Genuine question: What is white culture?

I know I'm likely not going to get the answer from, uh... "white culture worries" or better known as the alt-right. Since it's a term I've seen bandied about, specifically on JonTrons Twitter and various other folk I thought about it and realized I genuinely don't know what white culture would even be. A lot of people can point to any given PoC and give you an approximation of their culture--even if it's a racist one. People know what "Black music" is or what an "Asian family" might be like when you bring it up.

But what do people mean when they say white culture? The obvious answer is imperialism, oppression, things like that. But above all else I think white culture is about appropriation, and maybe that's where my confusion stems from. So, gaf, I ask you: What is white culture to you?

Everything that's not asian culture, black culture, latin culture or first nations culture. Basically in the west it's the default culture.

Taylor Swift and mayonnaise.

It's hard to notice white culture, because it's so dominant.

Anything that doesn't belong to another culture, is probably white culture.

White culture is culture that has the privilege to not be thought of as white culture.

Yup, it's the predominant culture in most of the west.

So any change in the predominant culture feels like an attack for the groups that want to defend "white culture".

There's no such thing as white culture. There's western culture based on greco-roman culture and christianity with its good aspects and its not so good aspects.

Now if you're talking about american Wasp culture then that's another thing.

Isn't this seen as problematic, though? That white is default and everything else is some sort of "other"?

Depends what country you are from I guess.

White culture to a Russian would be different to that of a American for example.

Pretty much this. I saw a thing on reddit a while back where someone was explaining why people who bitch about not being able to celebrate "white pride" are completely out of touch and I thought it was neat. Not 1:1 with OP's question, but the idea is pretty close.

white isn't a culture

Kennedys probably don't go to square dances

If there is white culture it is maybe related to a particular european heritage or it is a regional derivative.

Of course. I'm not saying it should be that way, just offering an explanation why it seems like there's no specific white culture.

Of course it's a problem. Racism is in the DNA of the US. Almost every statistic you can track regarding outcomes of different demographics points to this.

Helming our (US) government, or others

It isnt about shepherd's pie and mac and cheese with cut up hotdogs, but holding onto the only real positions of power in this modern world. The growing browning of our culture threatens these institutions from staying Lilly white.

The whole terminology of "black culture" is kind of disingenuous to begin with, as it alludes to some kind of monolithic ethnical culture which is simply not the case. Is black culture in the US the same as it is in Rwanda? Is it the same in Rwanda as it is in South Africa? Hell, is it even the same in New Orleans as it is in Los Angeles?

The same line of thought can be applied to the idea of "white culture" or "asian culture" or "middle eastern culture" or whatever.

I grew up in a very white area in Pennsylvania. There was an annual pigeon shoot (they release pigeons from cages and people shoot them from fairly close range as they fly away). There were of course protests every year and one guy on the side of the shoot wearing an orange camouflage hunting hat with a big wad of chewing tobacco said into a news camera, "I don't know what the problem is. It's a sport like NASCAR and pro wrestling. It's our culture."

So I guess it's shooting pigeons, stock car racing, and dramatized wrestling entertainment.

If you're talking about most individual regions or nations, there isn't really one "white culture" and can be easy to characterize or define. Italian culture is different than German culture which is different from French culture which is different from white US southern culture.

If you're talking about the ambiguous generic culture or lack of unique cultural offerings that has come to define places like the American Midwest or England, then it's way harder to nail it down exactly.

There isn't really 'white culture'. You have different cultures and different types of white people.

You can't really have that with black Americans because many don't know their origins, so 'black culture' is a catchall for native born black Americans.

They're the Megaman of culture. They'll defeat you, take your culture, and use it to defeat others. They also may use a dog to assist themselves in doing so.
