Gears of War Ultimate Edition coming to PC

I run Linux.

I'm just being a dick since GFWL was such a disaster the first time. We still have games that we have zero access to at this point.

GFWL had its problems but it's death is not all on Microsoft.

Origin is a fine client but most PC gamers had, and still have the stance of "Titanfall on Steam or GTFO" or wouldn't play ME3 because it wasn't on Steam (luckily for them though since the SP was utter trash).

It wasn't until Valve tried to implement paid mods (a fucking optional feature) that the internet lost it's shit and decided "hey, maybe we shouldn't let Valve monopolize the PC market"

but then they said "jk, late april fools" and now people want them to monopolize it again. so maybe those games would have access if people didn't beg for a Valve monopoly.

Battlefield and Sims games do fine on Origin. Titanfall was a lackluster PC title with always-online, and no server browser. That makes a game DoA for PC.

GFWL's failure was entirely on Microsoft.

It's great that Killer Instinct and Gears 1 are coming to PC. I'll play both.

But this is not going to change anyone's mind about Microsoft Studios support for PC.

You get the head of Xbox up, he apologizes for not showing support in the past, and then his announcements are "Some games are made for TV, not PC, not everything is right for mouse and keyboard... we don't dictate where people should release stuff"... PC Gamers by and large play using controllers today--or at least have controllers--and many of them play on televisions. There's no design reason why any console game can't be on PC... And then "I don't want to make promises I can't keep"... and then an updated version of a ten year old game that people already bought on PC, that wasn't supported (and ultimately was abandoned and is no longer for sale), from a franchise that then left PC.

What people are expecting is something resembling publisher-wide software support parity between Xbox and Windows for Microsoft Studios games. Maybe that means some games come later, maybe it means not everything comes, maybe it means there's some exclusive stuff. No one is a stickler for every little thing being exactly the same. But in general, they mean that a Microsoft Games fan is no worse off owning a PC than owning an Xbox. No one from Microsoft Studios can say this with a straight face.

Again, not that there's something wrong with Gigantic, Fable Legends, Killer Instinct, or Gears 1. I'm sure they're all great.

.

Lip service by Microsoft. Yes, KI, Fable and GoW are nice. DirectX 12 is awesome.

But Microsoft is doing just enough on the PC platform that they can't be viewed as ignoring it.

I get it...they don't want people to have even the smallest reason to not get an XBox.

OK Microsoft.

That's good, hope it means they eventually remaster the other ones. Still, I think it would've been much more sensible if the "Ultimate Edition" had all the games, or at least the main 3.

It's not.
Well, it's based on the 360 version of Anniversary which was NOT based on the original Xbox version.

so they will just do "remaster" for Win10 instead stripping the old version off GfWL :-/ pathetic....
I see what you're implying there but they ARE actually re-doing all of the assets for the game. This isn't just the original Gears. It's getting the full Anniversary treatment. New lighting, new models, new textures, new effects, etc etc etc. It's not the same game.

For once, just for one time, I hope someone was looking at the juice.

The game feels great. I'm playing a role, but just seeing people handle these shotties and sniper rifles makes me feel inadequate.

Pretty sure this game was supposed to be a collection before MCC so I'd bet on it
Heh, I've wondering about that as well.

That said, since they are taking the anniversary approach here, I'm not sure it would have been feasible to do all three games in that style.

Halo 1 and 2 needed that work since they were made for the original Xbox and looked super dated. Gears exists within one generation. Gears 1 is the least impressive but still a nice looking game. Re-doing Gears 1 while leaving 2 and 3 alone would be a bit odd, I think.

The million dollar question and the difference between Microsoft seriously supporting PC gaming or just trying to push adoption of windows 10 with some token games before they spurn it as you would spurn a rabid dog.
This idea that you aren't supporting PC gaming if you don't release something on Steam is pretty stupid.

Nice. I've wanted to try Gears 1 on PC for a while but it was almost impossible to find and it had GFWL.

Hooefully they bring 2 & 3 if/when they remaster them this time.

Why wouldn't people adopt W10 if it's a free upgrade?

Because they are using apple products, some sort of tablet or simply will not bother.

Microsoft need as many people as possible to switch to W10 because there is obviously going to be a big push for their store this time around. It won't work of course, which is why these games need to be on different content delivery systems if Microsoft are serious about gaming.

Monopolies tend to have that effect.

MS doesn't have an obligation to support Apple products. They are focused on Windows and if that's where they want to keep Gears, you either upgrade to Windows or you miss out.

You little fucking beauty. What marvellous news to wake up to. Easily one of the best games of last generation.

To each his own. I didn't think any of the sequels lived up to the first game.

I hated the multi in 2 and 3, the sp is also boring in 2, couldn't even finish 3, bored me to tears. There really is no loss here, gears 1 campaign is the best and has the best multi. Definitely in for this on PC. I logged in 500+ hours of gears 1 online on 360. It's so good.

You missed the point. They want users to switch to windows.

You clearly don't understand PC gaming or must be very new to it. Do some research into Microsoft's past efforts and you might get a grasp of what is at stake here.

They have actually been putting their games on steam lately, the service of choice for the majority of PC gamers. If they choose to ignore it in favour of Windows 10 store, it is clear they are not supporting PC gaming at all, they are supporting Windows 10 store PC gaming.

It is a pretty obvious difference and that would be a deliberate choice.

"Microsoft needs to bring its games to PC to show support"

MS bring games to the PC.

"WTF are MS doing? They aren't supporting Steam... Ahum PC that way. Fuck you MS".

I really don't understand some of you folks.

I came into this thread thinking ultimate edition meant it was all three games - the reality has just set in - disappointed.

No, its not an obvious difference. A company is allowed to have their own delivery service. Wanting to make money is part and parcel of business and I cant blame anybody who wants to avoid the major cut that Valve demands from publishers.

this e3 keeps delivering imo

I was truly hoping for something Halo-related on PC, but I just knew we would end up getting the GoW1 anniversary. Still good though.

Microsoft have had their own delivery service, several times before in case you didn't know. You should probably look up how those services ended and how much Microsoft continued to support PC gaming as they failed.

There is a history lesson to be had. It is a long history.

The point that Microsoft are allowed to do what they want is completely irrelevant. They have a stated purpose, which is to support PC gaming properly. This is easy to do with the games they have and the outcome is fully in their control.

You missed the point. They want users to switch to windows.

And? If you're serious about PC gaming, why wouldn't you use Windows or have a Windows partition so you can play all the latest releases?

This just smacks of you desperately seeking to find a negative with this announcement. Frankly, it's a little ridiculous.

MS are finally stepping (somewhat) in supporting PC and yet there's still people complaining...
