Gears of War is a masterpiece

One of the very few games this gen I just couldn't finish.. it's just so cliche with no reward for skill. And muddy. RE5 has the best co-op of this gen, but I'd be willing to concede the game had good mp if it wasn't for the netcode.

Best co-op experiences I had this gen came from a pretty flawed game - Lost Planet 2

Another Capcom game. I'd believe it. Didn't play it myself but Capcom knows co-op like the back of their hand.

It's weird, I was just at PAX with my brother looking at Judgment and we were both kind of like "man, what happened to Gears? The first one was so amazing and then they just went downhill with the series"...

I don't like very many modern shooters... well, pretty much just Uncharted... but I always imagined I would enjoy Gears. If I had an Xbox I'd certainly give it a shot.

First game had that atmosphere that was never matched. The other two games were like action movies in comparison. There was never that sense of desperation.

Worst thing that happened was party chat, actually. Gears 1's system of being able to talk with squadmates when alive, then being kicked into a spectator lobby that filled with people as they died and just shooting the shit and cracking on the latest victim's death was perfect. Gears' gameplay and tension was wholly dependent on not being able to have other people scout from the grave, that Gears was never as good as it was during 1 is very closely tied to the fact that Gears 2 came out right alongside the dashboard update that added party chat.

Party chat is pretty much why I cancelled Xbox Live. It destroyed the only good thing about that service.

If they remade this game for Durango, but implemented Gears 3's fluidity and fixed the net code, I'd lose my shit.

All the sounds are better. They are heavier, louder and have more power behind them. Everything about that game is brutal and raw

Lancer so much better. Gnasher so much better.

PXG how could you possibly stand the gears netcode? It's intolerable

Great game and now I want to replay it but I don't have a 360 anymore. Did anyone buy it on PC? Its still up on Microsofts store for $20 and I'm thinking about purchasing it.

I'm gonna have to disagree with pretty much everything. Tried the campaign a few yeas ago and lost interest less than 30 minutes into it. It felt like a poor man's RE4. The cover mechanic would've been interesting if only it didn't make every battle feel exactly the same

I think the most disappointing thing about the sequels for me was the quality of the maps. In Gears 1 there wasn't a single map I disliked. Gears 2 and 3 both have some serious stinkers

Gears 1 is the reason I got my tag because I was so excited to play it. It really did feel like the first next-gen game at the time. Good OP.

Easily the best gears campaign to date. I liked how gritty it was. Gears 2 and 3 had too much color.

Hahaha, I'm going to take your post back to 2008 and see what GAFfers think of it =P

Deffinetly disagree with that. I thought the single and multiplayer modes were boring.

I can't nod in agreement hard enough OP. It's a design masterclass.

They can just throw a load of their wonderful set of enemies into a nicely designed combat bowl, and it's instant shooter nirvana.
I'm struggling to resist the temptation to break down all the amazing design touches and brilliant enemy behaviours, but I guess it's been covered.

I love this franchise.

This is what I've been asking for since Gears 2 was announced. This is what I figured Gears 2 would be (boy was I wrong), and that's why it hurts so much.
Even if the game was MP only, I'd pay $60 dollars. Hell, I'd pay $100 in a heartbeat, because I would play it til the end of time.

To this day I still believe that Gears 2 does not have a single good map. The Gears PC remakes don't count.
If anyone says Pavilion I will punch them in the face via fax.

I bought my 360 just for this game, is fucking awesome, one of the key titles in this generation, and way better than the sequels imho, 2 was ok, 3 is a disgrace, i had to push myself real hard to finish it...i need to pick the new one though, looks better, and Baird is cool

I agree completely with your assessment of the game OP. Gears of War was the very first game I bought/played on 360 and it stayed in my system for over a year. By far still the best multiplayer in the series. My friends and I (group of 6 of us) hosted lobbies and just played for hours every single night for well over a year.

Fantastic game. The sequels were disappointments in comparison, even if they were good games in their own right.

Yeah amazing game. It was a genuine system seller too. Great marketing campaign. Mad World is still the best ad for a game ever.

The multi in 3 js better, but the single player is the best in the series.
