Gears of War 4 - Launch trailer

are you talking MP in 4 or the earlier games? Don't bother with the earlier games just do the story mode first. Start fresh mp in #4. If you do want to try MP, try it in Gears3 thats the closest to 4 game style wise. And for god sakes stay away from Judgement Multiplayer. Just trust me.

There's less than 150 people online for Judgement MP. If I recall 3 has more active players.

I heard bad things that happen to newcomers to Gears MP. But hey, I'll try it out and I'll definitely play the horde mode.

Btw. Can yo play online without Gold on PC?

I keep forgetting that Judgement even exists.

You don't need Gold for PC.

Gears multiplayer is pretty competitive so it might take a while to learn the ropes. The gameplay style is a lot different than in the campaign.

Gears 4 has vs Bots if you want to start off in MP. Also there are placement matches so we pool you with people of the correct skill and rating. Something past Gears games didn't do.

Am I the only one that thought the trailer immediately took a dive once they showed gameplay. Something about the enemy types just really isn't doing it for me.

my advice would be try and shadow people. If you try and go one on one you'll probably get destroyed and frustrated (and that's not a knock, just some of the people who play this are savage). If you can stick with someone though and work as a team you'll do well. Teams that work together will usually win because it's very hard to break down two or three people even if you're really good.

I know you said you were looking into it, but was it confirmed whether cross-play for private versus was going to be in?

I actually love the look of the new enemies. The pouncher might be favourite monster design in the entire franchise.

I'd take the juvies over the wretches as well. I think they've outdone Epic... just my opinion though.

From what I noticed, it does. Never hard to get a match of Horde mode going which has been a great way to warm up a bit.

Beat Gears 1 on PC in anticipation, still just incredibly happy about all the coop options that 4 has.

I agree, this looks like a better game than Epic's previous work. Even looking at Halo 5 (campaign), I think this is the first time MS has revamped a franchise and nailed it.

yeah juvies, are a sight to behold, much more frightening that the monkey dogs

Man, do you remember crabwalking in Gears 1? Thinking back over Gears MP history is bringing up some old memories.

LOL. Ranked matches when the host is on your team sure were funny. There's ALWAYS one guy in a full party game, messing shit up with crabwalking, superjumps or worse, completely kung-fu flipping out of the map that you don't know where the last man standing is and it's a PITA in maps like Tyro, Mansion, Fuel Depot, Bullet Marsh etc where they specifically target wide areas with bigger maps/unused assets to jump out of, so that it's really hard for the remaining players in the opposition team to K-flip out themselves and track him down. But I digress, kung-fu flipping out of the map with a party full of friends in private player matches sure was a lot of fun and a time sucker.

In player matches, if it's a full lobby on gridlock with weapon swaps, you'd regularly see that one guy trying to skydive with one of his friends/guest-tags smoke tagging him behind that van. I mostly wait for that "bump" when he's about to go up in the air (vanish) and tag him a frag so that both the guys explode on the van while waling to the slide during glitch. It kills them and cancels the glitch which has to be done again for the next 2 minutes. Would feel so good. XD

Hah that and the SUPER JUMP and Weapon sliding.

Super jump is indeed game breaking but weapon slides are good at high level play. Of all the "glitches" as we call them, weapon slide is the only one where competitive edge is pushed, doesn't affect game balance and completely takes away all those cheap headshots/insta-gibs all because of the pickup animation. Again, adding i-frames to pickup animations are not a worthy alternative (not to mention the conundrum of figuring out how much milliseconds those last) when you have something like weapon slides, which is far superior at your disposal. The only problem is that weapon slides (as it is written in UE3 and it's currentgen revision) require "at least" a tiny bit of latency (doesn't matter if it's under even 5 ms). But it isn't rocket science to change it into a complete animation of it's own on UE4, especially for the folks at Coalition.

