Geometry Wars ninjas, I seek guidance

I've been playing a lot the last few days and finally cracked the 750K barrier, but I've hit the wall again and haven't done any better in the last 10+ plays. I have some specific questions...

Do you follow a particular pattern? When the shit gets heavy, usually I just make large clockwise circles, generally shooting in front of me. Have you found anything that works well? It seems like you need a pattern to follow, it gives you some structure instead of deciding where to go moment by moment.

Those... I dunno what you want to call 'em, I call 'em "metal bugs." Those tiny blue objects that pour out of all four corners en masse about every 200,000 points. I cannot seem to devise a strategy to get rid of them other than using a bomb. Pain in the ass.

The black holes. I can't make up my mind if they're good to keep around or should be wiped out ASAP. They help clear clutter off the screen, but I've been noticing most of my deaths have been coming from black holes pulling me a little off line, causing me to hit objects I otherwise thought I was going to avoid.

(I would have put this in the Geo Wars official thread, but there isn't one. Discussion has been scattered over several topics.)

are u talking about the crazy blue jumping jacks? you have to shoot foward and motor through their linkes as quick as possible then do it again on the next line of them until you have room to manoever around them and kill them all.. im at 880k myself, if i had more time id be over 1 million by now

I can't even reach 200k :(

Seems like every time I get close to my high score (~165k) the difficulty just gets insane all of a sudden.

Is that possible? They seem to come at you faster than your rate of fire. Are you just punching a hole through one of the lines then turning around and doing it again? That seemed to work once for me.

Kill the gravity bombs

don't think if you should kill it or not...remove yourself from conscious thought and let the healing power of your released energy cleanse all that appears on screen. Free your mind and quickly enter a state of thoughtless mastery and then you shall break any barrier you set for yourself

9 time out of 10 is it possible if u have the super 5 bullets gun... harder with the 3 bullets gun

Same here. I've gotten around 260k, but only by surviving up until that point. Once everything starts going nuts, that's where I pick up the rest of my points, but lose all my lives in the process. :P

I was stuck in the sub 250K groove for a long time, too. The more you play, the more you get used to how each enemy moves and where you need to be. The best tip is to always pay more attention to where you're going than what's around you. Practice trying to narrow your field of vision down as close to your ship as you can get it.

Anyone have tips for getting the Pacifism achievement? I didn't think it'd be that hard to just dodge everything for a minute, but damn that one minute feels like an eternity.... I try to make the blue things get stuck to each other so I only have to worry about one big blob instead of a bunch of them, but the green dudes chase after me and usually make me run into one of those purple spinny flower things...

ugh, those fucking red things that bulldoze at you!

It's always the red things, the blue things that shoot out when black holes explode, or the pink pieces that jettison out when you kill the pink squares. The red things REALLY piss me off. If I knew how to handle these I could literally get 100-500 million instead of 350k :(

For Pacifism - Also, you can knock out the first 2 spinny things with your shield that you start the game with (for like 5 second). It'll make things slightly easier.

Same here.

We suck.

:lol

For people stuck in the 200k range, I think I know your problem.

Stop shooting backwards and retreating. You have to shoot forwards and keep a clear path. If you retreat too often (sometimes it is necessary), the screen will fill and you'll be toast. It's hard to do mentally, but ignore what's chasing you in favor of hunting down enemies and keeping a clear forward path open.

My heart harbors nothing but deep hatred for the chaotic moving green boxes.

You gotta chase those buggers down aggressively. Corner them and do a sweeping fire motion and they can't dodge that.

On the flipside, I LOVE blasting the retarded white diamonds when they spawn from all four corners. That should be a whole game there. It's so relaxing compared to everything else.

I can make it up to 1,700,000 but i swear to god, those fucking red ships ALWAYS fuck it up for me. It does not help when they send them in waves of 4 or 5. Either they kill me, or drive me into another enemy. Fuckers

Same here. They're not even dangerous, they're just annoying as hell.

My problem with this game is that, even though I know I suck, I tend to get over-confident. I always tell myself, "Don't waste a bomb here, you can get out of this yourself." Of course, I should've used a bomb. Half the time when I get a game over, I have all of my bombs remaining because I'm too cautious in when I should be using them.

I usually don't play the game for more than two or three sessions in a row. I can pretty much tell right away if I'm going to suck or not, and if I should even bother to continue playing that day. Some days I've got it, other days I don't - and trying to force it makes me play even worse. Works the same way for other reaction/instinct-type games. Not playing Amplitude for two months was the only way I beat Robot Rockerz on Insane. :D

Geo Wars is so fucking awesome

Why cant they release this shit on PC or something!!!!!111111111111

Seriously. I played Xbox 360 at my friend house and this is the the only game I like. I'm not spending $400 bucks to play an Atari game with particle effects.

