Gears of War 2: Should I bother or just skip it?

Vanillalite

Ask me about the GAF Notebook
So I got the original Gears day 1 as it was one of my most anticipated games at the time, and some of my buddies really wanted to play co-op campaign. Had fun with the SP/CP, and sort of enjoyed the MP but eventually fell away because of the lag, host advantage, and various glitches.

I can't remember why, but I was just busy with other games and life stuff when Gears 2 hit so I never went in. Then I kept hearing all the negative feelings post launch, and so I just sort of stayed away. Now with Gears 3 coming I'm sort of hyped again, and it makes me wonder if I should go back and play Gears 2. It appears you can get a GOTY addition for $20 new or you can get a used copy even cheaper on the ebay or at the GS/EB. Thing is at this point I'd probably end up just skipping the MP anyways so I'm not sure that the DLC would even matter much.

Do I bother going back GAF? Even if it's cheap do I spend my time or just skip it, read the wiki, and wait for 3 to drop? Would I really be missing much not playing 2 or is the SP campaign worth the romp?

The campaign is great, more so if played with a friend.

Horde mode also is a blast to play, and now there are tons of maps.

That's enough I guess, even if you don't touch the mp, given the actual price of the game.

lots of vehicle sections really destroy the cohesive flow the first game had, but it's still a pretty fun romp to play the campaign with a buddy

Single player is better than 1, although the multiplayer is 'different', it's still alot better than what it was at launch.

If you can, play single player in co-op, makes it a lot more fun. There are some pretty cool set pieces throughout the game which need to be played as well.

I bought the GOTY edition two weeks ago or so and played through campaign with a friend over live. It's definitely much more fun with a friend and I have to agree that the vehicle sections mess with the flow of the campaign. However, it's worth it if you can play campaign/horde mode with a friend like I have.

As others have said, the campaign is really good. The mp launched broken but after 6 title updates its pretty good now, it just has a very steep learning curve.

I'd say give it a try. You can find it for under $20 and the campaign is pretty fun and has a good length to it. I love the Gears sp campaign but never really got into the mp. The story is okay. They definitely tried to have a better story in part 2 but I don't really think it's anything special.

The campaign is fun for the most part. They tried to throw in some stuff to break up all the shooting, but I think most of those things actually hurt the game. It's still worth getting, especially if you can play it co-op.

Very much worth 20 bucks. SP is awesome, and MP is much better than launch. No reason to pass it up. Plus it will warm you up for the GeOW3 Beta coming soon.

Wasn't a big fan of 1 but I did enjoy 2 a bunch.

If it's going for cheap then definitely pick it up especially if you're hyped for 3.

1.) If you loved Gears 1 and liked the campaign, there's absolutely no reason not to get Gears 2 (especially since you get it for like $10-15). Campaign is even better.

2.) The "problems" post launch are all fixed, and the game is better than ever. It was only some multiplayer issues, nothing to do with single player.

3.) Why play a 3rd game in a trilogy after skipping the 2nd? Makes no sense.

4.) The above 3 reasons, again.

I'd play the 3rd for MP and not for the SP if they fix the glitches and mp lag issues. So I'd get it for competitive MP + Horde and the SP/CP would just be a bonus.

I loved the Gears campaign because there were so many enjoyable firefights with a heavy emphasis on tactical gunplay, particularly in co-op.

I hated the Gears 2 campaign because it de-emphasized the individual firefights, added more of the crappy vehicle sections, added more of the crappy story and storytelling, and generally felt like it was a bunch of gimmick set pieces. I am in the distinct minority on this.

The only thing I liked about the Gears 2 campaign was that they did an awesome job cleaning up the mechanics.

Yes, but I was referring specifically to the OP, who said he liked Gears for the campaign and co-op, not really for the multiplayer.

Oh, you're the OP. I don't always look at the avatars.

Well, I don't get where you go from enjoying the SP in Gears 1, and being ok with the multiplayer to getting Gears 3 for the multiplayer...

I can't make that connection there.
