Get $200 trade-in credit for any PS3 system at Gamestop

I have a slim in the box, never used. I won it at a competition, but my roommate has one already hooked up so I haven't bothered to use mine. I'd trade it in, but honestly what am I going to use the credit for at gamestop? :(

If you just want to backup your unprotected saves, you can save yourself a lot of *hassle by just sticking in a mem/usb stick and copying them one by one. If you want a full backup minus copy protected saves, you'll need to use the Backup Utility. If you want a complete transfer you'll need to use the Transfer Utility.

*I say hassle because people have had issues with both the Backup & Transfer Utility because some file is being a stubborn dick. Copying them to a mem stick should sidestep that issue and you should have no problems restoring them back.

For PSN, you need to login and go to PSN -> Account Management -> System Activation -> Game / Video -> Deactivate. Video is separate from Game and you'll need to deactivate it if you've ever downloaded anything from the Video Store. Then wipe the harddrive if you want to delete your files and then create a new user XMB account and delete your original one (the "Restore PS3 System" option under System Settings does the both things for you iirc).
Thanks man. Looks like I'll be doing this as much as I don't want to. (hugs launch 60gb) :X

So what is needed? The system, controller, power cable...can I give them an HDMI? Do I need to give the a USB for the controller?
give them the old composite cable. save your hdmi. :lol

and i hate gamestop so i think i'm going to try my luck at trading without my controller, ill bring it in the car just in case. :P A free controlller would make this deal sweeter.

Anyone wondering how well they'll check out you're ps3 that's basically on it's last legs.. If it turns on and plays a game you're good to go!
How many minutes did the whole process take? All they need is system, controller, composite cable and power cord right? When does this deal end?

I traded in my gamecube with a disc read error problem that always ran fine for the first 5-10 minutes. They played it for about 30 seconds and said it was fine. They were confused as to why I used the credit towards the purchase of another gamecube. I said my girlfriend wanted a different color.

Fuckers deserved it after the shit they pulled on me at that store over the years.

haha, trading in a broken system, and getting away with it, and then using the credit to buy a working system, that is the exact same console, is pretty ballsy :lol

Why exactly is this deal going on? Are people in a rush to sell their PS3's? There is no new PS3 hardware coming out...

Not to threadcrap, but it seems like not a great deal to me.
$200 store credit for a working PS3 ? That's a good deal ?

I guess if you really want to 'upgrade' to a slim.

For whomever posted on the 1st page about if the 65/65nm final edition fat is more reliable, anecdotally, I don't see much difference in reliability across the fat models. Although I could be biased since my 60gb 90/90nm still runs like a top. It's hands down more reliable than either my launch PS1 or 6 month post launch PS2. (Both of which were flaky within 2 years of purchase) 2 of my other friends had 40gb fats die on them.

So what are the chances of my barely-used 80gb w/bc (mgs4 bundle) netting me any more than $200 on craigslist/ebay/buy-sell-trade-thread? I don't even know which firmware update it's on, but I know it was prior to the whole linux removal.

Man if demon's souls didn't have a locked save I would probably do this. I just can't get rid of 100 hours of gameplay.

I'm sure you can check ebay yourself...Anyways as far as craigslist goes I would say try 250 for the hell of it.

Hmm. I have one of the newer 80 gb phats. Not sure if there's much of a reason to move to slim other than design. ?

Just came back. Traded in my launch 60gb. Got a new 21XX model slim (45mm rsx). And they took my sixaxis for a dual shock 3, not a bad deal.

PS2, you had a GREAT run. I'll miss you. :lol

Because my ps3 was starting to run hotter and louder. It could melt the t-1000 no problem. :x

The funny thing is that I was talking with my girlfriend about how it wasn't playing every BR I got from Netflix, was freezing and such. This was the exact thing my PS3 did before it stopped reading BR's and I had to send it to Sony for $149.99. About 20 minutes later I'm saying "holy shit, GS is giving $200 for a trade in!" after reading it here and started transferring my saves.

For some it might be paranoia ... for me I've already been burned by the laser in the 80Gb Motorstorm pack and I'll take the $100 hit with the $40 plan any day to have 2 years of a warranty and a quieter system with a bigger HDD (plus it came with another DS3 so I got rid of my SIXAXIS!!)