Gears indeed has a steep learning curve mechanically, let alone advanced gameplay. Don't let that scare you though. Gears 3 has the most newcomer friendly MP in the entire series, compared to the original having the highest skill ceiling. 4 is really close to 3 mechanically (damage+cms+camera+hitbox accuracy/spread/bloom etc), and balances things out using other things like map control and weapon placements (both symmetrical & asymmetrical) with a competitive focus. Play for a couple of weeks, tops, to get yourself in the zone (no pun intended).

And yes, you can play w/o XBL GOLD on PC, including X-Play with Xbox One in Co-op playlists and private versus with your friends. Only the Xbox One version requires XBL GOLD to play online MP/Co-op.

Gameplay hasn't changed one bit since 1st gears and that was 10 years ago, hell, even HUD is the same. Picked it up for 26 bucks which I think is a fair price, 60 not so much.

I'm hoping the single player is good (and similar to 1's feel and atmosphere). I'm considering picking this up but mainly for the SP. I have too many MP titles that I'm juggling as it is that that aspect is a bit of a wash for me.

I didn't know about the different balances for mp playlists. I like the idea.

Just curious which is the playlist for my gow 1 weapon sliding, wall bouncing close range torque, gnasher, noscope active longshot, boltok bros?

Game looks so good.

Nah. Cole train has always been there for the comic relief. I mean they could kill him and people are not gonna like it. But if you kill a character there must be some emotional bond to it. Dont think Cole is the character for that. Dont think they will kill Marcus also. That will piss off alot of people. If they want to get slowly get rid of him in the future and focus on JD there are alot of other ways to do that. Think Marcus will get injured in GoW 4. Creates that bonding moment between him and JD.

Don't worry, they'll make a Carmine to kill. Marcus, nor Cole have to take the hit. Besides, old man Death deserves a soul after he spared Clayton's life in Gears 3.

While it might feel like we have seen a fair bit of the game, I don't think we've seen much of the campaign at all.

We've only been shown the abandoned village (and flashes of a couple of other locations).

I wonder how diverse it'll be?

We've only got 24 hours to work with, so I can't imagine it'll be Uncharted 2-levels of environmental variety, but I'm sure there's plenty of other locations.

I can't thank you and your team enough for including this feature.

I'm assuming if you play with bots, you can do so offline?

You can. Splitscreen, LAN with 4 other X1's and LAN with PC in private versus X-Play (don't quote me on this as I'm just assuming LAN X1/PC is supported because private versus X-Play is).

Going by Gears tradition, the campaign will be split into 5 ACTS with around 5+ chapters in each ACT unless they've changed it this time. Also, the games dont just abruptly end an area just because an ACT's over. They slowly transition to newer locations through chapters, as it gives more depth to the campaign by travelling with the characters, even if it is in the succeeding ACTS.

Since the total timeframe of events happening is closer to 1 than, 2 or 3, I'd think probably 5 diverse areas at least.

We've seen two of those in trailers already. The starting area (the COG stronghold and outsiders camp which get attacked by swarm and Kait's mom killed) and Marcus' farm being attacked by DB's. I wouldn't be surprised if they have a throwback level like what Metal Gear 4 did with Shadow Moses (revisiting some GeOW 1 landmarks or probably Jacinto? Maybe). Finishing off with a completely new area not even hinted in the trailers (like what Azura was to GeOW 3) and the Swarm fortress/stronghold where we take out the final boss or that dude who looks like a grenadier elite, if he is this game's RAAM.

Just let Marcus rest after his contributions in this one. He's earned it.

Yeah, sure. Just like Master Chief earned his rest in Halo 4. Hint: Marcus is the poster child (no pun intended) of Gears of War. He's going nowhere.

By virtue of him not being the main playable character, it's already plenty of steps removed from a comparison to Halo. It wouldn't make a huge marketing change to not have had him in. Hell, pretty sure one of those first trailers just implied he was dead.

Plenty of steps? Or maybe just 3
