Genres that are dead or dying

Stealth games are NOT dying, we just dont need the genre anymore. Look at DEUS EX:HR, Fallout 3 +, TES series, Assasin's Creed 1+, Far Cry1+ -- all of those games have stealth elements already as a CHOICE for the player.

Stealth is better when you can blow it and keep playing when the shit hits the fan. Developers realized this along time ago. Thief should not have even been created this gen. What a waste of time. Dishonored is a better game because stealth isn't required, but rather a another tool for the player.

HELL, LOOK AT THE NEW MGSV! You dont even need stealth, you can make a lot of noise and still complete the mission. The game is better for it.

Dont worry guys.

On another note, the word "RPG" has lost all meaning as well and has been adsorbed into other genres (almost all except racing and sports)...which is also funny.

Non-realistic sports titles. Before it was fine to make your sports games as ridiculous as possible, best examples being Midway's output and the early 3D wrestling games which existed to be as insane as possible.

Now it's all about how realistic and close to the actual sport you can get, there's nothing fun about trying to emulate real life in a sports game, just give me something fast paced and off the wall. At the very least we've been blessed with sports games riddled with glitches that make for some unintentionally funny moments.

They're not particularly new, but if you're a fan of the stealth genre and haven't played Siren 1 & 2 (PS2), then you're missing out. Best games in the genre IMO, but they frequently get overlooked because they're also horror games.

First person dungeon crawlers, luckily there are still handheld releases.

There are tons of first person dungeon crawlers being released and localized. There's a big difference between niche and dying. If you want dying(at least in the west), just look at mech games. All we've got is a couple F2P games, one of which sells clan mechs for hundreds of dollars a pop and MAV. And looking forward all we've got is a battletech turn-based strat game(which is the biggest news in years for the genre) and maybe another armored core game from From whenever they decide to give souls a rest.

Personally I feel like it's the RTS genre, and I'm glad others agree. Sure, it's not DEAD, but in my opinion it's certainly dying. A number of people felt that way when they did the Legacy of the Void Gamescom stream since no one was scrambling to ask questions. Everyone had questions for everything else they were presenting though.

Beat em ups like Final Fight, Streets of Rage 2.

On second thought - The Zombie beat em up that's part of 3DS streetpass games is keeping it alive.

And the 3DS got a 3D remake of SoR2.

Skateboarding games. You've got little things like Olli Olli, and then you've got the upcoming Pro Skater 5, but I don't exactly see that reviving the genre.

This thread always goes the same way. PC gamers go deep for some obscure games list and they "disprove" they aren't dying. Sorry I ain't using my PC for anything but work.

So if it's not thriving inside of your narrow bubble of what platforms you want to use, it doesn't count?

PC is where many niches can thrive and sustain themselves without needing mainstream exposure because they can easily reach out to more discerning consumers. That's anything but dead. That's a healthy, varied market.

Arcade racing is almost non existent these days which fucking sucks.

Even worse though is the lack of track based racers. Open world racing games are a fucking plague on the genre.

Nonrealistic sports titles is an obvious answer, but even realistic sports titles are shrinking, especially college sports and tennis.

3D Platformers
Tycoon/Simulation (Europa Universalis, Tropico, Zoo Tycoon, Rollercoaster Tycoon)
Extreme Sports (SSX, Tony Hawk, Matt Hoffman)
Arcade Racers (Burnout, Ridge Racer, Outrun)
SRPG (FFT, Luminous Arc, Disgaea)
Puzzle (Tetris, Puyo Puyo)
Hack N Slash (Devil May Cry, Ninja Gaiden)
Party games (Mario Party, Crash Bash)
Rhythm Games

These are almost all genres which have fairly notable releases within the next year or 2 coming out. Do people not know what dying means?

That's the one I was going to mention. The tournament 1-on-1 fighting games killed the scrolling beat 'em up both on consoles and in the arcades where they were often spawned.

I thought that The Warriors game ages ago might bring it back but it didn't, I suppose modern stuff with technical combat like Devil May Cry etc are the successor now. There's also Mother Russia Bleeds upcoming in the indie space.

