Gears of War graphics modified from an unoptimized pre-release build? I'm scared!

yeah yeah yeah, the game is ****ing gorgeous. i am not disputing that. it is far and away the best game i've ever seen. by miles.

however, if i'm not mistaken, it has seen a downgrade in at least one aspect from older builds...

a few e3's ago, MS demo'd the night stage in which marcus follows a burning car down a hill to stay in the light. this is the same stage with the gas station. in that old build, you can clearly see that the flames from the car dynamically lit up the environment. as the car creeped closer to coloumns in the building for example, shadows would cast against the building and shrink or enlarge depending on the angle of the light. this isnt there in the shipped game. also, when the night rain stage was first demo'd, in the opening cutscene to that stage, the cogs casted long shadows from the headlights that are, again, missing.

are the environments no longer globally illuminated?

OMG downgrade total! just thought it was worth pointing out. and please, no ban, i backed my statement up. ;)

it IS NOT ban worthy, or shouldnt be. you can claim downgraded if you have evidence to back it up. shit guys, the game is gorgeous, i just thought this was worth talking about. yesh.

This thread is just garbage flamebait period. I don't care about "downgrade" or whatever, but seriously, use some sense.
 
Its probably worth discussing on some level (if true, my wait to play Gears continues and I haven't seen said footage anyway), but I don't think the 'loud' thread title really helps. I doubt most read your post after reading the title, really.

Well, they removed the realtime shadows, yes. So the lighting on the environments is all pre-calculated. But it's possible that while baking this lighting they still do some GI... not sure.

What exactly is there to discuss? The lighting is less then it was, this is true.

And...? Where is the discussion? There is no counter point, there is initial point for f*ck sake. There is no discussion here.
 
I remember the same part, I also remember the 5fps as well.... if they had to reduce some visuals so be it,

it was a good choice.
 
The impression I'm getting is that if someone mentioned this in the official thread in passing without saying "downgrade", everything would be fine and well.

Am I right, here?

It doesn't dynamically shadow the environment...atleast not the implementation in Gears.

Honestly I'm not all that upset about it. The shadows that were cast in pre-release demos were razor sharp, and simply didn't look realistic. The fact that they are missing doesn't bum me out at all. The slightly dithered self shadows are a bit more of a downer to me, though I still don't really care.
