Geoff Keighley teasing VGX/A

As much as I enjoyed Joel McHale last year, it didn't suit the program. Then again, the program was completely dead and lifeless without him.

So yes, more Joel McHale, please.

If Hello Games' Murray is tweeting about something, I'd bet its an Indie title. You rarely see Indie developers talking about being excited for a release unless it's Indie.

Games not pertaining to the rule are widely acclaimed jumbo titles like TLOU.

He's a comedian making jokes in his style of humor. Geoff should have known that before asking him to cohost.

I personally thought that Joel was less of a comedian and more of a "comedian" with the way he acted.

I wonder what the chances are that things will be different this year. I remember hearing about how Geoff has been fighting for years to make something respectable but Spike wants something for their audience?

Why can't we get something like the Academy Awards? I don't like the hipster clothing/stage thing they go for with the unfunny jokes. I'd actually watch it if the show was more serious and less talk-show like.

I wouldn't even mind them dropping the whole interviewing and announcement stuff but instead have them run through the categories, inviting winners on stage etc (or play a video the e.g. dev prepared if they can't make it). You'd still have time to include interviews and announcements in a serious awards show though.

I sincerely hope they go back to the bombastic bullshit award show style they had prior to VGX. I mean yeah, VGX wasn't as cringe-worthy as the VGAs, but it was just boring. At least prior years were fun to laugh at.

Over the past 5 years there hasn't been a single Geoff Keighley tease that actually lived up to his hype. Is this the time we ban Geoff Keighley "teases" on NeoGaf?

No there were actually plenty of really good announcements in the past.

I hope there are good announcements this year not the cranky kong and pre-sequel type of stuff from last year.

Revengeance 2 please. :P

Revengeance 1 was a VGA announcement after all.

Because nobody would watch it. The VGAs are a glorified press conference. People watch to see new game trailers and announcements. Nobody cares about the actual awards. Not very many People would not tune in to see random unknown developers in black ties giving acceptance speeches. The music and movie/ tv industries can do this because they are built around stars. People that viewers want to see.

Well but is it too much to ask to get a more serious show? Less basement style stages and less retarded comedy videos (I remember the vid with the 2 actors doing the retarded teenager awards stuff where they said Zelda should get guns etc... horrible).

Probably. I just don't think the industry has that kind of weight with the mainstream. The perception by in large is still that games are for kids and man children. It's closer on the spectrum to comic books and pro wrestling than music or movies in that sense .

Like he said though, the ideal format of the show would just be a barrage of trailers and gameplay vids, and no bullshit regarding awards and all that other fluff. Since they have a slot to fill, that fluff will always be there.

Oh man, the Games N Wrestling connection would kick the ass of Rock N Wrestling.

Won't this years VGAs be about the same time as that 'Playstation Experience'? I wonder if Sony would rather save reveals for its own show instead of letting the VGAs have them...

Just no half-ass reveals like Uncharted 4. If you've got bombs to drop, drop 'em.

I don't want another "We're pleased to announce that we're doing another sequel to our incredibly popular game series."

The trailer at E3 would've been so much more effective without the BS at VGA/PS Launch.

OK. Maybe I'm exaggerating then. Last year was pretty bad though.

Game news wize, it was not that bad.

- new Witcher 3 trailer
- new Division [engine] trailer
- new Quantum Break trailer
- new Thief trailer
- announcement of No Man's Sky
- announcement of Telltale's Game Of Thrones & Tales from Borderlands projects
- announcement of Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition
- DKTF release date announcement
- nice interview with Tim Schafer about Broken Age [unveil of Elijah Wood voiceover]
- Reggie trolling everyone with vague announcements [and Metroid pin]

Show presentation on the other hand...

After last year's awkward, embarrassing train wreck of an awards show?

I don't get Geoff. The guy seems unbothered by every form of corporate humiliation.

This show celebrates gaming and the culture behind it. To mock it is to mock gaming itself. If you want gaming to be seen as a respected art form then you'll need to learn to appreciate efforts like this that help push gaming forward and out of the uncultured wastelands.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about gaming culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in comedy where you can become successful by being an asshole. If you screw someone over in gaming, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the gaming public, after hearing about this, is not going to want to watch the VGAs. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but the VGAs has alienated an entire market with this move.

VGA, publicly apologize and make the show as dull as possible or you can kiss your ratings goodbye.

While I appreciate your humor/meme, I think "serious" is the wrong word, and I think he meant "respectful". You can absolutely value something via humor, even poking fun at it, but last year's delivery, specifically by McHale just had a generally condescending tone, which wasn't helped by crap like that stupid Smosh video. Ironically, Trey Parker and Matt Stone's bits were the most respectful, and the show should be more focused on that style of humor.

I personally thought that Joel was less of a comedian and more of a "comedian" with the way he acted.

Seems people had a hard time differentiating between the neckbeard jokes that were being read off of the teleprompter (i.e. approved by the VGAs and likely, by the look on McHale's face when he delivered them, not written or even previewed by McHale) and the pure gold that was the look of disgust at the Tomb Raider DE announcement, amazement at No Man's Sky, and general Geoff ribbing once the teleprompter was discarded.

I find it very strange that people don't realize that all the shitty gamer jokes were provided and approved by the event. They were what they paid him to read. When he went rogue, he was actually treating the audience more respectfully than anyone else there. Oh no, he violated the sanctity of advertising at an awards show by asking how much money Elijah Wood was being paid to voice act an indie game. Oh no, he actually expressed opinions about the two hours of marketing materials the made up the majority of this awards show. The horror. How disrespectful!

I don't want another VGX like last year. And I wouldn't get my hopes up about any big reveals... last year had almost nothing outside of No Mans Sky which I'm not even interested in. Then again they probably need a way to announce another 3 Telltale games

You have no way of knowing what as written for him and what was not, and even the "off-script" stuff made him come across kind of like a dick. I realize some people liked that he was basically taking cheap shots at everything, because the show is generally kinda embarrassing, but it only makes the whole atmosphere even more negative/unpleasant IMO.
