take more risks.

Speaking to Kotaku at E3 2019, studio head Rod Fergusson talked about the process behind the fourth game. "We really went out going, 'Okay, we're going to stay true to what Gears is, and [not] mess with it too much.' We really didn't want people going, 'Well they don't know what they're doing.' And what we got instead was like, 'There's not enough innovation here.' We sort of took that feedback about, 'We trust you, please go push it.' And so we really brought that to Gears 5."

That means a number of changes, from the seemingly minor – chainsaw bayonet kills are now activated by holding down the Right Bumper instead of B for better camera manipulation – to the major, like health bars on enemies. The latter is important because Fergusson believes it will help players decide when to risk taking down weaker enemies. They can be disabled though.

Another interesting change is the focus on headshots and weak points, to the point where the reticle will change colours accordingly (white for body shots, red for headshots and gold after a perfect reload). The names of difficulty settings for the series have also been changed – instead of Casual/Normal/Hardcore/Insane, they're now Beginner/Intermediate/Experienced/Insane. At the lowest difficulty, players will be able to lock on to enemies, a first for the series.

Gears 5 is out on September 10th for Xbox One and Windows 10 PC. More details on the Versus mode Arcade will be coming next month followed by Horde details at Gamescom in August. Campaign footage will be showcased before the game's launch in September. We already know that it won't have a Season Pass or Gear Packs. Instead, store purchases can be done directly and without any RNG involved.

A focus on headshots and weak points sounds good to me.

Hopefully its more than just headshots though and certain enemies need to be hit in specific parts like certain limbs etc.

Really curious to see how this game turns out. These changes sound good and I'm glad that the wave based stuff in the campaign won't be returning either.

Why do most MS first party games have a casual baby mode...... and most times it's the default option......Forza, now Gears etc....

Weak point mechanics? Is this going to be their Horizon?

I'd compare it to 007 Everything or nothing first. That's quite a reach comparing Gears and Horizon...

I felt a bit dissapointed with Gears 4 for PC. To the point that I prefered to uninstall it to save some space for other games (110 GB or so!). Will look at this game closely. I'm hopeful.

First thing I'll be doing is disabling the health bars, might sound dumb but in the old games after a couple levels I got a hang of how many bullets each enemy took. Was satisfying as hell to let go of the trigger at the perfect time.

Do too many options scare you or something?
Oh no! Accessibility!
No they don't, as a matter of fact, if people want a "let the game play itself mode" it won't bother me, just don't make it the default mode of play......

It also leads me to believe that people cry too much nowadays for a little challenge in their games, some people don't even want to spend sometime to learn the controls of a game or it's mechanics, some people just want a win button......I'm not sure these type of persons are who you should be targeting with your games, they won't buy many games or play much anyway...….Soon, we will see a Ninja poodle mode for grandma's to gain accessibility in Ninja Gaiden………..

I thought the head was always the weak point?
Have you ever fought a brumak? For them its usually their mounted guns and the fuel tank on their back. Or what about the sera centipede? Their weakspot is their tail.

Im pretty sure normal is still default as it has been since gears 2.

I'm in this weird position where I think it's completely cool that they do this while being willing to go to the mat arguing that a game like Sekiro shouldn't have one.

I mostly meant that there were weakpoints in the original game, it's not really an original concept.

Thats a very specific example though. As a shooter one would expect body damage is seperate from headshots, but from gears 2 and going forward they added enemies that have specific weakspots (in gears 3 for example, the lambant had yellow pulsating blotches as their weakspots.)

Gears 4 was cool but only because I played it in coop. Honestly as a solo game I would go as far as call the gameplay average as hell. Hopefully this will improve more. "Staying true" to the franchise is okay but sometimes you just have to change things but these changes are meaningless for the average gamer/fan.

Theres still a general sweet spot in terms of going for new and tried and true.

For experimental: We dont need another judgement afterall...

Yes I know, like I said, I only meant to point out that the idea of weakpoints isnt new to this franchise. Kinda strange to act like it's a new feature?