Really not sure how SRPGs are dying, particularly since you mention portable ones.

Mercenaries Saga 2 and Lost Dimension just came out on 3DS and Vita respectively, and we had Codename Steam in March and Natural Doctrine last year too. There's also Liege upcoming, and Project Phoenix is due next year, although we haven't heard anything about it for ages. Plus Fire Emblem: Fates, the 3DS version of Devil Survivor 2, Rainbow Skies and the Vita version of The Banner Saga. I think there's a new Luminous Arc game coming up too.

Plus Regalia:

Linear tripple A games in general, most big titles now are open world with only a handful of crafted linear titles like uncharted, the order, gears, and halo thrown in : /, I'm honestly sick of open world games, very excited for meta gear however.

Disgaea's far from dead, as well. It's getting pretty regular releases. You've also got Summon Night 5 being localized this year, the Devil survivor remakes released on 3ds, and a few other indies. If we're being more general with TRPGs, you can look at Shadowrun Returns, dragonfall, and the new one in development among many other games.

Ah, I'm not much of PC gamer so thanks for that :-) We could also add Banner Saga 2, right? That's quite a list really.

3D Fighting Games

VF is dead
SC is on the verge of death
Tekken is recycing the same assets over and over causing it to sell worse and worse with every iteration

DOA is the only game which is staying healthy only with otaku's dumping 100's of dollars on bare-naked attires on the girls.

Yeah it's weird to see this happening.

Hope we get a vf6 at some point.

Arcade racers and arcade sports are the ones I miss most. Also doom style shooters, thank heavens for shadow warrior at least. Shmups too, all the ones coming out now are animu moe bullet hells. The last decent ones have been Jamestown and VelocityX. And run and gun platformers like metal slug or contra.

Lightgun

The only reason there are still new arcade titles on occasion is that the genre is typically very cheap to make

The wii was actually the biggest boon the genre had in years, not only being able to support rereleases of older titles to get more return on them, but having a greater libary of original ones than any other console in history unless I am greatly mistaken

I suppose you've got stuff like Gunslugs and Mercenary Kings, but I do miss the beautiful pixel art of Contra IV and Metal Slug 7 on DS. Metal Slug 3 on Vita is pretty cool though. Funny how those two just remain the kings of the genre.

I'd love to see Hard Corps Uprising re-released on PS4/PSV.

Light gun games were mentioned.

If you're talking Star Fox...aside from SF0, the last one that I can think of is 2011 Yars Revenge. This is one genre that'll definitely require indies to survive.

Bullet hell killed SHMUPS, I know many people like them, but personally I think they ruined things...
Cave catered to an ever shrinking fanbase that ended up killing them and the shmup genre along the way.

Not a single manic shooter is in my top 20 shmups (save maybe for rsg)

I don't know. There are quite a few stealth/pseudo-stealth games coming out.

MGS
New Ghost Recon
Dishonered 2
Deus Ex
Hitman

Even though Blacklist didn't sell as much as Conviction, I really doubt Ubisoft is done with Splinter Cell. The stealth genre has always been pretty niche to begin with.
Plus Invisible Inc and Marvellous Miss Take and Styx and Tangiers and Mike Bithell's Volume and the Tenchu-inspired Twin Souls

Does Crimson Dragon count? I haven't played the game, but if it's anything like Panzer Dragoon, it probably belongs to the rail shooter genre.

EDIT: Beaten

Which is why none of them are stealth games. Stealth games are games that are about sneaking. Not sneaking is risky, and often gets you punished.

What a lovely opinion. I like action games that support optional sneaking. I also like stealth games. Saying that the genre is obsolete is like going up to a shooter fan and being like, "Hey, it's cool that you like shooting, but you know, there are games where you can talk your way past enemies, so we don't need the shooter genre anymore."

Exactly.

What makes stealth fun is ghosting a level, being able to out-maneuver and out-think enemies without the safety net of heavy firepower to fall back. It's the anti-thesis of your typical game; the satisfaction comes from avoiding conflict for as long as possible