My noob ass hates the Pink ones that turn into tiny replicas after you shoot them. I think my highest score so far has been around 80k (I KNOW, I KNOW) and I always seem to get ganked by those little bastards.

Yea, I mean, cmon, it's just dying for a PC port - especially as people would probably buy it, with games like kenta cho's being so popular.

Well, if you're serious, then it must be a worthy comment for this thread.

I find the less I think about it, the better I play. When my head is filled with strategies and goals, I play like crap. But if I zone out and just play, everything falls into place. The best advice is to never shoot in a straight line or retreat unless absolutely necessary.

It sorta just clicked and I went from a highscore of 230k to a high score of 450k,
I did not sleep well last night, so I think I could do better still.

here's my ninja tip... when attacking your way through a mob to clear a path, don't shoot straight. shoot at multiple angles.

for the red mother fuckers. when you hear the funky rumbling noise they make, be aware of your position on the screen and get ready to dodge it. once dodged, turn around and kill it.

wow. another useless reply in response to the subject title.

I hated those fuckers for awhile, now I figured out a couple of strategies against them

1. sweep all the way across the screen shooting in a straight line. They dodge all the way til they get to the boundary, then they're toast

2. shoot them when they get VERY close to your guy. They won't have time to dodge.

3. jerk the thumbstick back and forth fast in about a 45 degree motion while firing at them. This creates an arc of shots that are wide enough that they can't escape to the sides, and close enough together that they can't dodge and weave them.

Can someone post the link to that 2million point video again? I want to see that again. Before I watched it before owning the game and it actually looked pretty easy :lol

Here's two videos:

Striker's 2.1 mill video

TheDog's 2.9 mill video

The 2.9 vid has better footage of how to get through the jacks spawns. Basically, you try to draw out as much of the spawn as possible, then move to an edge, and blast through the last part, where it's thinnest. Do not just try to go straight through, as you'll die half the time that way.

You want to destroy the gravity wells ASAP. If you do leave them alive to suck in enemies, stay well away from them (like 3.5 ships distance away) so you don't get pulled by their gravity, because that will kill you a lot.

If you think things are bad now, the game hits a new level of difficulty at 1 million (actually 900,000) and 2 million it looks like.

Ive been stuck on 660 thousand and something for over a week,I must get over this wall! :(

I watched that video and doubled my score from like 260K to 480K in ten minutes! Amazing.

This is absolutely key.

This game pisses me off.... I must suck because i've been trying to get pasificism for about an hour now. I always get to the point where the bell rings (i figure I have about 10 seconds left), and one of the light green diamonds who's been following me the whole time catches up to me. Talk about frustrating.

If the bell rings, you may have gotten it. Are you letting the game end (i.e., losing all your men)? The achievement doesn't unlock till the game is over for some reason.

didn't want to make a new thread for this

but i made a song for geometry wars :) merry christmas everyone

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=262683

click music on the right and it's the top song called "Geometric Death"

Enjoy :D

(sorry, i would normally host this on my server but it's being REALLY LAME RIGHT NOW :< )

you need to register to download (but you can still listen to it), but if someone wants to host it i will <3 you

Don't move in straight lines. I got it first try. Try snaking around more and weaving in between all the new enemies that pop up.

my hands actually hurt from playing this game so much. I got my xbox 2 days ago and I've been playing non-stop. I'm up to 890k.

One of my complaints though, is if your on the boundary and it does one of those patterns where the enemy surrounds you, an enemy spawns right where your guy is. I hate that.

Holy shit I got in the zone...I have been stuck at 660,00 for a week and just now I was so locked in I passed a mill with a score of 1,101,195...god I feel good but my eyes are sore and my hand is broken.

Jumped up on the leaderboards all the way to 357.

fuck, i just got 923k but I wasn't logged online so it doesn't count for the online scoreboards :(

I was planning on "just practicing" :(

Wow, I saw the video Yesterday. It was his/her old score of xTHEDOGGx. All the enemies everywhere.
He/she is now at number 2 of Leaderboard:
4,191.815.
I still haven't break the barrier of 300k yet:
262.100
edit: 265.275 (2 unused boms :)
edit 2: 344,370 (Finally broke the 300k barrier )
This game is rock hard.

Merry X-Mas to everyone on this board community.

Very cool! I like it. I'm gonna download it and use it as background music for Geo Wars. Does the 360 mp3 player have a repeat function? I forget. I hope so.

I'm gonna try to make a Geometry Wars game scene out of snow in my backyard after the first big snowfall this year.

thanks ! custom soundtrack music autorepeats when you select just 1 song... there'd be like 1 second gap inbetween the end and begnining though
