I want to get my cousin a nice present for getting his first job... he only has a gaming laptop says he likes open world RPG type games and I want to spend around $350

So is a $300 Switch and BotW better than a cheaper $250 PS4 with 2 games (Persona 5 and Horizon)?

21 years old, not a huge console gamer and last had a PS1 as a kid I believe.

Get him a ps4 . It has a great backlog and a promising line up for the future . He can get a switch couple of years down the line .

As great as Zelda, and the Switch for that matter are, you can't really beat the value of a PS4 right now, some really incredible games available for it.

I agree with PS4 being the better value (larger library + Blu Ray player), but if you think your cousin would enjoy a portable open world game, a Switch might be worth it instead.
I feel like Zelda is the better fit for a lapsed gamer. Because games like Horizon might feel overwhelming and complex with all the menus and stuff. While Zelda is very accessible and easy to understand.

Also a good point. If he's not much of a console gamer, Mario Kart would be a good purchase later on too next month.

I mean at the end of the day there are a lot more exclusives to offer on the PS4. Switch will only have Zelda even if it is an amazing game you basically give him something he will likely only use for a single game until the holidays.

Get him the PS4.

Lots of games that he can enjoy right now and definitely will be more in the future at the pace there going.

A big reason why people buy Nintendo consoles in the first place is for there first title games which I would assume your cousin has no attachment to since he grew up with a PS1.

If he likes open world RPGs then he'll get a lot more mileage out of the PS4. Does he like more linear story-driven games, though? Otherwise, not sure if getting him P5 is a good idea.

Horizon and PS4, Who wants a tablet with no library?

I think I might go with PS4 + Horizon + 12 year sub to PS+ and drop P5... that way he can try other games too?

PS4 gets him more options, so I'd probably recommend that. Switch is better utilized as a secondary console, and will have a healthier library down the road.

Hyped for P5 myself

A PS4 might be the better choice. Larger library, third party support (you know what I mean) and probably cheaper (depending on normal or pro and bundles etc, I dunno).

Though a Switch would be cool because you could take it into work and play it during breaks or lunch.

PS4 seems like an easy choice depending on how old his gaming laptop is and whether or not it can reliably run something like the Witcher 3 or Dragon Age Inquisition.

PS4 for now. Switch will be an incredible system but PS4 is becoming a grown man this year and its library seriously getting incredible. I dont have enough money or time to get all the games I want. I dont remember this happening to me last gen. Plus then Switch will grow and improve in the meantime.

Value-wise i'd say PS4, but since he sounds lapsed, situation-wise i'd say Switch and Zelda.

Though if they're cool with all the complexity and stuff, just flip a coin, really.

PS4 is the better choice now imo

Switch maybe the one to pick by next year, but the slim PS4 is probably the best value in gaming hardware right now. Tons of exclusives and all the third party games.

Can't go wrong with any of those games but it's hard to give the Switch, as it's library is now, a recomendation over the PS4's 3 year head start.

Also if you do get a PS4 get him Bloodborne too.

dont be swept up by the launch hype,
a better time to buy the switch would be a 'new' revision and if youre really impatient ,
get one in the holiday season if they release mario and xenoblade on time.
youll find better bundles, its gonna gather dust till then anyway once youre done with zelda

Mark me down in the PS4 camp. It has an excellent back catalog and 2017 alone has been fantastic for the system. Gravity Rush 2, Yakuza 0, Nioh, NieR Automata, and now Persona 5.