Wow... if people are really going to get rid of backwards compatible 60GB launch systems on this deal, I think I'd gladly cross ship you my 40GB model so you can trade that in instead while I end up with a fully functional PS3.

No "Gamestop is evil" posts? No ranting and raving?

Hypocrites, the lot of ya.

They have good deals sometimes but still suck as a company. Like an old relationship, this is just a booty call.

So you can trade in an old PS3 for a new Wii? That doesn't sound like too much of a ripoff. good job Gamestop

I'm seriously thinking about doing this. The only PS3 games I'm interested in are Agent, BG&E2, Last Guardian, and probably the new Bourne game if the game ever gets released.

As for Wii, I want to play SMG2, NSMBW, buy MP3 again (never finished the game when I had a Wii a long time ago) , and I'd be waiting for DKCR, Kirby, and Zelda.

I have quite a few BR movies, but I can always buy a cheap BR player.

Hmmm. Decisions decisions.

If you can afford a cheap Blu-Ray player why can't you afford a cheap wii?

I'm trying to figure out if I should sell my launch 60 gig I have a slim already, I mean i could just get a ps2 if i want to play ps2 games. which isn't really that often(more like never) It caught the ylod earlier this year and i got it fixed. Plus i really want that 360 slim, chance of me using the 60 gig is really unlikely.

Man it's crazy, my PS3 was getting hot and loud just backing up my saves 15 mins after turning it on. This slim hasnt made a sound playing 15 mins of RDR. Love it. :lol I hear my quiet laptop over my ps3!

If you have a ps3 slim already, get the 360 slim.

The other day I was reconnecting everything in my entertainment center and the PS3 wasn't working. I eventually figured out that it was actually the HDMI cable, not the PS3, but as I was troubleshooting it, I was kind of excited at the prospect of being able to get a new Slim, but it was for the stupidest reasons. It looks nicer of course, less power, etc. all good stuff. But I think the biggest reason was because the slims can output the HD codecs so that when you're watching a blu-ray, my reciever would actually show DolbyHD or whatever. Of course as it currently is I'm still getting all the HD codecs, it's just the PS3 is processing it instead of my reciever, so there would be absolutely no difference to how things sound, just that a light would turn on on my reciever.

But anyway, turns out my 60gb is doing just fine, and since it is such a superior system to the slim in every other way, I think I'm going to keep it until it dies.

What is the heat output like from the PS3 slim? My 60GB can easily heat up my room to the point where I'm actually sweating, even during the winter. If a slim is going to do something similar I'd rather just stick with my 60GB.

Those of you who traded in a fat PS3 for a slim, does it run cooler than your old PS3?

I'd really like to keep my 60GB, but it's already shut off on me once last year and I wasn't able to turn it back on for about 5 minutes... I'm surprised it hasn't died yet, to be honest. I'll be spending at least $150 extra for a slim and PS2 slim, though I really don't want to buy a used PS2.

At the beginning of the slims life yes it does run cooler but lately (bought at christmas) my sisters slim has become hot to touch unlike my year old 80gb.

And it also has become quite loud.

Today is the first day in a long time my room didn't get so hot I couldn't sleep in it. Today is the first day in a long time I didnt have to turn my volume higher to hear the audio of a game. And Today is the first day in a long time I have extra room on my desk.

I really didnt care about a slim before (you can even find my first post in this thread in denial about giving my 60gb PS3 fat away). Never even had a PS2 slim. But I'm glad I upgraded today. This deal was a very good one, and I feel better safe than sorry.

I am so fucking pissed. I planned to go to gamestop and rip these fuckers off. Turned on my PS3 for the first time since February and the fucker YLOD'd again. I have the bar exam in about two weeks. Don't have the 5-6hrs to spend gilksying the thing again at this point in time. Fuck gamestop and fuck sony.

The newest slims run very cool. My 60gb just ylod'd out of the blue, i'd trade her in if she's already shut off once... You can get a used ps2 for dirt cheap, and you'll have peace of mind when you're playing ps2 games as you'll only be playing it on a $50 console, and won't be shortening your ps3's life or risk it overheating, burning out the laser etc

do they check if it is backwards compatible? my PS3 is a launch 60 gb Japanese model and I'm just curious if they might. Since it only plays Japanese PS2 games
maybe I should try switching out the hard drive to 40 gb , idk
